Seems the Zastava M70's coming out of the Serbian heartland have a real good rep for quality wood and finishing ....NOT!
Have a 7x57 (what else) and whilst the metalwork is not too bad the timber sucks. It aint walnut, probably some fallen down trees that were dragged into the factory and cut up into blanks. Checkering is ..... well.....$$hithou$$e.
I have been thinking of sanding the crapout of it and hitting it with the tru oil OR painting it.
Its a hunting rifle and will be put too good use.
Any ideas - on colours ? Even tempted to duplicate Ingwe's zebra stock!!!!

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

In all fairness - all i have done to the stock is apply some tru oil / turpentine mix (50/50)- two coats so far. I have sealed the barrel channel with tru oil . The action has been bedded and the factory sights taken off (clean and uncluttered look!!)
If the checkering was cut properly it would look much better IMHO

Here's an idea you may wish to consider. Sweet carving rocks!

If it was me and especially with that level of checkering on the forearm I would be re-shaping a bit to make it a lot more rounded rather than the angular shape as is. Make it more hand friendly as a hunter. But that is just me.

Yep. Looks like the grip is thick enough that it can be slimmed along with the rear of the so called finger clearance arches. Diameter of the grip looks to be in the 4.75" range and should be closer to 4.25".
Shave off the offside curl of the MC, etc.
