Unfortunately I would have to agree with Marty on the Remington feeding issues, fortunately I haven't had the need for a follow up shot. I am a Remington slut so I would still choose a Remington though over anything else and deal with the feeding by messing with it till I got it right which btw took me about 3 yrs to get it....he he he. Anyway, do a 1-12" twist bbl around 22-23" really all you need and I also have a Douglas #4 too, my rifle has a TI stock and is fairly light and a dream to carry. If you want pics I can be coaxed into it.

A couple of FWIWs. I've heard/read of folks having good luck building 358 WSSMs off the Savage WSM centerfeed action. Just a barrel swap. Also, Match Grade Machine, and some others, will build an Encore barrel in 358 WSSM. With the change in the new law (allows for 1.8" max case length) a couple of folks are shortening a 358 Win, with the shoulder pushed back or shortening 35 Rems to use in bolt actions.
I'm still too poor right now to play with any of them, so am just spouting off about what I've read/heard...

Nice pics Tom, I didn't know Indiana even had a rifle season, I thought you guy's were shotgun/ muzzeloader only up there............Hb We dont have a rifle season, we are shotgun/muzzleloader only. But- Indiana made a law a few yrs ago that stated you could use a rifle if and only if it was .35 or larger and the case length was between 1.16" and 1.625" long......thinking they would outsmart us because very few cartridges fall between that catagory. Anyway that is how the .358 WSSM was born..it is .35 cal obviously and the case is a .25 WSSM necked up to .35 and trimmed at 1.620", I dont think Indiana saw that one coming but couldnt do anything about it because it is legal by their laws. I am sending a 225 grain Accubond at a smidge over 2400 fps and not breathing too hard. Now this last year Indiana expanded that max case length to 1.8" but I am staying where I am because I dont think there is any advantage for me to change.

Tom:
I'm going a slightly different direction. Since the regs now allow 1.8 inch cases, at the suggetion of R. Mann, I am going to use a 35 Rem, trimmed to 1.8 inches (factory length 1.92 inches). We are calling it the 35 Indiana. I will not have to neck up or down, fire form etc and can still use factory dies. Using XP-100 load data, I should be able to get 2200 - 2300 fps with a 200 gr bullet. Enough for IN without too much fuss.
Mark Penrod is going to build the rifle for me. We are trying to match schedules to iron out the details. But will be a Rem 700 SA, likely a Lilja #3 at 22-24 inches (1 in 12).
Thanks for the info in the PM's.

We've looked at trying the new 1.8" case but mine (actually called the 358 Indiana Deer Cartridge) gets 2,550 to 2,570 fps easily with the 200 grain Hornady and 48 grains of Benchmark.
Some other guys do another barrel off the WSSM case and push the same bullet to 2,700. Personally I'm fine with the 2,550. Gives me plenty of velocity and energy out to 300 yards.
I am going to get a box of the new 180 TTSX and the 200 grain accubonds just to see if they will work in the WSSM mag box.
One of my pards has good luck with TAC also, I haven't tried it due to the amount of Benchmark we still have.

Scott So you're the guy R. Mann referred to on his blog reply to me. Cool. Small world. I wonder if the shortened version of the 35 Rem would cycle through a lever action?

Though I'm guessing it would take some fiddling with the mag lips, but I wonder if something like this would make a 700 feed the WSSM better? http://wyattsoutdoor.com/product_info.php/cPath/1/products_id/41
