Ok gents here are the details.Due to issues we have a new venue for this years hunt. We are moving south to Texas and hunting wild feral hogs so no walking up on a pet pig here. The ranch is located in Crystal City TX. which is about 2 hours south of San Antonio in the brush country. The ranch is the ADL 7 ranch. It is approx. 1500 acres and a mix of high and low fence but all the hogs are wild feral hogs, not stocked porkers. This will be a real hunt consisting of hunting from stands and blinds, also they can take smaller groups out at night to hunt for hogs and predators. Due to the size of our group and these not being farm pigs we won't be able to stalk(hard to do that with real wild hogs any how) Dates are as follows
Arrive Wed. afternoon March 18th Hunt Thursday,Friday and Saturday Depart Sunday A.M. March 22nd
Included are 3 hogs per hunter, free varmint and predators, 3 meals per day supplied and cooked for us. Use of skeet range, archery range and fishing in the tanks(ponds to us yankees)
Total cost for every thing above is $750 per hunter
A 50% deposit is required and I need all deposits before the end of January and then I will forward them on to the ranch per his request.
Balance to be paid at the ranch either, cash, check or credit card.
As usual we will stress safety 1st...a group that normally came here every year was not invited back due to unsafe firearms practices. I know our group and that this isn't an issue but just wanted to reiterate the point. I was able to work with the owner and get this discounted $150 off of his normal charge for a 4 night 3 day hunt. The accommodations are swanky and we won't be missing out on anything that Wilderness had, actually ADL 7 offers far more!
I know it's short notice but we need firm commitments please PM me if you are going to attend and I will give you my address so you can send me your deposit. Again we will give 1st preference to past attendees and we will be capped at 30 hunters.
Here is a link to the ranch, browse through and I think we are going to be quite pleased. Also I am attaching a video so you can see There are numerous exotics and they may also be hunted at an added cost which I believe you can find on the web sight
I'm checking my schedule for this one. If I can make it I'll be happy to come through San Antone and pick up guys at the airport and shuttle them on down if need be. I haven't made a hunt yet, so I'll prob be on the B team.
Or if some guys want to fly into Midland they can make the 6 hour trek with me from there.
You guys don't know how badly I would like to join you! Unfortunately I was laid off a month or so ago and have the time, but shouldn't be spending the money.
All future get-togethers are on my radars, and I hope to get to meet as many Campfire members as possible.

I hope you all have a blast!
You won't be dissapointed.
You're one to talk. Get a flight to Houston (or San Antonio) and I'll pick you up.
My Kidney Transplant will probably run all over these hunt dates, DAMN! But that is about the only thing that I would allow to keep me away.
Looks like a great time for all. If I can make it I will. Not looking good, but just to be sure I will call U of W tomorrow and see if we are closer to getting an actual transplant surgery date yet.
Dan, Thanks for all the work getting this together.Let me know where to send the deposit.Let us know when the B list starts, I may have someone else interested. Joe
Thanks Poob's! Bob said you can hitch a ride from San Antonio with us to the ranch
Thanks Dan, I'll get back to you guys on the ride, another member stepped up to offer taxi service too! I might have to go one way in one car and the way back in another!
Does the ranch arrange daily transportation of the hog carcasses to Uvalde? Will we be able to pick the processed meat up on Sunday in Uvalde? Or will we have to wait around until Monday, particularly if a pig shot on Saturday?
Does the ranch have a cooler/freezer (as at 700 Springs in 2010), so that a hog might be quartered on site, then iced down and hauled away in a larger cooling chest?
It's obvious I don't know the usual drill. Thanks. --Bob
Guys also we will need 5 day Tx hunting license as this is a real hunt and not a game farm I believe the fee is $48 and I believe we can get them at the ranch but I will verify that Also gratuity for cook staff and maids along with your guide Also any alcohol you may want Everything else is included
Also remember folks that it's 3 hogs on the menu plus evening hunts for pigs and varmints.
Plus, the Mexican border is nearby for those who miss their boar and want to take it out on the cartels after downing a handful of 25 cent shots of tequila.
For another 75 cents, we could even get Tom laid. Well, maybe a buck twenty five extra.

Looks like a heck of a deal to me. We need to get ed "too many letters" on board for this.
Thankee kindly. I am not orgasmic about flying. Albany Airport gives me a HUGE PITA clearing my artillery. Cost is a mite higher than I expected (spoiled by previous pig hunts).
Dan, I had booked a trip to Italy with my daughter 3/16-3/31, but it looks like it will have to be cancelled for various reasons, so I'm probably going to be coming. I have to confirm with the travel agency that I can get my full refund on the airfares, then I'll be able to come. I'll know in a day or three.
Looking at relocating/jobs right now so not able to commit. Certainly, if things "clarify" themselves, will be in touch.
Hate to miss Tide's demonstration of how safe the Glock is during a take-down or Bob generously providing those delicious burgers... then not able to eat any of them because we mixed the blue cheese with the not-blue cheese burgers while grilling in the dark and he's deathly allergic to blue cheese. Seriously, who knew?!?
Ok here is the scoop about meat care of hogs. Yes they have a large walk in cooler and will skin and quarter the hog thats included If you want a full butcher job they will transport to Uvalde Butcher cost is $89 but unless you kill on 1st day or 2nd morning it won't be butchered in time to travel back with. The ranch will transport your hog or hogs to the butcher for you. The butcher does ship and has a list of charges to FedEx with dry ice packing,it isn't cheap. A list is on the web sight http://www.uvaldemeatprocessing.com/ Also if you chose not to keep your meat and no one from our group wants to take it,they will donate it to Hunters for the Hungry but there is a $30 fee the butcher charges to cut and distribute it. That can be paid right at the ranch.
There is spotty cell service,ATT works best, Verizon is iffy as we know in that area of TX They have WiFi at the lodge it's not the fastest but it works.
The tip for cook and kitchen staff is $60 per hunter, the owner had to do this because many didn't tip them at all, that will be collected upon check out. Amount of Tip to your guide is at your discretion
Hey guys, I wanted to introduce myself. I'm new here and am a friend of Roof. He asked me if I wanted to go and jumped at the chance. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

It's tradition for the new guy to bring a gift for everyone It could be as simple as a new Ceasar Gurini shotgun or Swarovski binoculars, you know just some thing small like that as a gesture of your friendship
Dan- Thanks for following up on the handling of the post-mortem pork. I'm glad I asked. Assuming I get any pigs, I'll plan to ice down the quarters in a cooler and beat feet northbound. --Bob

