John Wooters has long been one of my favorite gun writers. I'm saddened to read of his passing. May he rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of speaking with John Wootters last summer when he called about joining this forum. He said he still had the Sako and told one of the many people who offered to buy it from him that it would probably be buried with him. He admitted that wouldn't be the case since he wasn't likely going to be buried. So, that particular .308 may, indeed, see some more action.
He was truly thankful for all the comments about him on this forum and I'm sure he would have joined if his health had held out.

This is sad news. I know he was famous for the Sako 308 but he got me started on looking at the 280 rem when he wrote about the cartridge and rifle he had built by Joe Balakie in a magazine, All Around Rifles back around 1980.

Great writer and a loss to the hunting/shooting world.

RIP. He was one of my favorites growing up. He started my love for Winchester Model 88s

Sad news. RIP.

I've read most of his articles and enjoyed them; he'll be missed. I grew up reading Phil Sharpe, Jack O'Connor, Warren Page, etc. I'll miss his articles.

One of the first hunting articles I read was written by John. I always enjoyed his writing. I will pray for him and his family.

Always enjoyed John Wooters and Gary Sitton's writing in Petersen's Hunting, about once a year I dig out my old copies and re-read all the articles from both of them, I think I'll go do that tomorrow. RIP

I was sad when I saw this a couple of days ago, he always struck me as a plain talking no bluster gun guy, I'll miss him.
The 416Taylor I'm building will remind me of his work.
Still miss Bob Milek too.

I always enjoyed reading his work. Still have a lot of old Petersen's Hunting I re-read from time to time. A true Sportsman and a gifted writer. RIP

It was nearly 20 years ago that John Wootters was very kind to me: Like most who've sent their condolences and thanks for his work and often personal encouragement, I sent John a manuscript on the .45-70 that I hoped to publish.

He was very positive and encouraging, making some recommendations which was expected. But what was most heart warming to myself was his sharing himself with me in this sense: telling me his ventures with his long-barreled Ruger #1 in taking a big leopard as well as information about his .416 Taylor and its use in Africa.

In 1997 I published my first edition of a handloading journal on the .45-70, and Mr. Wootters played a major role in my daring to proceed with it. It has gone through several editions by now and has been my best seller by far. Thanks John. RIP.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wooters but have talked to several people who have and all were struck by what a true gentleman he was. I always really enjoyed reading his work.

Over the last few years his local paper the West Kerr Current ran what seems to be new articles by him. The papers website doesn't have a search function but I was able to find many of the articles by google

Sometimes it seems that you don't hear the kind words about a man until he has passed away. I enjoyed his writing and am glad to find out from those that knew him that he was the kind of guy I suspected he was.

He was excellent, I enjoyed reading his hunting adventures and insight. Up there with Barsness and O'Connor being one of the few I paid money to read.
