Looking for some opinions on these. Thinking about putting one on my winchester extreme weather.

Anyone have any experience with one of these and the vx-3 3.5-10x40? Is the VX-6 that much better? also, how do they compare in size?

I've got both if you can live with a 30mm scope go with the VX 6 I love mine !

I run the VX3 3.5 on almost all my hunting rifles and have never felt I needed more. Was out this morning, got to the blind an hour before the sun came up. I could see deer a few hundred yards in front of me and that's good enough for me

I currently hunt with both of those exact scopes. FWIW:
VX6 has better glass (superb glass BTW)
VX6 has the best duplex reticle made/perfect thickness, stays black
VX6 (if you're into CDS) has 20 MOA per turn, VX3 has 15
VX6 has the most user friendly eyebox of any scope I've ever used
especially at higher mags
VX3 is the perfect size, obviously smaller profile than VX6
VX3 has great glass, just not quite as good as VX6
VX3 power ring is easier to adjust than VX6 (a bit stiff)

Quite a few differences between the two, the VX-6 is twice the price of the VX-3. the VX-6 is a 30mm scope the VX-3 is a 1" scope. the VX-6 has the same eye relief at 2x as it does at 12x the VX-3 changes eye relief more than 3/4" from hi to low power.

If you look through both the VX-6 has better glass, comes down to your budget. if you can afford it the VX-6 is a better scope in every way (except weight, being a 30mm it weighs about 4oz more)

I just noticed on leupold's website they actually have the VX-6 listed at 12.5" in length while the VX-3 is 12.6".

I know it's a negligible difference but I expected the VX-6 to be quite a bit bigger than the VX-3.

If you got the $$$. Go with VX 6.

Buy a good used Schmidt Bender, I think they are superior to even the VX6, the downside is the weight. Most 30mm scopes are heavy, but if tree stand hunting who cares?

This is not intended or directed at you Sako, but I used to buy and drink that koolaid myself, so much in fact, that I bought a S&B Summit with plex reticle. I've also had the luxury of guiding loads of hunters over the past 12 years, several of whom had some sort of S&B besides the summit. My take is they have superb build quality and glass....as good as it gets. The duplex reticle's suck, so much in fact that my then 50 yr old eyes "lost" the reticle at dark thirty, especially with a brushy background. I also did not find them to be the most user friendly scope around. I liked my VX3 much more than the summit in that area as well as in regards to the reticle. They real deal killer for me was having them side by side with Big Al's Leupold VX-II, at dusk-thirty, while our hunter was going to shoot a 185" muley buck. I could have just as easily killed that buck with the Leupy as the S&B.

S&B's are world class stuff for sure, but pricing is beyond ridiculous, they're relatively heavy, they can malfunction like anything else, and for everyday hunting I deem them no better than lots of other scopes at 1/2 the $$ or much less money. I find the VX3 and VX6 to be fantastic hunting scopes. I guess when they start breaking I will feel differently. That hasn't happened yet though. I still abide by the "to each his own" idea.

Just got off the phone with my dealer, he quoted me $790 for the VX-6.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me though I guess I should have gotten a price for the VX-3 while I had him on the phone....

Yeah, that'a a good VX-6 price and below MRSP. Your dealer could get into fair trade problems with Leupold if he advertised that price.

For comparison, last month I picked up a VX3 3.5-10x40 for $437 to my front door from OpticsPlanet.com.

The VX-6 is worth the spread, IMO. And, I got'em both.

The VX-3 3.5-10x40 is my pick of the VX-3 litter, especially with a CDS. But, it's just not in the same class as the VX-6.

I'd go VX-3 with a LW, compact rifle, otherwise, I'd go VX-6.

For compact rifles, check out the new VX-2 series. They're pretty close to the VX-3, much improved over the old VX-II/Vari-X-II. With the VX-2, I'd go 3-9 on a LA rifles, 2-7 on a SA rifle for technical mounting reasons. And I'd get a CDS on either one. The CDS is the best elevation turret deal on the market, IMO.

Yes, it would work well.

That gun is lighter than my 7RM MkV/Brux, probably closer to JG's 7RM Tikka.

With compact, LW rifles, I'm thinking slim, 6# rifles that to me would be better served with a VX-3 or even a VX-2.

I just mounted a VX-2 3-9x40 on a friends SS Extreme Weather M-70, using Leupold mounts. It looked good. That new M-70 is super slick. FN is doing a great job with those. I even liked the new trigger.

But, the gun is big enough to work with a VX-6, 2-12. IIRC that M-70 weighs around 7#'s.

VX-6's start getting heavy with the 3-18/adjustable parallax. The 2-12 isn't that bad and is pretty sleek for a 30 mm scope.

Added to say I'd probably go with LW Talley one piece rings with the M-70/VX-6 combo, like I did with my MkV. They look good and do save weight.