How much should I expect to tip?
All tips are just that, a tip, and should only be left if you are completely satisfied with the service our staff performed for you. The suggested tip for your guide is 20% of your hunt, but again this is totally up to you. We prefer for hunters to tip their guide directly. The tip for the staff (kitchen, hostesses and housekeeping) of $60 per hunter will be collected in the office at check out time. If you have any suggestions, compliments or complaints, please do so at check out time, as we are always seeking suggestions for improvements to our operation!
What should I bring?
We have a skeet range and provide clay targets, so you can bring your shot gun. We also have a shooting range. We have ponds stocked with catfish (catch/release program) and provide limited fishing gear, but you are welcome to bring your own. Do not forget a jacket, hunting weapon, ammo, binoculars, eye protection, ear protection, insect repellent & sunscreen. If you are a bow or pistol hunter please bring cover up scent to eliminate any odor for close range encounters.
What to expect on my hunt?
Hog hunts are 1-guide to 4- hunters and are performed from blinds (ground and elevated) overlooking feeders with some having LED night lights. Your guide will drop you off at your blind and pick you back up twice a day, morning & evening. The average shooting distance is 100 to 150 yards. The hogs we hunt range anywhere from 30 to 300 pounds, however the average hog harvested weighs between 100 to 150 pounds. Our hog hunts allow you to harvest up to 3 hogs up to 150 lbs each. Additional hogs up to 150 lbs can be taken at an additional $100 each. Trophy hogs 151 lbs to 199 lbs are an additional $200 each. Trophy hogs 200 lbs plus are an additional $300 each. We suggest using a .243 rifle or larger with some sort of illuminated cross hair because most of the hogs are harvested in low light conditions.
Exotic hunters will have guides with them while hunting to help identify species and to aid in judging trophy quality of your desired species.
We offer Rifle, Crossbow, bow, muzzle loader and hand gun hunts. All hunters will be required to shoot their weapons at our range before the hunt can begin. Please let us know if you are an archer or pistol hunter so we can have our bow blinds ready for you at least two weeks in advance of your hunt.
What should I wear?
We recommend camouflage. You should wear snake leggings during the spring and summer because though there is very little walking this is a good precaution when stalking or tracking.
Please check our weather link which is located on the home page of our website to help you with what type of clothing to bring.
Registration:
Once dates are reserved and confirmed through e-mail, please use the registration located at on our website. Make sure everyone in your group registers. The group name should be the name of the person who purchased the hunt and/or made the reservations. It is also important to enter the correct date of arrival.
How can I pay for my Invoice at check out time?
You can pay in the office. We accept cash, debit card, cashiers check, company check, personal check and travelers check, American Express, Discover, Visa and Master Card. Please note: There is a 5% Administrative fee on all transactions.

I have had two axis deer done by Uvalde meats and they may be the best game butcher I've ever used. Great vacuum pack and cut and packaged just like I asked.
well, time to move the VX-R scope to either the 6.8, or the AR-10, if I decide to night hunt for the pigs. 1 or 2 pigs is plenty for me, but what I would like a boar with good cutters for a Euro mount.
I will add to the above Facts sheet that I have negotiate with the owner you are permitted any size hogs there is no extra for larger pigs Keep in mind these are wild feral pigs and if you are looking for a trophy a big large tooth boar it's great, but it will eat like crap and be good for just sausage
Are they hard set on the .243 or larger I was gonna do some stunt shooting. And what kinda Iron is everyone bringing? Might bring a scatter gun for the skeet range anyone else?
I think if you know your abilities and weapon you can bring what you like We all know a .223 with a good bullet placed right kills a hog dead I will verify that to be sure but I'm fairly certain it will be fine

I'm thinking about dusting off the old sendero 7mm stw and Ar-15 for some yotes
On the subject of ride sharing, I may have 1 to 3 seats available for anyone who would be heading down through Indy/Cincy/Louisville. We'd be leaving 3/17.
Im gonna bring my Faux Ti .223 my old .250/3000 99eg and Probably a Tikka 25-06. Like to have all my bases covered. I will be driving down from the KC area. Just myself at this time. So let me know if anyone needs a ride or picked up along the way. Not sure what rig Im driving yet.
Assuming the weather allows all gear to go in the truck bed, I will have room for two (assuming ingwe tags along as PM'd) from the San Antonio airport as I live about 30 minutes from it.
I've had to lay off the award winning taste of PBR. As delicious as it is, I'm back to wearing a gunbelt these days, and they ain't exactly made out of elastic......

5 days of tasty pbr ain't going to effect that gunbelt.....peer pressure. Hahaha

I was planning on the 223AI and I might missed something, but I saw no caliber restrictions on their website...
Somebody please educate me...
( on this topic only...I know that might be taken as an open-ended request)
I think that y'all need to bring some Off. Chiggers will be out and looking for blood. The higher the level of DEET the better. Ask Bob about getting into the Chiggers,he's not a fan of the little bastards.

Had them many times. Always wear a shirt tucked in its seems to keep them off the boys.

I'm taking a .223 along, and maybe won't use it on a hog, but I'm going to call the ranch before the hunt just to talk to them about it and make sure the head guide is comfortable.

On the FAQ page but it does say suggest.
Thanks for that...I only read it three times before I saw the suggestion...I appreciate it, but Dan was right, Im the Poobah...I'll bring a BB gun....and something Bart mentioned was 'OFF'...Ill be bring that and a Thermacell methinks.
Whats the weather like down there in March. No winter clothes I expect.
It will be between 38* and 87* and it might rain.
Sounds about right. Last time I went hog hunting to escape the snow and cold it snowed on us in Oklahoma so I figure we will get a freak blizzard in South Texas when I am there.
I was planning to bring plenty of Becky Hopefully I won't drop a bottle this year.
Scratching my head a bit on rifles. I had been planning to stalk pigs with the 1920 Savage, but if you can only hunt from blinds, mostly near dark that could be problematic. Ditto the Sharps.
I have two illuminated scopes in QD mounts for picatinny rails. I have a 6.8 and an AR-10, so they may get much of the work.
buzzworm boots and ear plugs are probably a good thing to bring...
I wanted to hunt with my bow but after all the shooting start they will be squirrely. Really don't care if I kill a hog as long as I get my picture taken with Popeye the trip will be a success

I suppose it is time for the disclaimer.
Feral hogs are smart. You cannot fool their nose and they don't return to the same area for days after they've been spooked. They are nocturnal by nature and when they move...they move.
Dan...finding RT prices to S.A. at around 325.00, a good price.
I'll book Contessa and the vehicle soon. I have them both on price alerts now. I just need to find us a vehicle where you don't have to blow into things to start the engine.
If you had a man card, you'd be required to turn it in now.
Since you don't, your probationary period for reapplying for one will now be extended by another 5 years. You may reapply for a man card on May 14, 2217.

