Inuit I worked and travelled with in the Canadian Arctic used the .222 Remington as standard seal, caribou and frequent polar bear cartridge.
Before the .222 Remington they used the .22 Hornet for seal and Caribou and on polar bears with head shots
I witnessed regularly Peary caribou being taken with .22 long rifle solids.
Shots within 75 yards.
The .243 was looked upon as quite a versatile all rounder, from seal to Polar bear.
Reason for all this really was that polar bears often were shot as a bonus while seal hunting.
The Inuit did understand the concept of bullet placement.
If they strictly would single out polar bear then they would borrow or bring their own .270, .308, or 30-06. I never saw anything larger then that.

.22LR, .223, .220 Swift, .243, .25-06, .257 Wby, .270, 7RM, 7x57 (lots), .375H&H, .416 Rigby, .45 ACP, .41 Mag, damn forgot the old boring .30-06, 9.3x62. I think that is all. Just for clarification, the .375's and .416's were just used in doe season just to get used to shooting game with the big bores, often carried them for a while to pop the occasional coyote.
