Finishing the fitting of a butt stock on "the Project" before heading up the road.

Loaded up a bunch of .30-30 and .300 ammo last night and heading to the range today.

I want to see how well the replacement front sight works on the .30-30, Along with finding out if the .300 likes the 165 gr. NBT's that were given to me.

Well...It's a bubba. But I got it anyways. I think it will be a fine shooter and I will not worry about hunting hard with it.

Serial 6930xx with a stamp like this: E)

Bad:
1.) Drilled and tapped through "Savage 99"
2.) Looks like the bolt was partially open when drilling the rear ring and the bit hit the top of the bolt. causing a small mark.
3.) Sling swivels added
4.) Butt stock has a repaired crack and does not match the gun by markings. The forend does.
5.) Rear sight is a dovetail flip down (not correct?).
6.) Case hardening is all but gone.

Good:
1.) I traded a gun for it that I got for $300.
2.) Bluing is about 90% I'd say. No rust spots or pitting.
3.) Wood overall is pretty nice.
4.) Crown, bore, rifling seem great.

I probably won't do anything with it besides shoot it. I assume it's and EG, but since the stock is not original, could it have been something else? 24" barrel.

Thanks,
Matt

At that serial number it could have only been an 99EG or a 99R, only two models that were made right then. For $300 total, I don't see how you could have gone wrong.

Yep, can't complain. I think it was a great ice breaker to get me into 99's!

Putting together a display case for my dad's 75th Anniversary 1895(99)...he's pretty happy with the rifle and I think the case will make a great Christmas gift.

I put my 1899 cutaway action back together. Fixed the rotary magazine on a pre-mil 99F 300 that I had gotten real cheap at a gun show because it wouldn't feed and stripped down a pre-mil 99f 308 to have the barrel shortened. See pics below. My wife rushed me off to candle light service before I could finish this.
Would you guys believe this is my first White Christmas?

While searching for 99's on the web I ran across a S&W pre K22 mfg 1952. 6" barrel in excellet condition. Made arrangements to pick it up later this week. Not Savage but will put a smile on my face. Still looking for a CD. GW

I had some Savage projects that needed attention yesterday.

110 22-250 trigger and safety weren't interacting right. 99C 22-250 safety wasn't engaging. 99DL 308 stock cracked by the shipping gorillas. Had both 22-250's apart about 20 times each, trial and error. Adjust, check, adjust, check, adjust, check. Finally got both working perfectly, but the bonus is I now know each gun intimately.
Epoxied the DL stock.

All in all, it was way more satisfying than taking them to a gunsmith for repair, and then never knowing what was wrong. The 99 is not a complicated machine and I won't hesitate to work on minor things again. The 110 was a bear, but had help from a gunsmith on the forum here and he got me lined out.
*Beware- There's a spring on the 110 trigger that likes to soar across the room unless you see it beforehand.

Still refinishing wood on both 22-250's, and minor repair on the DL, missing or broken spring.
