Any in my house get killed, if I can. Outside, unless they've made a web across where I walk, I generally leave them alone. They catch and kill skeeters and gnats.

I predict that this post may live in infamy......... forever.

One morning...recovering from a hangover....I hear the Girlfriend screaming. I went back to sleep.

It just so happens, i had cut my hand severely the week before...She called me....called me again....Then grabbed my hand. I's AWAKE.

She hands me a flyswatter and directs me to the bathroom....Says "There it is, Kill it"

Well, I got big hands....This critter was darn near half the size of one of my paws. I figured I needed a little more ammunition for this beast so I took the hat off my head and clobbered it. Then clobbered it again. I think i hit that thing like 6 or 7 times.

The crisis finally ended, I went out into the tool shed and brought in the Entrenching tool....Scooped up the remains and tossed it out the back door. I swear I heard a "Thud" when it hit the ground.

Wolf spiders.............Gotta love 'em.

That's what I figure, too. They just rot the living flesh away, and keep doing so for years after the bite.

A veterinarian discovered a way to prevent that, though. He discovered that if you inject the bite site with cortisone steroid all around it, multiple injections, that it will heal it right up with little to no damage, so long as you do it within the first few hours after the bite.

I just posted the link for the benefit of the campfire forum members. A recluse bite is a biitch, and this treatment saved a friend's arm.

no, its brown recluse venom, causes the body to have an autoimmune response and the body starts destroying healthy tissue....

i would rather take a hit from a copperhead than a brown recluse....

you believe that, which is just talking about Australia, ill believe the scientists studying the spiders, specifically their venom....and keep in mind that page you just linked has no peer reviewed medical papers attached to it....has a couple of news stories on the bottom....

do like the one story saying a house is loaded with recluse and no bites.....i lived on a property loaded with black widows and never got bit...doesnt mean they arent venomous....

Hello Rattler, I was under the impression that the Recluse spider carried a bacterium in it's saliva/venom that causes the necrosis?

no, its not a bacterium, its a protien in the venom setting off a localized autoimmune response which is why as noted above, the application of steroids seems to help....the body is turning on itself like it does in rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.......

Good sized spider can bring out the Edwin Kemper in me.

I'm glad to know there are other spider haters. I figured it was just a thing with guys named Les (I'm a Les too). I friggen hate the bastids everyone of them I don't care what type of where they are. I do enjoy hunting them with my S&W model 63, 22lr ratshot is perfect for the bastids, ewww gives me chills thinking about them...

It's the smaller ones that seem dangerous in these parts - ain't had the full spider experience until a BR hits you in a bad place.

Not according to the medical literature. Like I said, it's mostly likely something else, probably MRSA.
