Congrats to you and your girls!! Those are fine elk!!! Actually the top pic is my wife and the little turd in the grey beanie is my son. They keep the freezer FULL most years. Congrats to yours also, looks like you'd have had to take her apart right there and start packing...

Thanks guys. To the next question then since you think the 260 is just fine for elk. What about range? Should I limit myself to using the 260 out to let's say 300 yards? Or would you push it further?
Thanks in advance. LOL My daughter smacked the cow in the second pic at 357, in behind the shoulder, out in front of the opposite shoulder. 140 partition @ 2600 MV. It had plenty of gas left and I'd not suggest it was a marginal shot or lacking for energy. She died where she stood... All the others were less than 80 yards so they work up close too. A big mature bull will have more muscle mass and bigger bones, and a stronger will to live. Their vitals, however, are the weak link and are no tougher than a cow. Shoot 'em there and they die.

Simple ain't it? Can't figure whey it's lost on some... But to be fair, you CAN make a schitty shot on a cow, and she MIGHT lay up. A bull, not so much. That's where that will to live enters the equation.

A friend of mine took his daughter on her first cow hunt armed with a 30-30 bolt action and lever-revolution ammo. Some butthead from a neighboring camp asked her what she was hunting with and gave her a condescending load of crap about how that wasn't enough gun for elk, blah blah blah. My friend had to undo some damage to her confidence. In the end her only shot was a head-on and she elected not to take it, which was the right decision at the time. She scored on a later hunt. 30-30 is plenty, 260 certainly is.

Reading through one of the many rags i get..
Interesting comment by a well known...
"Were Elk killed by the .300 savage over the last 90 years just unlucky? Bt this measure, elk taken with the 30-40 Krag and the .303 British also drew short straws-- to say nothing of those felled by the 30-30 and .32 special, the 44-40 and early .45-70 loads Oddly enough, a Krag killed John Plute's 1899 Colorado Bull, which topped the record books for nearly a century."
The Elk don't know the difference when a bullet is placed in the vitals.
The .260 will work wonderfully well if driven accurately.

Hey guys, I'm going to be hunting elk this upcoming season for the first time and I was wondering if my 260 would be a decent back-up rifle if my 338 Federal took a dirt nap. I reload and would be using a good bonded bullet.
Just trying to get away from buying another rifle... even though I want one. LOL
Thanks The Swedes have been bumping off Moose for years with the 6.5x55, I can't see any reason you couldn't use a .260 to lay an elk low. Well, if you can't, it isn't a fault of the cartridge.

The .260 Rem is a kids/girls rifle and shouldn't even be considered for bull elk hunting. That is magnum territory!!!

What cracks me up is the stuff I hear and read regarding the right caliber for elk hunting, that is why I doubted the 260 in the first place.
Pretty much all the magazines and books I've read try to push the magnums for elk and make normal people feel under-gunned (like I did).
I felt like I had to carry a 300 Win Mag/ WSM or bigger to successfully harvest one until I started reading posts/ threads on here.
For some reason I no longer feel under-gunned anymore. LOL
Thanks for the info guys.

Kill at all cost hunters are why there are dumbasses that still use rifles to kill elk I've never had the opportunity to kill a BULL elk with a rifle. But I will share my 2 cents. Use a 4 blade broadhead on a 550 grain arrow on your 60 pound recurve, and if you do it right they go less than 60 yards...

I hunt with a recurve, compound and rifle, but trying to cover ALL the bases (draws and lottery tags). I reload now so that helps fund my obsession on all my rifles. Very fun... almost too much fun. My call sign says it all... addicted. LOL

Well since I started this thread I now will have a 260, 270 WSM, 338 Federal and a 350 Rem Mag.
LOL, I'm pretty sure I won't be worried about my decision process now.

With a good bullet a .260 Rem. will work very well for elk. I have killed 7 bulls with 7 shots using the 6.5x55. My bullet of choice was the 140 Nosler Partition. Put it in the right place and should have no problems.

For the trouble, time and expense to execute an elk hunt, I would personally take enough gun for a less than perfect shot. For me it would be my .300 Win Mag or my .338-284 with appropriate bullets, probably NPT's in the 180-200 gr. range.
IMHO,
DF
