HBB,

Yep the buck came from Sonora off one of the ranches that I realized is probably my favorite.

As far as rifles, This buck was taken with a 25-06. We took two bucks with this rifle. Preformance was great.
I really like magnum rifles. The 300 win mag is probably my all time favorite for coues. Not because its better, but because I like the bullet choices and different uses for the rifle.
The Rifles I favor the most are: 300 mag (any), 7mm mag (any), 270 (any), 25-06. Any of those rifle equiped with a 3x9 scope or better, and you have a great coues gun. I have used them all, including the 308 and the 243, but the above are the ones I think are better for the task.

Kique

Kique,
I really like and have whacked whitetails with all your caliber choices.

The .300 Win. Magnum (I just love the way a .300 folds up a whitetail) was my go to gun for a long time until my recent affair (lust) with the .280 AI.

I also have a big soft spot for the .25/06. And the .270 was my first really super accurate "big game" rifle after I learned the ropes with a 6MM Remington, so it will always remain one of my favorites.

Another recent gun love is the .300 RUM. Just like the .300 Winny except super-sized

I'd also bet chasing Coues deer in Sonora [ Aside from the differences in elevation and size of the territory.] [Additionally, no I'm not saying its a direct apples to apples comparison for those of you who are humorless. I'm saying its not completely alien in concept] isn't totally unlike chasing whitetails in the hills of NC and SW VA.

Contrary to popular belief, you can hunt deer here without staying in the thick timber or ridin a treestand if you don't mind doing some humpin in the mountains.

In places (i.e ridgetop to ridgetop or across cutovers) we can also get some long shots and glassing is useful too.

The coues and our deer also appear to be comparable in size. Though ours may be just a bit larger on average.

Great pictures and interesting information.

Thanks for sharing,

HBB

Only 28 more posts to go

Incidentally, how many goals did Wayne Gretszky (sp?) score in his career?

Perhaps we should make this number our next post count goal in honor of the Canadian spirit of this thread

Back to Enrique's choices, I'm hot for the 257 Weatherby lately. Just love what that bad boy will do with the 100 TSX's. May take the ride to CO this fall as backup for Muleys and Elk if I get drawn... Gotta imagine it would be stong juju for Coues as well.

Heck yes!! I have not used the 257 Roy, but have heard great things and am excited that one of my hunters this year is bringing his 257 Roy to AZ on a hunt this fall (hopefully).

Also remember just because I don't consider it as a favorite doesn't mean it doesn't work. I just favor some over others.

heck you ought to come Coues hunting with me sometime. We'll put that 257 to work on pint size deer.
Can you hit an 6 to 8 inch vital at say 500/600 yards? We can get you closer, just curious what you'd say. .

Nevewr had much opportunity to try. Can generally hold MOA at 200, so am guessin' it's just more of the same. Course, if you can, I'm guessin' I'd be more comfortable gettin' closer. Workin' on a Colorado Muley and Elk hunt this year, but might have to talk about it next year. What's the season on Coues?

BTW, once you try the Roy you may add it to the list of favorites.

Closer is always better thats for sure. I'd rather have someone shoot 200 yards than 400+ yards.

AZ coues deer run in October (27- nov 1), November (10-19) and December (15?-31).
Sonora, the hunts are in December and January.

Pertaining to the name of this thread. Are you as confussed as this little guy who thinks he's a cow and hangs out with them around a road?
