I've been offered a MkV take off barrel in 270 Wby cheap, and it appears with a low round count. Would that be a straight forward installation on my Vanguard S1 magnum long action ? Or does the different lug set up make it a balls-up?

For me it would be the 340. Fast and flat, and enough juice for really big stuff. One of my wildcats and the rifle I have killed the most game with (well into the hundreds of head of big game, a couple of continents) is essentially a short neck longer bodied 340WBY. 225gr TTSX's at 3100fps are a marvelous combination.
Since I don't have to limit to just one, I also have a 257BEE for deer and similar sized animals. I like that one a lot, too. With the 4 or 5 257WBY's I have owned since the early 80's, 40 or 50 deer at least. Many here have shot more than my number, but IME the 257 WBY is an ideal deer smacker.
LOVE God, LOVE your family, LOVE your country, LIKE guns and sports.

I use 90gr of VV N-165 Fotis. Very accurate.

You bet/ Velocity was a bit over 3100, no pressure signs at all and as you can see, accuracy was ok. I also crimped using a Lee Factory Crimp Die. I do that with just about all my reloads now.

Georgie,
Pass the 338Ultra/210XLC at 3400fps...via '22 and twin-lugs.
Hint.............
