Other than his website, has he writen for any other publications? I wonder how vast his hunting experience is.
I've read some things on his site that stand to reason but there's other stuff' that to me' doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And then there's other stuff that he just out right contradicts himself.

That .270 Win will kill elk all day long if you do your part and make a good shot. I've taken bulls and cows with the .270 Win for 20 years. In fact my first elk, a cow, was taken with a .243 right through the boiler room at a hair under 100 yds. Just don't try and reach out and touch one at extreme distances and you'll be good to go.

I've killed a lifetime of elk with a 270 and (oh my god) 130 grn bullets. From point blank to 470 yds. No wounded loss and somewhere in the neighborhood of 30+ have died with this cartridge by my hand. Wouldn't hesitate to hunt elk with a 270. It works

This thread is kind of funny after the .223 and .243 for elk threads.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

This thread is kind of funny after the .223 and .243 for elk threads. Maybe I should start an 'elk with a 380 ACP' thread. In Idaho, any big game animal can be hunted with any centerfire round so it's legal.

RockChuck, I don't know about the .380 ACP for elk, might be a tad underpowered. You might try the 9mm Makarov, or perhaps, well, never mind. LOL

Heck, the 25ACP what's stopping you? The preeminent saturday night special. Not sure it works in day light

The 270 is a freaking' meat seeker! Place your shot where it's supposed to go and enjoy some fresh tenderloins. The 270 Win is one of the finest rifle cartridges ever created, IMO. I've put ALOT of elk meat in the freezer with mine over the years. My 270 makes two sounds when it's fired, the report of the shot and the sound of meat hitting the ground!

It makes a lot more noise than that. It also creates a long series of loud pops from my back and knees before the elk arrives at the truck.

I am looking at getting my first hunting rifle! and was hoping for now as a college student to keep it to one rifle for mostly deer, but with the option for occasional elk.
First- reading previous posts I understand the need for the accuracy of the shooter and that is why I have been thinking of the 270. I have shot both that and a 308. The 270 I was consistently accurate to 300 yards where as the 308 (due to flinch and lack of experience I assume had trouble at 200 yards). Different days, but felt uneasy with out practice with the bigger rifle and very comfortable with the 270.
I plan an purchasing and having this year to practice to start hunting this fall. Any advice out there? And how do people feel comfort wise (not so much including accuracy) as dropping elk with their .270s? Go with what feels right. .270 is plenty of rifle- if you use a good bullet. It might be stock fit that made the .270 feel so good to you. If it's possible to buy that rifle (or one just like it), you'll know you are getting a good fit for you. Buy a good scope (which is a whole other question) and mount it in Talley LW rings. Done!

Of all the elk I've seen killed with the 270, none were killed with what you'd call a "good bullet."
Most were 130 off-the-shelf PP's and Corelocts.
Only "good" bullet I've seen used was my own Ballistic Tip.
All of which of course leads me to believe we love to waste our time over ballistic gack which amounts to pole-vaulting mouse turds.

Yeah... suppose so.
I'll still use good bullet though <g>. Those mouse turds WILL trip a guy once every blue moon. Best to just vault right over 'em.
Which NBT did you use, Brad?

I've seen more taken with 130 Horns and 140 Horns as well as 130 Sierra Bt's and NBT's than I have the preme's. For preme's I've used the 130/140/150 and 160 Noz Pt's as well the 130 TSX.
To date I've found one certain thing about the preme's and the non preme's. If they're directed properly the end result is very much the same, an elk that goes to Croak City Wyo very quickly!

Dober Dober, since you've seen more elk die at the end of a 270 than anyone I personally know, I'm going to take your word on that. Aside, while I've only killed one elk with the 270 personally, I've seen more taken with the round than any other (which ain't saying much).

Aisde, aside, a good friend who's guided on more good bulls than anyone I know says he seen little difference how elk die from the 270 - 300's. He thinks it takes the bigger 33's (338 WM and up) to see anything more noticeable in terms of sheer "thump" and reaction to the hit.
