Bump for Army Mark's nice flock of Single shot's!!!
Love the last one, just shows you that the .45-70 Govt. is good medicine for a lot of North American game.
Very nice!!!!
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

Doe no. 2, was too dark to get a pic of the first... The way our seasons have changed, no reason to still be shooting the cannon, but I just LIKE it Have got down to my last 7 235 Speers, ordered another box just now. Who knows, may hunt it all season.

I paid $525 for a new Uberti 1885 high wall 30-30 in 2005. I never shot it. But in 2012 I pulled the barrel and put on a Shilen stainless select match #3 taper barrel in 257 Roberts Ackley Improved Rimmed. I designed a part that clamps to the barrel and acts as a scope mount and a mount for a tube that is the mount for the forearm and the bi pod. The Atlas bipod clamps onto a Weaver like rail on the bottom. I might redo this with a tube around the barrel ala AR15 floating handguards. I shot a couple deer at 400 yards with this.

Here's a pick of my poor boys Winchester in 260 Light, (aka 243). The wood isn't up to the Brownings, but it's not bad for a Win.

That's actually the prettiest of the late model Winchesters that I recall seeing No flies on the .243 either! Have you scoped her yet?

Thanks Blacktail.
I put a Gloss VXII 3-9x40 on her.
I tried some 95gr NBT handloads I had worked up for my old Browning BLR, but they were only so-so.
Picked up some Barnes 85gr TSX off the Campfire Classifieds and have one load showing promise, but development has been temporarily postponed due to deer season.

Earlier this year there were quite a few Brownings and Winchesters on GB and GA, but they seem to have dried up. I wanted a LW Hunter in the worst way, but finally gave up and bought some other stuff instead.
Guess I should just be glad for the Hornet I lucked into in 2000.

Winchester 1885 Short Hunter (22") .405 Winchester It's a wee bit big for bobcats but it worked in a pinch...

Those are very tempting as well. I kinda leaned toward the .38-55, but the .405 is a good idea since you can use the .41 mag slugs.
I would want the shotgun butt, though. I had a B78 .45-70 years ago, and my shoulder still hurts.

Yes the shotgun butt is highly recommended. I bought this for the aesthetics. I am, in no way, recoil sensitive. However, after about 10 rounds off the bench with this gun I develop two little green bruises where the points of the crescent butt meet my shoulder. No issues with recoil in the field, however. It is a hammer on game.
