A 1911 that has been worked on. Or, Sig 226, Sig 228, Glock 17, Glock 19 in factory form.

Please excuse the title. I do understand very few of us have ever or will ever use a pistol in combat with another person.
But that's the question. Not hunting or target or cowboy action pistols... but a gun you like specifically for defense.
I liked my Kimber 1911 in this regard, very controllable. Wasn't crazy about the weight or mag capacity. For concealed carry I like my Kahr's but they are relatively close-range weapons in my hands and also only hold 5-6 shots.
I have a 10mm Glock I really like and (here's the gist of the thread) I've got a powerful hankerin' for a Glock 23. Kind of seems like a perfect anti-human combat pistol. I like that I can bolt a light onto it easily and love the mag capacity.
I've done the combat thing. I want a rifle. And friends with rifles. Lots of friends with rifles. And a radio and access to indirect fire. Pretty much any handgun that weighs less than a rifle is a way to fight to a rifle for me. YMMV

I've been digging the M&Ps over the Glocks and XDs that I've been shooting. Can you elaborate? What config and cartridge chambering? When the Smith & Wesson M&P's came on the scene, I found them attractive, but already having an XD in 45ACP, I didn't bite. I wanted for them to get more of a track record. The M&P looks like a smoother contour on the exterior, but I don't know if that translates into any tangible advantage.

or just start out with a shotgun and end it there. A Mossberg sits by the back door ready to go with just a jack of the pump. But I could never get away with carrying it in downtown Seattle.

It would not be dull that is for darned sure. If my 1911 can cause a wet spot to spread across the front of a woman's jeans I am guessing the shotgun would cause baggy bottomed jeans all over the place.

Springfield XD 40 since you specified pistol. If you specified revolver, I'd say S&W Model 686 4".

When I start to get worried that there might really be trouble, I am generally quick to dig out my old 12 gauge.

I carry a Polish P64 always, either as a BUG or a primary.
Does it look like this? No, Like this: Basically like a Walther with more kick. Not a gun I would recommend right out of the box. The triggers are heavy as all heck until the springs are changed. My safety would engage after each shot. That stopped after I changed the firing pin spring. Now it shoots sweet. Changing the firing pin spring takes three hands and a monkey.

Funny thing about the XD. I have the pre XD, when it was stamped HS. It was $185 with two mags. As soon as Springfield started importing it the price went up about $150

Your favorite "combat" pistol?
Cant do this correctly with a keyboard. But I'll try. My choice is the 1911A1. I used one, issue for me should have been a M9, but I was in a position to issue myself a 45. I cant help but think the taste and gritty texture of a 1911A1 inside a man's mouth along with a few of his own busted teeth and plenty of his own blood might be more dominating than the smooth silky finish of an M9 or worse yet a modern plastic "Tactical" handgun offering. I do know you can hold one man's skull against the inside of a sandbag trench wall in this manor and he will stay still without your eyes on him. This is handy if you have to fire further down the trench with an M16-A1 in your other hand. This is all much better explained in a friendly setting with a bonfire and a few beers and in trusted company. Usually regretted on my part no matter what.
Something clever here.

Why not go for softball sized hole? Or at least let the muzzle blast set the bad guys on fire.... Kidding of course.....
