No reason to get one over 5.56 unless it's illegal where you live, for deer.
75 grain TAP all day, and you don't lose the controlability, cheapness, etc. for general use.

.223 and 5.56 is illegal lots of places, unfortunately, VA being one of them. I'd think 6.8 would be just fine for a hunting rifle. I'm no expert, but I think 6.8 SPC is similar to a .270 Win round, which has put a lot of deer on the dinner table.
Or you could buy a .308. Just sayin'.

I noticed TLB2 is from Georgia. I know in Alabama 223 is legal for deer. 6.8 would give a little more smack. Not as powerful as the 270, but same diameter bullets.

You are good to go with .223 in GA. My AR's are all .223/5.56. I have never found a need for a bigger round in them. Not that the 6.8 and other calibers dont have any advantages, just that I wouldn't benefit from them enough to change over.

With the 6.8, go to Silver State Armory for ammo. http://www.ssarmory.com Top drawer stuff. I've used a box stock RRA mid-length on deer for the past three years.

You should try the 5.56 first. I killed mine last year with a 62 grain TSX, this year I am hunting with the $20 a box 62 grain federal fusions. Formidilosus killed one recently with this bullet. Do what makes you happy but in the end you don't need the 6.8 for WT deer in GA, if you got a 5.56 buy a box of fusions, zero at 50 yards and go hunting. Any deer you see between 10 and 200 yards is pot roast.

i have a 6.8 and i'm planning to deer hunt this year with it. if you are going to reload for it make sure you buy the small base dies. without them you may have a few stuck cases .

Coudl be the case on the 6.8 but on the 223, there has never been( I haven't seen it anyway and have been through more barrels than most as a competitor and having a competitor as a wife also...) thats needed a 223 small base die.

Here's another thing...the vast majority of 6.8 chambered weapons are AR types. That is what is being touted as needing small base dies to function. I mean the percentage of guns other than AR types chambered in the 6.8 must be so miniscule to hardly be worthy of note. If this is the case, why would there be anything but small base dies being manufactured?

If the majority are ARs, I would say it should be about impossible to buy a small base die. You simply don't need em IMHO.

I don't use small base dies in my 6.8, or my .223's, or my M1's. They just flat out are not needed.
Go to 68forums.com and do a search. You will find out they do not recommend them either.

The 6.8 SPC is about as good as it gets in the AR Platform. My hunting bullet is the Nosler 110 gr Accubond and AA 2200. Factory loads Silver State Armory is the way to go. Got this buck the first day of VA rifle season last year and the Hog on the Campfire Hog hunt this year with my 6.8.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I'm fairly new to the AR but I really like the 6.8 spc II. It was the reason I got into getting an AR in the first place and I'm really content with the rifle and the 6.8 round. It's tackled an elk with no issue and it's kinda changed me from being such an 30-30 lever gun guy and it's extended my range and capability.
As far as the small base die and extraction issues go, I am not understanding this. It should be superior to the 5.56 because of the case taper which aids in feed and extraction. In design it took ques from the 7.62x39 and I don't see why there are cases sticking.
My only bitch is that the 6.8 isn't our standard cartridge for our armed forces and it's a bit spendy. But in my case I only use it in the field and use the 5.56 or Ak-47 if I need to run lots of rounds.

My guess is that small base dies were needed once-upon-a-time when standards weren't held as close as they are today.

Have never used the 6.8 ouside of Texas hogs and Wyoming whitetails. It's a killer for fast multiple action such as hogs. Mine is the RRA's with a collapsable butt and a 1-4 Leupold.

My guess is that small base dies were needed once-upon-a-time when standards weren't held as close as they are today. I'm not an expert, I've just got a 6.8. The 6.8 hasn't even been around that long. I've never seen any small base dies for it. I assume they exist or they wouldn't be being talked about here. The question is, why? Small base dies existed for the 223/556 and 308/762 because of the proliferation of bolt guns for the rounds, in civilian hands. Then the faux army guns came into play and some decided they needed the extra pressure on the case to make it feed better. It was just discussed on another thread. I think it was BCR or Rost that said they had regular dies that actually were tighter than many small base dies. I'm just saying that the 6.8 was/is different. It came into being for Special Forces in the sandbox and the civilian versions have almost entirely been AR types. There is the odd bolt gun here and there, but that's it. The 6.8 will have to experience a huge upsurge in popularity to ever have much of a following outside AR's. Since it originated in, was popularized in and remains mainly in AR platforms, I don't see how small base dies aren't pretty much the only ones being used anyway, probably just not labeled "small base".

you hear people talking about small base dies when the browning BAR comes up, I wonder how much of this discussion is just internet parrots repeating the same wrong thing someone else said. That or the typical rusted chamber issues get people to "think" a small base die may help, I just don't know. I have two friends with semi automatic single shot BAR's. Nice looking guns.
On the 6.8SPCII I am convinced its a better round than the 5.56, I don't know if its needed but when did need ever justify a new gun purchase. If I ever get one my second purchase will be a case of SSA 85 grain TSX cartridges as I know they are not for sale at Walmart of Academy sports in my neck of the world.