Dooood! My sister had a Prius. I borrowed it once.
It had a latte cup holder.
It was skookum.
Fortunately, Bob will be able to reapply for a man card four years before the Poobs. The Prius borrowing, and referencing a latte would generally lead to a permanent ban. However, since Poobs had his original man card revoked by Lazarus, the permanent ban was not then in place and since he's never had one reissued, the old rules still apply.

That's already been factored in, and why his reissue date is 2221 and not 2521.
I dunno about man-cards & lattes & stuff... I just know that by end of March I'll be ready for a 4-day hiatus from squirin' The Redhead around...
I have NO idea what rifle(s) I'm a gonna bring... prolly the 375 Ruger African and the Quigley 45-110, as I've heard that 270 bullets just bounce off them South Texas pigs...

If we see half the exotics there that they show in their brochure, I may do more shooting with the camera than anything else
One of these days I really oughta get a 600mm F4
that would be fun.....saw both Pere David's and Barasingha in the pics....always wanted to see those critter up close along with bongo....*THINK* i saw a small Eld's deer aswell bout as rare as any species that can be hunted...
Ok just got off the phone with the owner and yes a vast majority of the exotics on the list are there.
As for the caliber minimum you are free to use a .223 etc. if you like. Again these are wild pigs and if not hit right will run off in to the thick TX brush and it will count as a kill. The owner suggests an ear shot but you guys know with a quality bullet placed right you will have pork.
Anyone going to hunt with one of the Lyman Mini Sharps in 38-55 . Just one beautiful single shot rifle.
A lightweight single shot in .38-55 would be cool, but that execution is not the best. I think they just directly scaled down the 1874 action. The triggers are rather awkward, and the triggerguard is too small, at least for me. Dakota also builds one, but they use a single trigger. And they cost a lot more.
One guy on the single shot forum was trying to sell a modern Low Wall in 6.5x55, and that one would be a slick rifle. It may still be available.
I am thinking my old tang M77 250 AI w/ 100 gr TSX's and my Browning M71 Carbine with the 220 gr Barnes Original. Or maybe a 7 or 8 x57???
You bring the tang safety .250 I might talk you out of it.
I put it together for son #1 almost 15 years ago who, over time, has become less of a hunter so I thought I should start banging away with it. Cheap build but darn accurate.
Anyone going to hunt with one of the Lyman Mini Sharps in 38-55 . Just one beautiful single shot rifle.
I have been eyeballing those since they came out. Might have to get one as my fourth retirement gift to me. Seriously, I will sell off a pile upon retiring and really want one as well as a full size one. Have you shot one?
Let the abuse begin.........I'm going to ask for a pass this year.
I had everything relatively set where work is concerned. The promotion has added some challenges from a scheduling perspective and I'm likely losing my boss this year. All that is irrelevant as that weekend was already booked with Connor for a camping trip to Battleship Cove. I hate missing a CF hunt, but the boy is the priority. I miss enough schit as it is......
I debated that......and am thinking next year would be about right. This is a group trip, all his friends, etc. He'll be 10 next year and, I think, ready for what our group has to offer.
There are pics that prove otherwise. Ask Bob. Grin.
You're mistaken... That was Pat and his famous nekked 4 wheeler get away... From what I can gather from the witnesses,he was doing about 50mph with his ass up in the air and his boys swinging in the wind. There's a video of it somewhere.

No , but i have been thinking seriously about getting one

Dan my check is in the mail as of whatever day I said I would send it. Mail from here to you may take 5 days or so. Let me know when you get it please.
Bobby, why don'tcha tell the new boss you'll be taking 3 days of diversity training? That's all the rage in workplaces, these days, and they'd never find anyone more committed to diversity and inclusion than this group.
Dan, my check is in the mail and Stone Cutter and I have our plane tickets. We will be arriving in San Antonio at 11:16 AM if anyone wants to share a rent a car. Joe

I handled one of the Dakota lil'Sharps at their DSC booth today. Spendy little gun but holy smokes it was sweet. They will make them in rimmed cartridges only, up to .444 Marlin caliber. The show gun was a .30-40, and they say .38-55 is very popular.
Sean and Jeff (RWE) are trying to F*** with me by saying they went back to my farm property this morning, in the pouring rain, and shot a bobcat from my favorite tree stand spot.
They're on the road to Hell for text taunting my generous kindness.
Who does this to a man making M&M pancakes for his granddaughter?
Bob, I live in Texas, never shot one, never seen one. Have seen dead ones others have shot. Just have to be lucky, a good caller and in the correct spot at the right time. Just tell the head guide what you want and maybe they can get you to the right place to hunt one. All is not lost, you are young and have many years to go.
On a serious note, I would recommend hunters bring the gun that they shoot best in the dark. Most of the pigs will be spotted within an hour of sunrise/sunset...before or after.
and the 19th through 21st is a new moon, so it will be plenty dark.
If someone needs/wants to borrow one, I can bring three extra AR's over .243 caliber - a 6.8, .300 Blackout, and a .308, plus scopes with illuminated reticles. I'll have to search around for green kill flashlights, which can mount on the forend rails.

