Hard to believe that a great offer like this has turned the thread into a heated debate! I have posted before that I bowed out for a more deserving member. Being former Navy, I feel that my time in was a walk in the park compared to others. I am fortunate to plan my hunts for the next several years - Africa in two weeks, Antelope/Mulies 2013, Elk 2014, Newfoundland and possibly New Zealand after that.
So if it bothers folks that I don't apply - go piss in someone else's wheaties!
Life is too short to squabble - mend the past, live today, and dream of tomorrow

I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would love to go on this hunt but maybe they didn't see the starter thread?
I would love to be given an opportunity like this but feel that enough guys from the campfire have done plenty for me as is and I would be taking advantage or everyones hospitality if I entered.
Sure hope someone enjoys this trip and take your spouse if you have one!

Obvioulsy, Teal comprehension challenged. NO one said if you didn't want to go, for whatever reason (and it would only cost about $2k not $7k, the price of a mule deer hunt in Wyoming), that you were wrong. What I said was, NO vet, who really is one is going to come on here and say, I don't want it because "I'm a vet and as such see it as a sop or welfare" I already have all I deserve. That's the kind of BS put out by non-vets, who don't like those who are. There are a lot of reasons for not applying, but that not one, and insinuates that REAL vets wouldn't apply..which is BS.. I didn't because I've been to Africa 3 times already and looking at going back this fall..I can afford to go on my own dime, and believe there are deserving people out there who could otherwise only dream of such a hunt, and thank Pieter for offering a free hunt.
broncofuormudy, the application period ended on the 30th of July, so you're probably late, but maybe they'll extend it to have a bigger pool..

Ghost, not all vets have 2k to drop on a deer hunt. I would love to go, but can't for various reasons.
I really hate to see something as good as this being offered deteriorate into personal opinions and the have's and have not's debate. Some of the comments here appear to cheapen a good thing and tarnish a heartfelt and courteous act.
Thank you Pieter and Seafire for a gift and all your doing to help some lucky folks get a wonderful experience.

What a great gesture. All I have is my draft cards from college. I was near the end of the Viet Nam era and got a draft lottery # of over 200. In those days they weren't drafting anywhere near my lottery number...
Dang it, I wish I could say I qualified, I'd love to go. If no one else does qualify, I still have my draft card and will gladly submit it for a trip to Africa...

With as many vets as we have on this site I would have thought that more than 5 would have submitted, maybe I have a shot at winning afterall. I e-mailed my entry so maybe it wasn't received?
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Hell, Dog Hunter deserves this hunt more than I do, I never pulled any combat duty and the only time I ever feared for my life was when I spent some time in PSAB in Saudi Arabia, mostly from camel spiders and pit vipers.
Anywho, Dog Hunter, good luck to you brother!

Well, I served 7 years in the Dental Unit in the Mississippi Army national guard. The only real fighting I did was against tooth decay 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer. That was 1980-87.
We did do a day of survival maneuvers each summer. We all canoed the Okatoma River while drinking beer on 1 day of our summer camp at Camp Shelby.
As an enemy, I don't think tooth decay really matches up well against the Viet Cong or Iraqi Imperial Guard, or heck even the Girl Scouts, so I think I'll let someone else win.

You guys saying you didn't "deserve" it really should reconsider. If your unit was called up, I assume you wouldn't have gone UA, and would have done what you had to do. Dental, band whatever. All MOS's and units have/had the possibility of being provisional rifle units.
Just because you didn't spend your 20's in a timeframe when there were major operations going on doesn't mean squat. I trust you would have deployed if you were told to.
Put your name in the hat and scrounge up enough money for airfare. Sell a gun or forego your beloved hookers for a couple weeks or something. Visit a sperm bank. Work a second job for a couple weekends or something. Anyone can scrounge up the 2 grand if they really want to.
You will wish you had.

I don't think three years of active duty in the Navy near the end of the Cold War qualifies compared to some of these guys. Heck all I fought was rust and dirty dishes...
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

I guess tooth decay doesn't seem so tame of an enemy now. lol. Being a dental specialist in the Guard made me decide to go to pharmacy school.

Times like this I'm reminded of sage advice a friend and trusted E-8 imparted on me upon learning of me doing something noble yet stupid, like extending my tour in Astan: "What the @#$% were you thinking?!?!"
Gents, if there is an opportunity placed in front of you, please take a shot. You just might win. You're not taking advantage, you're allowing someone else to say thanks in a way that means way more to them than just saying "thanks".
