Will all the Rugers and Smith's be relegated to the back of the safe? Will they be sold? It's headed this way... Travis

The box is marked for .44 Special. Kinda muscular for a 44 Spl ain't it???

Hey Travis!
I for one, think you nailed it with the .44 Speecial!
My Ruger flat top .44 Special 4-5/8" is my all-time favorite big bore single action. I'm thinking you have one just like it?
The logical next step up is the same gun in a Fredom Arms.
Congrats, and GFY!!!! (GRIN!)

That one in a 5.5 inch I would label as the absolute ultimate revolver! Ive got a sweet tuned, honed and stone 4" Model66 Id be willing to trade...along with a vintage Randall, and my first born male child....

Outstanding! You need a copy of Brian Pearce's article in Handloader on loading the 44spl in the FA 97, it's comprehensive, as always.
Great little gun with some nice options. You might try scoping it one day as the accuracy should be terrific. Check out David Bradshaw's thread at Singleactions forum on shooting the FA 83 in 45 Colt with a 4 5/8" barrel scoped. It's an eye opener.
What leather you going to get for it?

Congrats! Here's a link to the Brian Pearce article -- lots of great info there. http://www.goodrichfamilyassoc.org/44_Special_Articles/Brian%20Pearce%20on%20the%2044%20Special.pdfI have a standard butt 5 1/2" FA97 in .44 special -- it's one of the most accurate guns I own. I haven't found a bullet that can't be used in this gun. Also have a 3 1/2" Round Butt .45 Colt/.45 ACP (was out shooting it w/.45 ACP cyl yesterday) and a 4 1/4" standard butt .45 Colt -- the FA97 is one of my favorites -- every time I pick one up, I just can't keep from smiling. Enjoy! Paul

Congrats Travis, I have the same gun in .44 Spl except that it's the regular grip instead of the round butt design.
Complete with black micarta grips, trigger stop, action tune, and the 4.25" barrel. Abslutely easy to carry as a "pack" gun!

I believe perfection is God's bailiwick, but that FA 44 Spl, easily resides in a high level of excellence.
Stellar choice!

You're gonna love that round butt. It really makes those short barreled FA handle like a dream. Next revolver I buy will be a round butted 97 in 22lr and a 5.5" barrel unless you can't stand that 44. In that case you send me a PM and I will make an exception...

Now I have been know to on occasion point out the benefits of certain guns and calibers...but that doesn't mean anyone has to listen.... Cuz if he had listened heda bought that Model 83/.44 that I found for him too...so my influence can only go so far as a man's willin' to run himself into debt... Bob

i hate hate to admit it, but have come close to buying one of those lipsey's more than once. I just got mine off Gunbroker this week. I bought a 4 5/8" barrel. So far I love it. It is a heavy little chunk, but it shoots so nice. I'm thinking about gunleather for mine too. Just haven't made up my mind yet. Was about to put an order in for a simply rugged, but I really want a holster and belt rig. I guess I'll know it when I see it.

Thanks to everybody for the replies. I was out on the golf course all day. I have been kicking around a custom like EdM or Whitworth often post. But I had not yet pulled the trigger. After handling RJM's gun (WTF?) I got to thinking that in a .44 Special may be perfection, and also hold resale value if I decided I wanted something different. I will shoot it a bit before making the final decision but if I like it as much as I predict I will, I'll just sell some other stuff and make this my official go to. So I don't consider it spending a lot of coin, just shuffling coin that has already been spent anyway. Or somethin'... Travis

I do and I doubt I can bring myself to sell it. I'm thinking I will keep all three of my .44 Specials and likely move most everything else. I have a Delta and a 29-2 that I don't see getting used much any more... Travis

Travis, that is sweet looking iron there.
Is it a coincidence, Bob passed through our camps and new revolvers start following us home.
Nope, I can not really blame my latest acquisition on Bob. My newest is a Ruger in 327. And Bob did not set that example.

Tough to top that one, Travis - I'll look forward to hearing more on it. I have the stainless 4-5/8 version of the Ruger flat top 44 spl and it's a keeper, but that FA 97 could easily replace most of the handguns I have. I have a FA 83 and love it, but feel they really nailed it with the 97...