Illuminated reticles? Game lights? Do you recommend these? The ranch recommends the former.
I don't have any illum . reticles, but Im bringing a kill light.
What kind?
Crap, you would have to ask that...I just packed it for another hunt...but its a high lumen # smallish hand held uber flashlight...green, for hogs, given to me by a member here...you could easily shoot a target at 200 yards with it.
There's plenty of green hog lights on Feebay and other places. Supposedly the hot ticket is a rheostat, so you gradually turn up the brightness and avoid spooking them. Of course, the only lights I've seen that have them are too damn expensive.
Come to think of it, I do have two Loopy prismatics, which also have illuminated reticles. Only 1x mag, however.
By the way, lions are a non-game animal in Texas, legal anytime. I can't imagine one being dumb enough to wander onto a ranch like this but ya never know

Yes you have a M1A1 Socom 7.62x51mm outfitted with a Gen 3 Armasight Vulcan 3.5-7 power.
Hogs can't see green light. It doesn't matter how bright. Heavy reticles are a plus. White is okay as long as you don't turn it on until it's time to shoot. Typically, they race from one food source to another as soon as it gets dark enough for them to feel comfortable. Overcast days and rain make them move all day. Feral hogs are wild animals, but they have a couple of weak points:
They make a lot of noise themselves, so you can get away with making some.
They are creatures of habit, using the same areas at approximately the same time every day, unless disturbed.
And last, but not least, they are hogs...they like to eat. Corn is your friend.
Don't be fooled though. Wild hogs are way smarter than any deer, just not as unpredictable.
Guys don't get all hung up on lights and night vision. This is mainly a day time deal and the night time opportunities will come off the high rack driving and spot lighting which they will have the light on the high rack. Again they can take only a few out at night and with our group size that will probably mean you will get to go out at night in the high rack once.
Ya them trucks will have a hand held light looking for eyes. I have owned my little light for several years, so not bought just for this trip. Hope they leave us out until dark for sure. I think this group of guides will cater to us as we need. Just have to ask.
Gordon Im sure they will.We will hunt till its to0 dark to see and be out in the A.M. in the dark before 1st light Here is what they say about the hunt
I can see I'm going to burn thru my retirement cash real quick on this hunt. My wife will be pissed. After looking at the prices of lights, I think my good flashlight and some duct tape will do.

I just happened to have one as I used to lay out in fields and watch for hogs. The light helps. Us, your going to be in a blind and will be picked up not too long after it gets dark. Wouldn't worry about a hog light or night vision.
They will not pay any attention at all to green light. As Dan stated, I wouldn't worry as much about illumination as optics that are good in low light. Open sights will definately put a man behind.
This sounds like it's shaping up to be an absolutely miserable adventure. I'm sorry to report that you guys will need to have too much fun this year without me. Fortunately no health issues are involved, just scheduling and distance. Enjoy yourselves boys. Regards, Bill
P.S. Does anybody have any .32 Remington ammo gathering dust? PM me if you do. TIA
Because of the thick brush, and depending upon blind locations, seems to me one could call predators from their hunting blind, if they wished to do so.
I had that same thought as well. Mine has a walnut stock, too...
So does mine, 270 Winchester, an American Classic.
yeah, it's funny. I keep having to screw around tuning & tinkering on "modern" rifles with synthetic stocks & chit. The .270 #1 puts 3 in 5/8" with the 2nd load I tried. The .475 Turnbull puts 3 in 9/16" with the first handload I try. And both of them look nice
Back to a more serious note, how many people are looking at or have an illuminated scope they're planning on using (as recommended) and how important is one to being successful on this type of hunt?
Only thing I've got illuminated is a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 that sits on a HB .308 that I really wasn't planning on using... Only other thing I've got 30mm rings for is a Mtn. Guide 7mm-08 and the scope would be damn near as big as it.
I was actually thinking of bringing a few guns that normally don't see much daylight.

I have a couple of VX-R's that have the illum. Firedot, so I'll bring them. I'll probably move the 3x9 from a 5.56 to the .308 AR. And I may bring a 6.8 AR with a 1.5-4 VX-R, as well, depending on how it shoots.
I'm thinking about either a VX-6 or a Nightforce for an aoudad hunt in October, so I may get it early & bring it.
I'll probably get a green kill light, too. We have pigs on my deer lease and they are fairly spooky, so the night hunting gear would get more use.

I'm prolly gonna bring my M4 with the Burris 1-4X illuminated reticle just for low light shooting, and a 270 of some sort. I know, I know, the 270 bullets will just bounce off...
Just for arguments sake if a .243 and a .223 are cool why wouldn't a .270 be? Myself I've never even fired a .270
The .270 is un-cool simply by virtue of the fact you and I have never even fired one....
There doesnt need to be any other reason....
120 yards, through the wingbutts, DRT & no meat damage. 130gr Ballistic tips, 60gr R22(max), sub-MOA at 3165fps. The 2nd load I tried in it. And it has nice wood.
Did it over penetrate. Nice gun and bird. Wish we could hunt them with a rifle here in Missouri.
Target of opportunity, as hens & gobblers are both legal during deer season in Texas. In the spring it's only gobblers.
One morning last season a group of them were roosting near my blind. As daylight came they'd take off and fly toward my blind, no more than 5-6 feet away at eye level, and then land just out of view. After 4 or 5 of them went past, one at a time, I was wishing for a pistol, instead of Dad's old .25-06, and its funky old Weaver.
Figured you would...just not so fast. I'm impressed.

You boys having fun? Dan...in the mail to you this morning, buddy.
I guess Deb kept the cash I left on the nightstand.
As for the cigars, knocking back a couple of primo smokes with you is a given. Watching Pat destroy one is also a given...and a trip highlight.
Dan...check airfare costs late tonight through tomorrow am. Late Tuesday through Wednesday am are when most flight discounts hit, per my buddy in the business.
Pat...do you want me to get another room at the Contessa for you or do you just want to share the king bed with Dan, like last year?
Flights booked. Arrive S.A. on the 17th at noon. Time to get squared away and stuff.
Alright, gents - we shall have to outfit our Teutonic guest in true American style.
I've already informed him he'll need a 10 gal hat. (That's 38 liters, to him... ) I'm thinking he's gonna need some Wrangler jeans and Tony Llamas to fit in down there. What else will he need to complete the ensemble?
I think we should wait to break it to him, though, that he has to drink Keystone Light to fit in...
Me thinks, something 'triple distilled' from the auld sod would be in order. And I might have just the thing in me satchel, if there's any left when we arrive on the 18th, that is.

