Who cares really.... I knew what you meant and still agree, that is one fine choice in rifle and optic......For a "do all" deer elk, bear, you name it combination I'd reach for that one every time......Just shot my old tang safety 300 win mag after cerekoting it and re-checking scope adjustment and that thing is still impressing the heck out of me.....Ruger 77's are hard to beat for a fine, dependable, tough as nails, accurate hunting rifle....

If I get my Kimber's in '06 and .375 H&H completed and get used to them enough to be confident I will hunt one of those.
If it will shoot TBBC HE loads I would particularly like to use the 84L.

Otherwise, I have a really nice .338 and an '06 FW that will serve again.

Come on, you're from Oregon. You know we only use 338's...... ...and I'm hoping it's a win mag too....

Ha, no joke. Our genius governor is working to eliminate Oregon tax exemption to raise revenue in WA. Guess she doesn't know what will happen to all the WA border towns and businesses once OR residents realize they don't get tax exemption. They'll just stay in OR and spend their money there.

It would help Oregon even more than the shoppers from Washington who make major purchases in Oregon.

The new 270 WSM came. 6 3/4 lbs of custom shooting machine, able to leap tall mountains at a single bound and kill elk DRT with a single shot! If you shoot well you don't need a 338!!!

If you can't handle one then you should stick with your 270......

Didn't say I couldn't handle one, just that I don't need it. I shot a 6 lb 338 Win mag for a while, a 7 lb 358 STA, an 8.5 lb 458 Win mag, another 6.5 lb 300 WSM. They all killed elk effectively, and after 30 some years guiding elk hunters here in Colorado I've had plenty of occasions to see them fail too, because of a poor shooting IMO.
After being in on the taking of several hundred elk over the years I am of the opinion that the real advantage of the fast magnums is in extending one's range, if one is up to that task, and the slower mags, like the 338 win mag just add more thump. Impressive perhaps, but not necessary, again IMO.
I shot both my elk last year with the 7-08 my daughter used when she was a kid. Why? Because it's a nice, pleasant little gun to pack around and shoot, and it is fully up to the task.

Okay, maybe not... I was using 140 gr. Accubonds.

I bet that 358 was a thumper on both ends. What bullets did you like in that one?

I've applied for an Elk permit in Ark. this yr. Actually I've applied EVERY yr except 1. 1 yr I let it slip my mind.

IF, IF I get drawn in 2012, I'll take 2, 1 as a back up.

Tikka T 3 SS 270 Win, 4-12 Swift, 150 gr NPT.

Win 70 Winlite 300 WM, 4-12 Swift, 180 gr NPT.

I have other rifle, cartidge combos that are elk capable but these 2 are the LIGHTEST and SWEETEST.

I was shooting the 250 gr. Hornady's. Speed was 2880 through the chronograph. Yes, it was a thumper. I shot several elk with it and it was effective, but I was not sufficiently impressed that it killed them any deader or faster than any other rifle when shots were well placed.
That one started as a .300 Jarrett and was rebarreled after being shot out. That was the most impressive elk killer I've used. It was pushing 200 gr. Accubonds at 3020 fps, and had heavy recoil as well.
Still, it was more gun than necessary unless it was going to be used somewhere way beyond 500 yards, and that opportunity never came up. Except for one, all my elk have been within 300 yards, and almost all less than 200. The two longest were around 400 and 500 yards, and I took them with an '06 and 180 gr. bullets. It did the job nicely.

Mine will be .50 caliber, only question now is whether it'll be a bull rifle or a cow rifle.