Get the Milt's. I've been wearing them for years, with a couple different calibers. You have to carry and wear them in a bit, but them you just don't even feel them after a while. It's like you have another wallet on you.

.44 Special is probably the perfect big bore revolver cartridge. Back in the early 60's when Keith/Jordan/Skeeter were pushing for a .40-41 Police round if the ammo companies had just done as Keith recommended and put a 250 grain SWC in place of the 246 LRN and bumped the velocity up to 950-1000 from a 4" gun it would have been a done deal...and no need for the .41 Magnum.
The guns were already there...the 1950 Outdoorsman and the .38/44 HD Model of 1950.
The FA 97 is the perfect size for the .44 Special but was the last centerfire round chambered for it. First ones were .357 and .45 Colt, then .41 Magnum and .32 H&R Magnum....the .44 Special seemed to be an afterthought. Yet of the larger caliber rounds it is the only one that can take all bullets made as with the .357/.41/.45 Colt the cylinder is too short even for a Keith bullet or long nosed LBT if crimped in the standard crimping groove just like the S&W Model 27 is in .357 Magnum...
The only "problem" (if you want to consider it a problem) with the FAs guns is that the chambers are so tight and leads into the forcing cones so short that some cast bullets (like a wide front driving band Keith and some LBTs) can't be seated in the chambers. In my two .41s a real Keith 220 grain will not seat but the Lyman version that has a front driving band just a little narrower will. So it is something to consider before buying a bullet in bulk...
Glad to help you find what you were dreaming about Travis....hopefully on my next trip out west we can shoot again...

I assume you'd like some lead?
Poured 250 more today....gonna ship out a big, heavy ass box when I get them gizzed up.... We'll take it off the top of the 29. Travis

I'll just crimp over the front driving band and add more powder. Travis

...I thought it was supposed to be the other way around...less powder...not more...
But since it is a FA it really won't make any difference...

Will all the Rugers and Smith's be relegated to the back of the safe? Will they be sold? It's headed this way... Travis The only thing I don't like about the FA revolvers is the grip frame shape, just doesn't feel right in my hand...REALLY wish it did. Because if it did, I'd have the EXACT same revolver. You're going to have a lot of fun with that one! VERY nice sir.

I have an 83 in 454, about 20 of those at full tilt is about all of the fun I can stand. A 360 gn WNFP at 1000fps will go through anything I have shot with it.

Travis Since you'll be in Milwaukee or Chicago, stop by.... Naw, I have a 214gr. wadcutter/hermaphrodite LEE mould for you, for Yom Kippur. You want 400-500 Hornady 240gr. swaged jobs? Neal said I should give them to you, so they're yours if you want 'em. Have 200 WFNGC, 250-K, 280 WFN, 280 LFNGC, 300 WFN, 300 WLNGC and 350WLNGC for Ube 44 moulds....just need throat/fit diameter...and hardness you want.

Forget pics, Flave.
I want video when it comes in.
Sweet grab but your killin me here. Got rifles I don't shoot much...might have to be trippin' some to get me a really nice wheeler.
Can't decide between a FA or sending a Ruger to the likes of Bowen or Reeder...
(If I went FA I'd probably just go .454 and shoot Colts in her. I Flirted with the idea of a .475 but that may be too much of a good thing)

The round butt is uber. Very uber. Extremely uber.
I also wanted a custom Ruger, but (for now anyway) decided on this. Mostly because it is simply everything I want in a single action six gun. The Ruger's are nice, but if I were to sell one, I'd lose my ass. In my opinion the FA is a safer bet, and hopefully just as accurate.
I really like those 83's, but I needed something that I could carry all the time, and so when RJM e-mailed the link to this 97, I caved.
If I ordered an 83 it would be in a .44 Mag and round butt and the black micarta. I'd also go 6"-ish more than likely.

The best thing about these revolvers is that it is like having one more shot than the cylinder holds. After you have missed with the cylinder full, you can still throw the gun at it...

Yes, I had my Ruger Redhawk 44mag sent to Bowen for some work.
Guessin' I'd not likely see a return on my investment on it.
Plus I ordered a Milt Sparks holster for it, so I'm almost married to this Redhawk, lol!