Speaking of travel, who thinks they will need/want to borrow a rifle - or need a ride from the airport?
I'll have a couple of AR's ready, and could bring a couple of other interesting things, too, if someone would like to go that route. For the rifles I want to make sure I have scopes & loads ready to go. You can be the first kid on your block to shoot a pig with a .475 Turnbull
I have a supercab pickup, and can easily chauffeur three people, so let me know if you want a ride.
I know there is much talk about low light hunting but I am the only one that will bring a (secondary) non-optics rifle? I am thinking the M71 or little 8x57 Mauser carbine.
Past gatherings at the Hog Hunt people often brought some wonderful things - double rifles, custom guns, & vintage guns for example. Usually about mid-day folks would head out to the range either for skeet or to shoot rifles & pistols.
I'll probably bring my Shiloh Sharps and the original High Wall, both in .45-90. Maybe the 1907 .351 Winchester, 1920 Savage bolt action, and the .475 Turnbull. None of them are Purdeys but they are unusual and interesting.
Dan, I finally got my ducks in a row, I'm set to come along. I'll forward my check today.
I won't be coming til Thursday, though. That should give y'all enough time to get over your San Antonio hangovers so's you can tolerate bein' around a sober sonofabitch like me...

Don't forget a shotgun. At past hog hunts, there was quite a bit of fun busting clays.
And it looks like this place might have a proper skeet range.
OK bishes, I'm back. I can see that I was not missed in the least, so am filing a 'Hurt Feelers' report. I see mention was made that we may have to 'gay up' and dress like Bob.... I should be able to find a polo shirt in Montana someplace .... More later. EdM: I will be in touch!
Your going to have to tell about your fun in the Sun.
Quickie pig report...we hunted an outfit about 30 miles from where the campfire hunt will be. Lotsa pigs, but no adults. Last night we settled on filling the cooler with pocket pigs. Heres a #30, a #40, and a#50.

While you were gone we took up a collection to buy you a .270. Bigger critters show up if you have a .270
If I can find my old Rem Model 11, A5 Browning look a like, I'll bring it. I have never shot it so hope it shoots. But your welcome to use it. 12 gauge. Kids have the better 12 gauges I used to own. Still own but they have them in a different town.
I just hope the Encore shoots. It's been misfiring the past 2 weeks and read that it's a common problem. Not enough hammer spring. So I bought a heavier spring and need to test fire it on Sunday. It works fine with the 12ga. but not so much with the 30.06.
I don't own a 270 so that one is out. Will bring a working 308, means I can get it dirty, An AR 556/223. Both scoped and sited in I hope. The Rem 11 12 gauge Maybe a 686 I have never shot " a 44 mag for the fun of it " a 45 lc No telling what I'll grab. Of course the 15" blade knife for Roger to blood on a hog. Cause he can still run after them.

Then bring a few slugs, didn't know they would shoot 100/150 yards. Never used one. Could bring the 45/70 but no scope little lever action, fun to shoot. Not real sure how far that one will shoot and the drop at 150.
I'm driving down so not as hard for us to carry a few extras.
I shoot deer with the 12ga all the time at 100+yds. Got a 3-9x40mm on it. It's accurate. But then again, I miss a lot from that distance. But that's operator error.

Slug guns are a good choice. Bring a few buckshot just in case.
Speaking of green lights. I went on Amazon and found a Chinese Led green light for around $12.00 Got a remote tail switch for $3.00 found a regular led light just like the green one with two batteries and a charger for $13.00 and a mount for light to scope tube for $9.00. So for less than $40.00 I'm all set. I am sure it is not as good as the high dollar ones but It shines out to 150 to 200 yards pretty easy.

Fire your itinerary to edmusetti at gmail dot com. I fly in noon on the 13th.
That's a pretty good price for a new one. Realistically any of the black pad #1's will shoot well, so you may be able to shop around on GB for a better price, or see what kind of wood it has before you buy.
I was looking at the caliber also Patrick. I'm a slut for nice wood like you have there! Purchasing the .243 over the internet fronCDNN it would be sight unseen I guess I could call and ask if they could send pics of the wood they have 3 in stock
hotel not booked yet. Arrive late on 16th. All of 17th to by boots and a hat. Will be checking into the Hotel situation soonest and definetly intend to meet up with you guys on the 17th evening time.
It is a Ugartechea Jabali. It has .002" choked 25" barrels and is regulated for the Brenneke 1 oz MP slug which it throws into 2" pairs dead on the sights at 50 yards. Goes a tick under 7#. A cool little piece for sure.
I want to bring my 45lc but I cant find ammo in this state
Tell me what you want and I will load it. I have H110, 2400, 4227, LilGun and HS6. Cast slugs from 275 grs to 325 grs in various diameters. Also jacketed 260 gr Partitions. Let me know.
The video card on the old (2003) computer became ill (again). So now I am in the brave new world of new computers, and Windows 8. Silly damn puters anyway...

Yeah, he was really cool. We clicked like a well oiled machine. The weather screwed us out of a night and a half, but Im sure that wasn't the guides fault
Patrick that one is used but say he doesn't think it's been shot Seems with that scope mounted it would have been fired?
Ya never know, some guys call them used if they've ever been taken out of the box. I would not be afraid of any black pad #1, if I liked the caliber. It will have one of Ruger's hammer-forged barrels, and they usually shoot very well.
Define your degree of woodslut-itis The only plain #1 I have was Dad's rifle - and it shoots very well.
7x57's are fairly common, and if it was me I'd hold out for one with better wood.
I have seen NO Boddingtons that I thought had excellent wood. I have seen a couple of .450 Nitros that were decent, with some mineral streaks, but none even close to my .30-40.
That said For me I'd probably go for the .250 Savage, as that should be a nice Texas deer rifle, and fairly rare. You may never see one with better wood than that one. But - splitting hairs - I'd like a 7x57 better for big-bodied deer, black bear, elk, and moose. YMMV All of them should shoot well for you.
Right? I'm still liking the Boddington 7x57 but I'm awaiting pictures on the 6.5x55 he has 7 of them and is going to cherry pick the best and send me a picture tonight
I'm not much on the fancy chitt as you guys are, but I've got a bushnell on mine and it's fine and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The reticle ain't great though.
Thanks, I guess I'd better shut up and go home and get a beer before I get myself in trouble. And no, I don't drink PBR. You'll get a laugh, it's Busch Light.
RL-22 and 140 gr Partitions will put you in a very good place Dan, the little 'Swede isn't shot at the longer ranges [1/1.5K yards] to worry about 20 grains of bullet weight imho, the 140 NPT won't let you down.
ahhh...scope mounting on a #1. That's also interesting...
I found the old Burris Signature (and its Pentax partner) that had the adjustment knobs well forward about perfect. They had good optics for the day though a tad heavy. Still have one on an old 243 RSI.

