Willie Plays for Troops Injured in Iraq

02/18/2006 2:38 PM, AP

Willie Nelson warmed up for a concert by playing a long freebie gig for soldiers injured in Iraq.

For the second straight year, Nelson squeezed in a show at Brooke Army Medical Center on Friday while he and his band were in San Antonio to play at the city's annual rodeo.

"I have a lot of respect for the military," said Nelson, 72, an Air Force veteran. "I like to show them that I support them every chance I get. ... We get as much out of it as (the soldiers)."

A year ago, the singer wore out his voice singing 11 songs at the Army hospital and had to cancel his performance at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

Hundreds of patients, family members and hospital staff clapped and cheered Friday as Nelson walked into the hospital's atrium.

He opened, as usual, with "Whiskey River." After more than an hour and 22 numbers including standbys like "On the Road Again" and "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" he finally set down his well-worn acoustic guitar and was mobbed by fans.

Sgt. 1st Class Alan Hornaday, badly wounded in a suicide car bombing in Baghdad in 2004, had a front-row seat for the concert.

"This is really cool, him being able to come out and visit soldiers and entertain them," said Hornaday, a National Guardsman from Fordyce, Ark., who also saw Nelson here last year. "It picks everybody's spirits up. ... It means a lot."

Yeah, but is going to sing his new queer song. If it was me
I'd rather pass. I enjoyed Anita Bryant, who took

First, I praise Willie for singing at Brooks!

But, I was at the concert later at the SA rodeo and he was absolutely well bad is the best I can do! No, he did not sing the queer thingy and forgot the words on most of the old time favorites. Finally near the end he was loud enough to hear a couple of lines! Willie, unfortunately can no longer "get er dun" twice in a day!

muygrande,

At least it's good that Willie used up his voice "and whatever" at the right place--Brooke Army Medical Center.

Certainly, you find nothing but total agreement from these quarters! I will catch him on the flip side at Flores Store next goround! I do wish I had heard him sing the queer thingy for the first time in public! Kinda like adding another "booner" to the wall of horns!

I saw Willie live way back in the early eighties. He's due here in Atlanta for performances Feb.23 and 24th. My son bought tickets for my birthday,we'll see him the 24th. I too am disapointed in his [bleep] song, but will wait and see how old Willie puts on the show.

I figure Willie has recorded 10 or 15 songs per album, for 40 or 60 albums, (400-900 songs?). If he has recorded one song, that he didn't write, making fun of drugstore cowboys, thats OK by me. What I like about Willie is he has ALWAYS been a supporter of the American Farmer, he has stepped up to the plate to raise money and awareness for hurricane victims, especially farmers. I think he is a hell of a song writer, with a good sense of humor, and not too proud to poke fun at himself.

And I give the guy credit for being out there touring and making music, most folks are happily retired by the age of 70+.

What's the old song say?, "I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was".

I'm glad he gave his best for the injured troops, I wish all the CW stars would do the same.

I will say that the acoustics in the SBC center are absolutely horrible, If he can't be heard its gotta be the sound guys more'n him, no one could sing to that place by themselves.

If he HAD sung that gay cowboy song, it'd be interesting to see the reaction from the crowd

I confess, I have always found Mr Nelson to be way overrated on all but a couple of songs. George Jones on the other hand, that man has a gift.

The man is a patriot. He is entertaining our troops and deserves nothing but praise and encouragement for that. Some of y'all need to grow up. You make it sound like this is some playground at a Junior High School.

Patriot? Get you head outta your azz!

If refusing to buy into all this PC crap and not accept [bleep] as an alternative lifestyle instead of being an abominatiuon,
is childish, then a pox on you and yours!

Hope Willie saves you a turd to smoke in hell. Because that's where you are a goin, and rightly so.

That's because most of them haven't squandered all their money on booze, broads, and drugs. Willie will need to work till he dies just to pay his back taxes!

I'm surprised he has enough unfried brain cells left to even know what state he's in while in concert. No wonder he forgets
the lyrics?

Just a passing note(pun intended) though. If Adolf Hitler
was capable of writing and singing songs, would he be a Patriot too? I'm very surprised at what some people use
as a measuring stick as to the charater of another?

On the brighter side, Willie's new bio-diesel will have a special organic ingredient that will doubtless make the smoke much more pleasing to the greenies that inhale it. Might even see groups of them following semis in their Hondas and singin' "On The Road Again", with their heads out the windows?

If he made one wounded vet's day a bit happier by singing to them, so be it.

To me Willy's career is like a bag of sunflower seeds. There is whole a bunch of good ones, but when you get a bad one, it takes a long time to get that taste out of your mouth.