My issue is how far the grip frame is from the trigger, just feels awkward in my hand. The Ruger Bisley grip frame feels perfect to me...and I like those to be subtly round butted also. Still, Travis has exquisite taste in revolvers. That is one sweet honey of a revolver right there!!

Been wanting one of those for a long time...won't happen soon though.
Thinking about getting a flattop Ruger for now, what kind of loads you running in it? In the FA? I don't have it yet. Or are you asking about my Flattop? Travis

Travis, I been watching this thread for a few days and can not hold my peace any longer, you need fair warning. While I can certainly be happy for you over the recent purchase of your new FA 97, the impending sale of your Model 29 will come with disaster following. When a man sells or trades a Model 29 it starts an immediate chain reaction of events and physical manifestations. First thing you will notice is a huge drop in testosterone. You will find yourself loosing confidence in situations that you had formerly been able control thru sheer maleness. Women will no longer turn and check you out as you walk by. When you are gathered together with Gun Cranks and you mention that you once had, but traded a Model 29, they will all look at the ground, cough and scuff their feet trying to hide their embarassment for you. Your vision will get worse, stock up on reading glasses. It will be hard to keep from gaining weight, extra pounds will settle in the back of your pants. Other "Gun Guys" will start referring to you as "that boy who got rid of his 29". Instead of going on a solo archery interior Grizzly hunt you will find yourself planning a game farm axis deer hunt so you can get in some shopping with your trip. These are just a few of the sort of things that you bring on to yourself by letting a Model 29 out of your grasp. The Proud Recipient however, will notice as he grasps for the first time his new prize. There are more veins showing in his forearms, his countenance will be as a bird of prey. Stern, broad shouldered, sharp vision. There is more than a transfer of ownership that goes along with a Model 29, There is a transfer of POWER! It is rather like counting coup, but with visible results. While I am a big fan of the Wyoming school gun building and the extreme quality of their wares, I will remind you that John Linebaugh himself carries a Smith and Wesson for his daily carry gun. Remember this, if you ever want back your former standing after selling a Model 29, it can only be regained by acquiring an Model 25. Proceed with caution.

...in case you forget I told you the same thing...at minimum you could "replace" the 29 with a 629 Mountain Gun but one should NEVER be without a good S&W N-frame...not and still be able to call himself a man that is...

The 280gr. LBT's are a no go. The Keiths show lots of promise. I think I may need a taller front sight though.

Yep! Just a couple years ago I hear ya Keith. One of those Lil FAs might be fine for a Lady's purse gun but I sure wouldn't pack one out in the rough stuff. Darn .44 Special is liable to bounce back and take your eye out.

You're getting a .43O.....and a mould, and whatever the hell bullets you're ordering from NateWayUSA.
23 bucks for a steel front isn't bad, price one for a Redhawk.
P.S. You're shopping cart is empty.....

I will shoot it a bit before making the final decision but if I like it as much as I predict I will, I'll just sell some other stuff and make this my official go to.
Travis
That's a plan..... Here's mine....44 on the left, 357 on the right....THe 44 may be making the trip back for a bobbed barrel and roundbutting.... The 44 likes 5.6gr WW231 under the swaged Hornady 240 SWC and 15.0gr 2400 under the leadhead 255gr Keith bullet....

Are those 83's or 97's? Those octagon barrels are cool.

Those are 97s....
My friend in Texas ordered a gun just like your .44 Special but with an octagon barrel. It should be in about Thanksgiving. He had a second cylinder fitted that is going to be rechambered to .44 Magnum so he can use his 1000 fps lead reloads in case of emergency.. Mr. Baker said it would be fine but they would not factory cut the chamber in .44 Mag.

As RJM says, they are 97's....The octagon barrel is nice. The ultimate would be a 44 w/ 4-1/4" octagon barrel, roundbutt w/ ivory micarta....

...$813...plus shipping to and from....grips would be another $334.00....
So you would be into the gun for $3400....
Better to order a new one and sell this one when the 14 month wait is up...