I like to use the Ruger offset rings, unless the scope is unusually long, or is straight with no objective bell. One downside is they are only available in 1".
That's a sweet-looking No. 1, Dan! I'm really fond of the 6.5 Swede cartridge. I still have a M93 Swede in full military config in my gunsafe that I had intentions of sporterizing many years ago, but I've come to believe it's just too cool as it is to carve it up.
I'm thinking I'll bring my new 9.3X74R double rifle on this hunt, get some blood on it before I take it to Zim in August. That and the 1886 ELR I've had sittin' in the safe for 10 years and never shot one thing with it that wadn't made of paper or cardboard...
Nope I'm showing H4831sc and Magnum for the 130 gr AB and H4895 and Varget for the 125 Partition which means R15 will also work as will the 4064 Nosler 7 data
Hodgdon shows 4350 making best velocity with 120's and 4831 with 140's. I'd be tempted to try Big Game first. They also limit pressure to only 46,000CUP, and the #1 can take a bit more - anything the brass can take.
The post office is getting pretty awful. I got someone else's new health insurance card in my mailbox. Not even close to the same name, address, or even city.

I used to use those as well but the mentioned scopes did not require them. They were pretty slick. Alas my #1 days have long been over selling what I had many years ago. I do get and itch for one every now and again though.
Ed I figure it I don't have to use the off set rings a just flip um in the classifieds but wanted them here just incase so I can rock and roll as soon as the rifle gets here I'd rather not have to use them
no worries, I meant Dan's offset rings, if he decides he does not need them.
There was a .220 Swift in San Angelo 20+ years ago that was jaw-dropping. I looked at it 3-4 times, didn't have the money. Finally walked in there with the money, and it was gone. I keep hoping it will turn up again some day. Along with a Field's Patent single shot
As a sidenote, I have about half a box of Norma 156 grain Oryx, and a full box of the discontinued Sierra 160 grain SMP's. One of these days I am going to get around to doing a bit of experimentation with the heavies...
Been keeping the 156 grainers in case I miraculously draw an Elk tag here in KY.
From what I recall, teespring's sizes are a touch on the small size, so you may wanna go up a size. I have some XL's from them that would look cute on Porch Girl...
Never flown with a gun before, so I'm not sure how much they beat'em up. I think my case is pretty good, I hope, but it'll be packed with my scatter gun also. We'll see. Good thing they have a range down there.
FWIW my cousin just met me for a pig hunt in Texas, and he flew a cheapie Axis/ Bushnell combo in the flimsiest plastic case you ever saw....and it all survived without a scratch and worked just fine.

I knew you would Stuart, you were asking earlier. I really like this years shirt,God BlessTexas!
I'm happy we are all going to Texas. It's been on my bucket list. Thanks for all your hard work Dan.
THIS for sure. I've been looking for an excuse to make a trip to Texas for a few years now. I really appreciate the opportunity to come down and see a few things that have been on my list, along with spending a few days with the campfire crew.
Apologies Dan. A chitt week of work in the shipyard here so settled in the apartment tonight (Friday) with a martini and queso and chips, life of a married bachelor... Been f'in with you on the Savage. I will repay with a perfect martini in March, OK?
My ruger offset rings just arrived they shipped them 2nd day air no charge Damn these things weigh as much as a truck! Just weighed them 3.4 oz ea. almost an extra 1/2 lb on the rifle WOW
Sorry guys but I can't make it this year. Just had extensive low back surgery with lots of hardware and Doc says "no go" for at least 3-4 months. Ouch! I wish all of you the best!!!! Regards, bgcatty

Yes they are tanks. Leupold's are leaner and what I run but do not believe they make offsets? I have a set of pretty rare one piece S&K rings that weigh just a couple of ounces total. They are matte though. I'll bring them to the hunt. Like these below, they wrap around the scope.

We have had a couple issues in the past with getting the shirts on time, but the owner was a stand up guy and reprinted and over night shipped them to the camp at no cost and still sent the original shirts out so it was a 2 for 1
I purposely put this together earlier than I usually do but wasn't figuring on trans global orders!
I am very happy you did and was not complaining. Actually - I think it would be funny, if the shirt arrived on the 13th to be carried back on the 16th.
I look forward to meeting you in Texas, sitting down face to face, trusting our communication will go smoothest - with a beverage of choice helping my english.