It only takes one bad thing to cancel out a whole bunch of good. I personally have lost most of the respect I had for him as far as an entertainer and would not spend a nickel to see him in concert.

280 Don:

What?

"The man is, and always has been, a bleeding heart liberal!"

I am what you might term, "ultra-conservative". Certainly I am far to the right of our President. I also believe that Willie has the right to his views. I don't share many of them, but that's what many of my ancestors going clear back to the Revolution and in EVERY major war in our history, have fought and died for.

"Patriot? Get you head outta your azz!"

Perhaps I used the word too loosely but I have great respect for somebody who has the assets that he has yet still finds the time to devote to our service people.

"If refusing to buy into all this PC crap and not accept [bleep] as an alternative lifestyle instead of being an abominatiuon,
is childish, then a pox on you and yours!"

In the first place, I have not "bought into" "[bleep]". As a Christian, I do not agree with it and recognize it as a sin. I also recognize looking upon a woman other than my wife with lust in my heart as a sin. Which is worse in the eyes of God? I know which I consider the greater sin, but won't even presume to speak for the Almighty. All are sinners and have fallen short of the grace of God, save for one man. Homosexuals who are saved are saved and that's that. Just because I disagree with a person's lifestyle doesn't give me the right to engage in childish and hurtful denigration of them. That's what I've seen since the "Brokeback Mountain" movie came out. It was completely successful in that it brings a lot of light to the homosexual agenda. Light that wouldn't be brought to it if some of y'all would excercise some restraint and just ignore it instead of getting all bothered. I am a heterosexual and quite comfortable in my heterosexuality. I see a lot of infantile crap being spewed here that serves no purpose other than to bring more debate about the subject and probably further it, in the end. How does a person bring a homosexual to Christ by calling them degrading names?

"A pox on me and mine"? What's up with that? Just because I excercised my First Amendment right on a message board? That, my friend, is basically a curse thrown at me and my family. Are you a Christian? If you are, do you think that is behavior that Jesus would approve of? I could give you my opinion that you are one sorry POS for saying such a thing with no provocation whatsoever, especially since I singaled out nobody with my comments. I won't do that though as it would be almost as childish as the "[bleep]" comments that you've engaged in.

"Hope Willie saves you a turd to smoke in hell. Because that's where you are a goin, and rightly so."

No sonny, my name is written in the book of life and I am headed for Heaven when I die. Once again, do you think your own behavior in wishing such a thing is very Christian?

On the rest of your post, it's pretty much just jibberish and not worth responding to. Glad I saw this so I can now ID you as a flamer and unworthy of a response.

One more thing 280don...For no more than I've said here, this is one of the most hateful things I've ever seen on a message board. I recognize your right to your opinion, but where do you get off throwing out a curse because of it AND what in the world would you bring my family into it for? IMO you need to re-examine your values. Obviously you harbor some sort of belief in God and an afterlife, but evidently you don't believe that your own behavior is sinful. In the USA you have every right to such beliefs, but they are at odds with the Bible.

I don't go around calling every effeminate-looking man I see a "[bleep]". As an American, it is none of my business as, if it is against the law in a particular community, it is almost certain that the law isn't enforced (assuming the person is even gay). If I am talking with a person and my opinion is elicited on the subject, I will readily give it that homosexuality is wrong and an abomination to God. I don't hate the person for being homosexual, I hate the sin of their homosexuality. The good news is that they can be forgiven and go to Heaven when they die, simply by accepting the fact that Jesus is God and died for their sins. They themselves need do nothing for Jesus did it all for them. This is my belief and I can accept the fact that it may not be your own. I will say however, that this is probably the orthodox Calvinist viewpoint on the subject (roughly dividing Christianity into the two camps of Calvinism and Armenism, just for the sake of this point).

Certainly wishing harm to befall others, especially their family, isn't Biblical.

Ethan Edwards,

Both of your responses showed a lot of class.

When I hear people saying that this person or that person is going to hell for this or that, I usually wonder if that person sitting in the judgement seat has read much of the New Testament.

I also appreciate your well thought out response, as I was considering a response that neither I nor my saviour Jesus, would have been proud of. Your response reminded me how to behave.

I like Willie Nelson a lot! I don't agree with all he says or does. I can't think of anyone that I agree with all of the time.

Tending to the needs of injured soldiers seems like a cause that everyone in this country could support.

Thanks [bleep]. I do things all the time that I'm sure my Saviour doesn't approve of. It just struck me as a great thing that Willie was doing for the troops. I also salute his own service to our great country.

I'll say one more thing for old Willie...He made some westerns when nobody else was making any. They weren't entirely ones that I'd have made, but they were entertaining even if not The Searchers or The Outlaw Josey Wales. Barbarosa and The Red Headed Stranger are pretty good when you're starved for a new western.
