My youngest son took many a deer and feral hog with that rifle.

Between Post and Gail. I've been quail hunting near Gail and just shooting as fast as I can load my shotgun back in the hayday....and look up and had herds of antelope just standing there looking at me.

We only have 3 on our place now. And they're very gaunt. But still curious....they like to watch us.

I bet the antelope are doing better there than out west.

My sole Texas antelope was from Brewster county and field dressed a whopping 78 lbs, my Dad's the same year dressed 71.

With critters that size a 223 is plenty of gun...

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

So easy a 9 year old girl can do it:

[Linked Image]

And damn if she didn't do it at 10:

[Linked Image]

So her brother had to get one with a 223 this year, at 9:

But maybe you think it's just for lowly coyotes and such? He has that covered too:

No game ever lost, and the 62TSX does hammer them...

I'll stay out of the circle jerk arguments and stick with your question.

You didn't complete the sentence in your question and you did not post again to clarify. If you are wondering "if (you) could KILL deer with it", then the answer is of course you can kill deer with a 223wssm. If you are wondering "if (you) could HUNT deer with it", then the answer is maybe. That would depend upon where you hunt as some places it is legal while other places it is a criminal offense.

I, like you, chose a coyote cartridge that could be doubled for deer. In my case, 50% of my coyote hunting is done where it is criminal to use a .223 on deer. In my case, I chose to use a .243 Winchester for the double duty so that I stay legal.

Good Luck smile

Best post so far.

Can the .223 caliber kill a deer?

Yes it can.

If given a choice would it be my personal pick?

Not a chance as I prefer a little more "margin for error" and that comes with a larger caliber in my opinion. If one is willing to work within the parameters of the platform and caliber the .223 can be an effective caliber for deer. With that said I'd opt for the 25-06 if recoil was an issue, but that's just me.

Probably about the same. I know the guys next to us got somebody to do the counts that are necessary for the landowner permits. Our land owner has told us he'd give us any permits that he got if we went to the trouble. I just can't do it. I'm pretty sure I could take one with a rimfire because I could get close. Kind of like shooting your dog, though.

I would love to go on a Wyoming hunt someday. The speed goats I saw up there were very healthy.

Yep, a .223 worked quite well for this 7yr old girl too...and again when she was 9yrs old. The big one was 138" and 234lbs.

You might want to troll a little deeper. It just ain't working. But I do believe "kbruce" and "Mauser Hunter" are one-in-the-same.

Should be "And they think they're know-it-alls"......or "And they think they know it all". Not sure which you were trying for. You'll catch on sooner or later.

I do love seeing those pics of smiling kids. I just got a Montana 223 and will load up some 62 TTSX's for my 11-yr old daughter. I think that will be better to start out than the 250 Savage. She's never shot a rifle. Tried a 20 Ga one time and hated that. I guess we'll see. May start her out on the 22 Mag.

257,

I think you're going to like that combo. A lot.

This was the old style 62 grain TSX launched from my Kimber SuperAmerica.

[Linked Image]

He dropped on the spot, and the bullet was just inside the off side hide. The shot was 272 yards. The cut on the hog was my dissection looking for the bullet.

But I'm sure some people will tell you it just won't work...whistle

Ignoring you won't work if you're going to continue being a jerk. What am I thinking? How could you be anything else.

Don't know who kbruce is, but it's not me. I don't play those games.

I never claimed to know it all, but you seem to think you do.

Who are you talking to? I assume it's 257 since he's the one insulting you.

Nice! Doesn't that Super America have a 1-12" twist? Does/did it shoot the 62 TSX's okay??

I have a Rem 700 SPS .223 with a 1-12" twist and would like to shoot the 62's.....I've been using the 52 TSX.