...$813...plus shipping to and from....grips would be another $334.00....
So you would be into the gun for $3400....
Better to order a new one and sell this one when the 14 month wait is up...
Bob That's comparable to an octagon barrel, line bored 5-shot conversion on a Ruger, once you factor in the base gun.

This thing shoots like a mofo. I don't have time to wait for the new front sight so loaded up some 200gr. XTP's and 8.0gr's of True Blue. They shoot UBER to the 100.
I think I'll load up a couple hundred and slum jacketed bullets until the end of the season.

..order a new gun and save $600....total would be about $2850.00. Less than $50 a month if the wait is 14 months for a new one. I have read that FA's turn around time on alterations to existing guns is quite fast; one reason I'm searching for a 97 in 32 H&R rather than ordering one in 327: I can likely get a new cylinder fitted in far less time than I would spend waiting for a new gun.

Turn-around time is two-three weeks. I saw their gun vault when I was there a few weeks ago...tons of rack space and about 10 guns...
Mr. Baker told me that alterations get first priority as they don't want an existing customers gun in the shop any longer than necessary..so all go to the head of the line.

...there was a 7.5" .327 on GunBroker a few months ago...it sat there for about two weeks before someone bought it for $1900.00.

PURE AWESOME!!!! I am now convinced that Chuck Norris only took that name because DOWNSTREAM was taken!!!

454 be the bomb travis...gfy They're definitely the cheapest way into a FA I'll tell you that. Travis pretty good deal on a M83 in .44 mag, here - modest opening bid, and no reserve: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=449061935

It doesn't matter the cost, you got an immediate sale here. I am on the phone with a certain classifieds advisor, coaching me on this trade/purchase. Are you still interested in the Avalanche?

No. This is the part where I cash both money orders and keep the 29. Travis

Here's something to hold you over while you wait Travis. Grasshorn made the elk antler grips for mine, a .45 Colt. Just curious, what kind of wait time does the factory quote these days? My wife got one earlier this year and it took about 11 months. And BTW, if you're looking for a holster you probably can't do better than the factory holsters that FA offers. Good price, and they fit perfectly. I got one from El Paso Saddlery and it didn't fit very well, then ordered one from FA and it's great.

McCinnis, That's beauty. I should have been more clear in my posts, but this one was already built and sitting in a gun shop in SD. The guy that ordered got cold feet once it arrived so I was able to buy it for retail, minus what they had him put down on the order. He must be a long lost relative because aside from his not ordering the 3lb trigger job, this is exactly how I would have ordered it. Not sure how a trigger job adds an extra $100.00 to the price of a $2K revolver, but that's another matter... I have about 150 rounds through it now and it is shooting really well. It's amazing what can happen when you combine a shooter as great as I am, with a handgun as great as the 97. Here are some pics of it now that it's in my hands: For Leather I went with another holster from Norm. His Montana Shoulder Rig is simply a great design. As much as I love the EPS Tanker, I like Norm's holsters a little better. I think his pricing is fair and not to mention as long as he "has the gun by 10 in the morning, you'll have it back by 5 so you can head on back to Havre." He's a great guy to do business with. The crossdraw holsters on FA's website are tempting. But I rarely (very rarely) wear an OWB belt holster. I called Milt Sparks and they do have a mold for the 4 1/4" 97 so I will be ordering a Summer Special or Cruiser or whatever the fugg they call them next week. Travis

Travis, That is one hell of a nice rig, sir. I've held off posting pics of my new-to-me 1993 NIB case colored Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt because every time I look at your FA 97 I start droolin'... and that's not so good for my bank account.

I do believe you have planted the first seed of FA enablement on me with that 97 of yours. That is just plain knockout perfection. Here's a quick pic of my lowly new-to-me NIB unfired case colored 1993 Old Vaquero in 45 Colt. I've been diligently looking for her sister.

Yep, she's brandy spanking new.
Been looking hard to try and find a match for her. Every time I find one similar, there's something wrong. Shorter barrel, been beat up, or other stuff. Found one the other night that looked pretty good, but had a rust spot on the bottom right section of the frame.
I'll find a matching one eventually. In the meantime, I'm gonna shoot the hell out of this one!
