FWIW, sight dovetails are measured at the widest, and not the narrowest, part.
The female dovetail slot on your Savage should have been cut to the US standard 3/8", for which several different slot filler blanks are available from MidwayUSA and/or Brownell's -
OR- One can be filed out of the male dovetail section of any old longleaf rear sight, usually available for a dollar ot three from a gunsmith, or free, from your scrounge box.
