In all fairness I doubt if the broken stock pictured above had much to do with McMillan. Its a stock for a rifle that Celt built for me and my GUESS is that too much material was removed around the lug prior to bedding and then the bedding probably had large voids causing the weakness. I never dug into the bedding to verify it. There was little to no material removed at the surface.

BUT, the below stock had the cracks right out of the box, which I opened.

Stick ... in all seriousness ... you're saying you've NEVER had a single flaw in any of the stocks you've ordered from McMillan? Not a single scratch, wrong LOP, poor inletting or wrong inletting, crack(s), wrong studs (either wrong number, wrong placement, poor job setting them, etc) ... nothing???

I'm not doubting you ... just trying to be absolutely sure this is what you're saying ...

I can understand if you've never had a problem getting it to 100% over time ... but I would be simply amazed (to say the least) that you've never had an issue that needed their attention (or someone else's) right out of the box the first time ...

Actually that would be 4 instances, two broken stocks and two wrong LOP's. They made it right, but like Mtn Hunter, thats high percentages, not to mention all the extra time....

I have no dog in the does McM screw up fight ....

But we have heard of 4 on this thread ... and maybe a total of 10-12-15 here on 24HCF in the nearly 4 years I've been here .... How many hundreds has Rick sold ... how many hundreds of internet specials and direct orders have members purchased directly from McM.

I'm going to have to go with the statisics here, If I ever wanted a synthetic stock, it would be McM. Good thing I perfer wood handles on my fire stix!

Seems Mtn Hunter and I have 10. I know CAS had several issues, swapped brands, but is back, WGM and of course Chuck Nelson. Thats just what I can think of off the top of my head without any research. Your 15 number is conservative.

Everything has arrived,as specified.

I've had color schemes that didn't align with what I had envisioned, when I initially pulled them outta the hat,but that's on me.

Now I haven't had a buncha weird stuff twisted up,only 700's shorts and longs,Sevens,600,a Sako L61R,a 54 Winchester(Hornet),a 54 Anschutz,and a S/S Winnie 70 Classic Whizzum and 10/22's. Might coulda forgot something,somewhere.

Haven't done very many weird patterns either,just Remmie Classics,Mountains,KS Mountain,Model Sevens,a Sporter,HTG's,A2's,A3,A5's,Anschutz Sillywet,Anschutz Sillywet T-hole,Winchester Classic,Winchester G&H and a BR. Might coulda forgot something,somewhere.

Anymore,I go Decelerator on everything, love gelcoat and wouldn't touch paint(anybody's paint). Have done a few Fibergrains and like the theory better than the application.

Never got too weird on studs and typically drive a brace of Uncle Mike's in the usual locations,or flushcups in same.

I'm familiar with barrel contours and shank dimensioning and can relate same with accuracy. If in doubt,I bump the inlet and bed the difference. That can only happen when I have neither the stock or barreled action,in hand, indicative of a rush on my end and gunning from the hip.

Have largely explored the plethora of available fill weights and am thinking my lightest is a KS Mountain L/A on my 25-06AI that goes 26oz with paint, pad, studs and bedding. The heaviest a solid filled A5 upon a 308,that I never weighed.

Have only dabbled in contours from sub #1 to a straight 1.350" bull.

I'm amazed that others can't relay their wishes,to the horse's mouth,I have never had a glitch........................

Perhaps so ... but not significantly enough to alter my perception of the company. Just when McM DOES screw up, it gets a lotta press here. If at all possible (and I'm sure it isn't, because it would 100% participation from all members ... and that ain't happening). A poll of ALL McM users here on the 'fire and how many were disatisfied with the inital stock they received. I'm betting well less than 5% .... how many problems were resolved after the first trip back .... I bet the number drops by MORE than an order of magnitude!

Seriously, think of all the different McM stocks we have seen here, and how many gripes? but it only takes one bitch to screw-up 1000 good jobs!

Stick ... I'd say you've been plain lucky ... not "making your own luck" in this regard ... I had my order placed very specifically, and correctly ... and when I talked with Lynn about it, she pulled up the order and verified that I had told her a 1.5" shank, not a 1" shank (which is what the inletting was done for) ... "Luckily" for me the inletting was too "short", and could easily be bumped forward to accommodate the bbl ... but had it been reversed, they would be making a new stock ...

Now, I didn't screw up in placing the order ... and McMillan verified that it was their mistake ... so "a man makes his own luck" doesn't much apply here ... McMillan isn't beyond mistakes ... and I'm not bent because of that ... I simply sent the stock back for corrections ... it's just funny that you've got 50+ w/out a single issue, and my first is back there for repairs ... when both of us have ordered properly ...

we might make our own luck most of the time ... but there are times when schitt happens ... You seem to be WAY ahead of the game with regards to your McMillan stocks ... and I sincerely hope your "luck" continues with them ...

but in the end, I still wouldn't pick another brand over McM ...

I placed an order for a Hunter's Edge about 3 weeks ago. This will be the first time I've ordered one this finished. Its ordered as:

Rem 700 S/A
R/H
13.4" LOP
CDI (inletting)
#2 Lilja (1.125" shank)
Studs
Brown paint
ADL format

We'll see how she measures up when the lil brown truck shows and I'll bring this thread back up. Believe me, if it ain't right, I'll post a few pics on what I consider flaws. And we'll have a nice lil bitch and moan 'fest! (grin)

Now if she's perfect, I'll ship a box of X bullits to short schitt up North! Fair enough?

In the past, I've seen all kinds of goofs. Incorrect barrel channel inletting, stock halfs mated up crooked, incorrect bolt notches, poor tang inletting, huge air voids (poured Cieba Geige down the hatch) etc.

What I said was I had 50-ish and pards were good for that many more,so it's 100-ish.

Nobody has bitched or uttered a word contrary. A coupla boys tenbd top order a barrel inlet a contour generous,so as to bed the shank and have float built-in. I do that too,on some stuff, but stay closer toi tolerance to stuff I'm gonna FL bed,for weight savings.

I've faith in my ability to order concisely, for obvious reasons.

'Course the boys make me order for them too,as a matter of course and my preference is to get Lynn on the horn.

'Humper and I are procrastinating extries, mebbe one of 'em will be scratched?!!?..................
