Ya never know, some guys call them used if they've ever been taken out of the box. I would not be afraid of any black pad #1, if I liked the caliber. Define your degree of woodslut-itis The only plain #1 I have was Dad's rifle - and it shoots very well. 7x57's are fairly common, and if it was me I'd hold out for one with better wood. I have seen NO Boddingtons that I thought had excellent wood. I have seen a couple of .450 Nitros that were decent, with some mineral streaks, but none even close to my .30-40. That said For me I'd probably go for the .250 Savage, as that should be a nice Texas deer rifle, and fairly rare. You may never see one with better wood than that one.
