Want to put a Vari-X III 1.75-6x32mm E w German No.1 onto my .358 Frontier w/o going to High or Extra-High rings.

Took the four hex screws outta the fwd base but it won't come off. Looks like two blued steel studs also keep base on barrel.

The manual, of course, doesn't even want you to use a conventional scope on a Frontier, so it gives no clue.

Figured I'd check with Y'all before I break out a pry bar to see if any of you have successfully overhauled a Frontier for std scope with ocular bigger than 1-in. or so.

Check with the guys on the gunsmithing board. I recall being told once that the rib on number ones is torqued down super tight and is a pain to remove, but just screwed on. I would bet the frontier is similar.

You are going to have a bunch of holes to plug, but I guess that's ok. Filler screws or black shoe polish should work (unless it is stainless).

True. Trying to just use what's on hand to save some money. This is gonna be my backup/black timber carbine for an elk hunt next year.

Shoulda hung onto the .350 model 7 CDL that scope was on originally.

.................CC,,,,,,,I own a 300 WSM Ruger Frontier. Know what you are trying to do, but imo, it would be more trouble than what it would be worth in removing the forward scout mount.

And imo it wouldn't necessarily look all that great with the holes and studs exposed on the barrel top below the scope unless a smith fills them in and removes the studs for you. Then of course you'll lose the scout scope option. Also and for me anyway, the added weight of the scout mount makes the rifle balance better.

Right now I,ve got a 3x9x40 conventionally mounted scope using the high ring forward and a x-high at the rear. Though as I recall, my shooting buddy uses a low ring on the front and a medium ring on the rear on his 338 Fed Frontier using a 2-7x33 VX2.

There is a direct link to a Ruger Frontier article from gunblast.com going back to 2005 which I'll give to you in my next post. There you'll see a pic or two with a 2-7x33 VX2 mounted on it.

Imo, you should settle for that look rather than removing the forward scout mount and going through all of that trouble.

Here is the link......www.gunblast.com/Ruger_FrontierRifle.htm

I was off by 1 mm on the 2x7 VX11 objective. A 32 not a 33. No matter though.

Nothing wrong with that look in the Quinn pic with the scout mount on the barrel.

Thinking I'm gonna get a higher set of Target Grey 30mm rings and drop a VX3 1.5-5x IR on it. Really wanted to use that German No. 1 setup but don't wanna tear all that stuff off

Hell, I may finally trim the old 760 '06 back to 19-20 in. and stuff it w 200- or 220-gr. NPTs and put the No. 1 reticle on it for snap-shooting rig...