Been out of town, will order a shirt Sunday night when I again get back. Yes back to farm soon today and Sunday. Then I will order a T-shirt or two. Found Varget Friday. Bought 2 one pound bottles.
Ich bedanke mich herzlich für Ihre Mühen in der Organisation dieser Veranstaltung. Freue mich sehr darauf, Sie kennenzulernen und auf das Jagen in dieser Truppe.
Careful, boys: He'll rat you out to his fellow Forst-ers if he thinks you can't unnerstan him. Invariably, though, he says, "uh-mare-ee-KAN", and then they all start laughing.
I took some German lessons from a very imposing Frau prior to my last trip over, but apparently learning how to say, "vegetables", "married", and "knife" in the local language, isn't quite adequate to help one navigate most hunting situations.
Still, when the local Jaeger's set you up with this:
The language doesn't seem to matter much.
I suppose if we were to offer him the American equivalent in hunting camp fare, we'd hand him a Slim Jim & a Busch Light? (In addition to the orange juice and the razor... )
Maybe Keystone Light & Vienna Sausages? That'd be closer to home for him, no?
During our hunt in the Talkeetnas, we had Mountain House & protein bars. I think he & I had enough of those for a lifetime. Fortune smiled upon us, though, & we were able to supplement with this:
Alas, we had no PBR on the mountain.
Something tells me, though, that we'll not be in short supply of potables at ADL7, however.
Thank you all for the kind words if the cook isn't up to snuff I'll find my way to the kitchen don an apron...they do have a smoker there as well just incase but from the looks of the pictures we should be go to go.
BFF club? Sort of an exclusive group? Does this piggie from 2014 let me in? (Rifle is a 1903 Springfield in 450 Bushmaster.) .
. However, I'm having second thoughts about my application for admission:
Wikipedia: BFF is a phrase that describes a close friendship typical of teenage girls and young women. Such friendships are characterized by intimacy, trust, and a sense of permanence.
Urban dictionary: BFF has two definitions, the most common of which is Best Friends Forever; the other is the complete opposite and is Big Fat [bleep].
I suspect Campfire usage involves all of the above, perhaps simultaneously.
Not enough white and black but the rifle elevates you into the club
A humble thank you, O Gate-Keeping Cerberus of the BFF group. Next go-round, I'll try for a more admissible piggy color to elevate my club status from probationary to permanent.
Because we're likely to be working from stands in Texas, one of the rifles I may bring is the one below. Assembled from assorted parts, it weighs 13.5 pounds without the 12X Leupold, so it's not really designed for walking around. It is chambered in 450 Bushmaster and is unblooded, except for a pigeon I shot 4 years ago. Ammo may be a 160-grain Barnes HP at about 3150 fps MV. --Bob .
I've never shot a pig before, so help me out here. You guys are serious about shooting them in head?
In the ear cannel or right behind it. That's if you think you can do it, are a great shot, scope dialed in perfect, shooting the perfect reload. Yes
I'm bringing my knife, if the ear don't work for you the knife will. Just stick it in the heart, how you do that is up to you. We will have no dogs to hold the hog for you. You may need to pet the hog a little to clam him/her down before you stick him/her.
Or we can stitch you up out there for a small fee. In real life, we will have one fine Dr out there, bet he brings some kind of bag. Your going to get to drink with him so be nice.
I passed up 50 boxes of slugs yesterday at an auction. $5.00 per box. I have never shot a slug gun before, don't need one out here so passed them up. Rem brand.
We had a trip to the PINS, coast area, to fish with some of the group. Had a young doc in that group. One of the young hands was placing bait (big fish) on the hook. Stuck the ( I'll call it the bait pole cause I don't know the proper name) into his wrist, yes they are like a spear and sharp. He was hurting for sure, Doc didn't of course have x ray on the beach but was able to give the shot that helped stop the pain for the two hour drive back to Corpus C and hospital. Yes Docs are important.
We can't use rifles here. You have to have a rifled slug barrel. I use Breneke Magnum Crush 3". They're made for a rifled barrel. Slug riffling is opposite direction from regular slugs. It shoots 1500fps and is 1 1/2 oz. Shoots almost flat up to 100 yrds. only falls about 2" from 50yrds. to 100. Falls about 5" from 100 to 150yds. BDC scope helps.
Hell DocRocket will be there! He's a trauma surgeon,he'll fix you up right there
Of course, depending on what you did to need stitching up, he may may or may not administer painkillers, while he's stitching
There is a Browning .308 available, which can be loaned out. It is not stylish, but it is MOA or less with preferred loads, and would work fine for accurate shots, and make large knives unecessary

You did good. This was done in a small 6' foot overhang cut out in the cliff. Bobby was the only one that could bend over to get into the area. He's got a good back.
Of course, but I had to act like ___ a little and rub things in.
The new house and job are worth a lot. Remember that. I have looked at the Tenn. hunt for six years and said I need to sign up. Just never did. I survived, you will too.
I'll tell you what, as your working during those days find a person, turn your camera off and think hog.
Stonecutter, just tell them you pick up the 1 ton stones before you cut em.
All are good people on this trip, any trip I have gone on, we just had fun in the sun, little hunting, little drinking and a little great food. Not much more than you could ask for.
Looking forward to it. Gotta go now, it's beer time and have to get ready for the Bahama's tomorrow for a few days. I'll be thinking about you Dan, how much snow for you today? A foot?

Bobby- Rather than finding some person with a strong back and weak mind to lug it around for me, I was thinking that a set of custom wheels might be nice. Like this: .
(available here: http://www.hansenwheel.com) . These thoughts lead to interesting ideas about proper armament for future hunts. Solid shot? Grape shot? Cannister?
Or we can stitch you up out there for a small fee. In real life, we will have one fine Dr out there, bet he brings some kind of bag. Your going to get to drink with him so be nice.
Just remember... cash only, up front, and no HMO discounts...
yeah, I'd like one as well. I carried the .45-90 to the deer blind one day this past season, looked at a small buck, looked down at the 450gr bullets, and decided some things are just silly even if they are feasible.
I've come close to buying one of the 1980's Winchester Commemoratives in .38-55. They can be found in decent used condition and cost a heck of a lot less than pre-WWII lever guns. Nice cartridge in a single shot, too.
I'm no real fan of them either. I'd just say that any gun with plastic is 180 degrees from a No.1 with good wood, and chambered for a classy cartridge.
Funny! Patrick when you reload for your No 1s do you try to kiss lands?
If I can, yes. You can't always however. Some of them have pretty conventional throats, and some are really long. The .30-40 is really long, probably because some of the old factory loads had 220gr bullets. My .270 #1 has a conventional throat, and is superbly accurate.
These are .475 Turnbulls. That's a 500gr Woodleigh on the right, and it's not close to the Ruger's lands. They're still extremely accurate.
Just enough to insure easy [quick] loading and unloading, we of course lack the powerful camming action on loading and a claw extractor on ejection/unloading of a bolt gun here.
I have 3 bullets to try already figuring I'll have at least one of them singing so likely won't get to the 156 oryx But I'll file that one just incase thanks Bobby
I thought I understood that in all its fullness, until I hunted in the Eagle Mountains of west Texas. That country takes "sticks or bites" to a whole nother level...
We should do fine in the relatively benign environs of south Texas next month.
Dan, I got some Swedish mil-surp 156 gr 6.5x55 loads hangin' around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find 'em and bring 'em on down to try in that fancy new rifle of yours.
That's a nice one. New cartridges chambered this year are .257 Weatherby in #1B, 28" barrel, and a .223 #1V with 1 in 8" twist. They are both Lipsey's specials. I'm going to hold out for one of each, assuming I can find ones with nice wood.
I have 3 bullets to try already figuring I'll have at least one of them singing so likely won't get to the 156 oryx ...
Dan, a couple of hog hunts ago, I took a pig with a Ruger 1A in 7x57 with a 175 grain Hornady RN Interlock. Worked great.
You won't have time this hunt, but seriously, have a look at Hornady's 160 grain RN Interlock in 6.5. I'm sure it will kill stuff deader than snot in your rifle, and damn, they look so righteous loaded in a case.
Ok loaded up some 140gr Partitions over R22 and some 130 gr Accubonds over H4831sc Now if temps get over zero and it stops snowing for a day I'll hit the range
Went to the range today, took some eclectic things - a .218 Bee #1, a .300 Weatherby Ultralight, and the Shiloh .45-90. At 100 yards the best 3 shot group from the Shiloh beat the best from the .300 Weatherby. Which is encouraging for the Shiloh, and damned annoying for the Roy.
I did try some Reloader 26 in the Roy, with 210 grain Long Range Accubonds. I wasn't happy with the accuracy, but they certainly were going faster than Nosler says they will.
The .218 Bee is wicked accurate. First load I tried put 3 in 1/2" at 100 yards.
Sorry guys got the same email we didn't reach our goal I'll see what I can do but at this late time to start a new campaign we likely wouldn't get them in time. For me to relaunch they want an order of 35 shirts I don't understand why it said your shirts will be printed in the order page but obviously they are not.
OK guys here's what I was able to do relaunch a new campaign with a goal of only 10 this time.It only runs for 3 days so shirts will still arrive in time. Ready you may want to sent it local here some place. I apologize for the inconvenience but you guys need to go to this new link before 3 days are up and reorder
Yes it is met and they will be run this time Sorry about the last go round odd that the page said they would be printed without the goal being met But we are back on track now as long as everyone who wants one reorders
I'm not quite ready yet. Must get the Becky first. Then we will be ready. Last trip I was on in Oct. I bought some cigars. No one smoked them on that trip. I know Dan said he would bring a few, but not going to put it all on his back. So on this trip what do you think on numbers Dan? Will bring 4 cigars for Pat and everyone else to fight over. The special ones or can get just a bucket of gum at Sam's and they can think cigar as they chew.?
Just got 2 shirts, 1 for me and 1 for Roof. I feel for you Dan, Just got back from the Bahamas. 75 degrees and sun burn. Too bad I'm back here now, 15 degrees, but no snow til tonight.
I should be able to tighten things up I'm thinking... I may back of the 140gr partition load a 1/2 grain and see what gives there. I know it's not a custom build so I will temper my 1 ragged hole thoughts for now
Easy there, Katzenjammer - or I'll put sauerkraut in your Würzelpeter.
And you'd better start scouting-out places in San Antonio to find an orange-handled knife to take home to the Missus. You can't come home without trinkets.
In thinking Im gonna make a stop In San Antonio on my down and see the Alamo. Is it worth it?
I think it is, if you like history and museums of that era. The thing I remember most about it was walking around the exterior walls, and seeing many thousands of little round indentations in the walls - the impact marks of musket balls. It's obvious a hard battle was fought there.
Good idea but I am only gonna have a few hours to kill. Thought the Alamo might be a quick stop. Always wanted to see it. Hell Birdy might want to take me on a bike ride and I aint built for bike riding anymore.
classic!!!!! Bob can never look at starfishes the same.

