I had my first real trip to Texas this year, southern Texas and was immediately impressed-almost smitten with- exactly what birdy describes. NICE people...all colors, openly friendly to one another, cordial , soft spoken etc. When I tried a word here and there of my pidgin spanish, they seemed to appreciate the effort, rather than make sport of it ( which Mexican Mexicans have done in the past).
As mentioned, many are third and fourth or more generations removed from Mexico. Didn't seem right to refer to them as Mexican...it would be like calling me Irish.Im not, Im an American, and so were they.
All tolled, I found the people to be extremely pleasant. Nice experience. You should move there. Just be sure your neighbors aren't "Mexican-Mexican." Them fuggers are awful. Travis

Never heard that one, the phrase that begins with "chupa" is way more common. OTOH that other phrase you wrote might come in useful if'n I ever cross over the river w/a shotgun shell in the trunk

I know. It's tough to find spanish speaking Mexicans in south Texas. Especially San Antonio. La frase que utilic� fue La mayor�a de los hispanos en el sur de Texas no parecen ser espa�ol no todos ellos no hablan que. Dont believe me? Check out what grades they got in Spanish I every six weeks when the report cards go out

There's been Hispanics from all over South America working the central Kentucky horse farms for years. Of course, we've had quite an influx of illegals from Mexico, too.
One incident happened recently that I thought was a bit funny.
A black guy had robbed a Hispanic guy and shot him in the leg,...nothing funny about that, but he was at the hospital being taken care of. My wife was attending to him when the police showed up and asked him about it. He said,
"A black man came up to me with a gun and said, 'give me your money, Mexican!', then he shot me in my leg,..and I'm from Guatemala!"

As an aside, the term "hispanic" is a bit too broad in my opinion. Big difference between a Mexican neighborhood and a block of El Sals.
Same with "Asian." Filipinos can be slightly less cordial than your average Japanese-American.

-- in the late sixties, early 70's, in the Marines - same thing as what is reported -- the Mexicans, Hispanics, Asians -- basically all groups not from a linage from Africa didn't get along with the Africans because the Africans were an abused people and everyone owed them homage for the things that happened to the slaves in the 1700's through the middle 1800's. The same thing could be said about the Sioux Indians here in South Dakota who are almost all living on welfare. Their ancesters were killed in wars and so they are owed money, food, housing, and booze. BTW, They vote for the slime bags like are in the executive office also.
