I can't explain it, but I'd love to have one of the 1-A's in 30 WCF.

Also been peeking at one of the lipsey's 45-70 with circassian wood and a 26 inch barrel. Neat looking setup there too.

Other options are1A in .257 Roberts or 6.5x55 but don't have pictures of wood on those yet

This one has nice wood. I've been tempted on it, myself.

Patrick that one is used but say he doesn't think it's been shot
Seems with that scope mounted it would have been fired?

also, a couple of other resources - one would be Member ElNumeroUno's site. He has a number of rare variations for sale, here:

Ya never know, some guys call them used if they've ever been taken out of the box. I would not be afraid of any black pad #1, if I liked the caliber. It will have one of Ruger's hammer-forged barrels, and they usually shoot very well.

7 x 57 has very nice wood if that's what your looking for.
Would wait to see the 6.5 x 55. It's a neat cartridge.

Define your degree of woodslut-itis grin The only plain #1 I have was Dad's rifle - and it shoots very well.

7x57's are fairly common, and if it was me I'd hold out for one with better wood.

I have seen NO Boddingtons that I thought had excellent wood. I have seen a couple of .450 Nitros that were decent, with some mineral streaks, but none even close to my .30-40.

That said For me I'd probably go for the .250 Savage, as that should be a nice Texas deer rifle, and fairly rare. You may never see one with better wood than that one. But - splitting hairs - I'd like a 7x57 better for big-bodied deer, black bear, elk, and moose. YMMV All of them should shoot well for you. smile

My hunch is, it's harder to get them to shoot well. But I've never owned one, so take that with a grain of salt.

I've got rifles that shoot "well" out to a hundred yards. I still like them. grin

Right? I'm still liking the Boddington 7x57 but I'm awaiting pictures on the 6.5x55 he has 7 of them and is going to cherry pick the best and send me a picture tonight

This one is on GI:

this one is a little more horsepower, but has about the best wood I have seen on a Boddington