I saved that pic so that I can be a strong reference and supporter of Bobby for when he competes for a white shirt promotion. Cops deal with A-Holes every day. The force needs officers who know how to deal with those A-Holes and how to train other officers in dealing with those A-Holes.
That is one beautiful rifle and in a great caliber. I still can't believe I'm missing out on the Hog Hunt this year. Maybe next year. Regards to All bgcatty
I lucked out travel wise, Dan. Pat's lending me a 22-250 for the hunt. I love air traveling without my own rifles for short hunts, especially when I know the lender is a great shot and has the rifle nicely sighted-in.

Very nice. I think he said something about DeFlave furnishing the ammo.

I suppose a pic really is worth a thousand words!
That pic would leave a person speechless.
Speechless hell. That picture will leave a person sightless.

You're welcome to borrow my 270 too, if you want, Bob. Of course, the bullets just bounce right off deer & hogs, so you can "hunt and release"...
17th to San Antonio to hook up with Dan and party the Riverwalk on St Pat's Day. I've rented us an SUV and we'll drive to camp the next morning after Dan finishes his manscaping.
My cell number is 703.200.1464 for anyone who'd like to meet up with us in San Antonio on the 17th or for those who might need a ride to camp.
Pat...let me know if you're joining us so Dan can wear that special cowboy shirt you love so much. By the way...you were cracking up yourself yesterday with those text pics, weren't you punkin'?
I'm likely gonna drive down the morning of the 19th... can't get away from work before then. I'll be going thru San Antone if anybody needs a ride that morning.
It's been in the single digits for near 4 days and no higher than the low 20s for almost 2 weeks now. My boys have been hiding up in my stomach the entire time. This sucks and the snowstorm today also calls for icy rain which realyl F***ks it all up around these parts.
I truly can't wait to see my respected 24H buddies down Texas way where I know the temps and weather will be far better.
There is absolutely no basis or need for the month of February. It is my most hated month of them all, period.
Anyways, good morning Jerry. Still remember you going out late at night with your truck and tools to help those kids stuck on that back road of the Tenn pig hunt property. You remind me of a friend I have here who owns a bunch of auto body shops who not only looks like you but, also like you, he's always stopping to help folks in need out of their jams. Those kids would have been totally F'd if it wasn't for you and the 24H boys who jumped in to help. It's typical of the 24H guys who show up for these gigs but you were the guy this time. I remember that kind of schit.
You didn't further traumatize those kids by taking Bobby with you, did you?
HAHA, Tejas will be a welcomed thaw indeed Bob, sorry for the ice bucket conditions, ole al-bore was right, must be that global warming deal again, eh?
The thanks goes to Pugs for giving me the hit on the stranded kids on the mountainside, a bit more wiggling around and they and their jeep woulda been salvage yard bound.
And no, Bobby didn't get to go, he woulda went all light-saber samurai and spooked those kids to Virginia.
I have something like that. Run no chargeable battery. Just replace as needed. The most important part of that light is that clamp 2nd item upper left. Cause of that clamp, light will attach to any rifle. Have to go see if I can locate the clamp for my light.
$74 shipped. I'll advise how it works when it arrives.
Like Gunner I'm planning on bringing two or three AR's, a 5.56, .300 Blackout and a .308, with illuminated reticle scopes and lights, if folks want to borrow them.
I think thats the one Pat has as well as Bob and they both love it
I've used Pat's and another friend's. It works really well. Haven't killed anything with it yet, but coulda nailed a bobcat at Pat's lease with it last year.
I'm ordering one today. I have a Burris FullField 1-4X scope with red dot reticle, which will be good til full dark, but I want to have full dark capability.
Shop on Amazon for the kill lights. I got a green light, regular light, 2 batteries, charger, remote tail switch and mount for under 40 bucks. Light shines out to 200 yo 250 yds easy.
When we made the move into Town at the end of January we cleaned out my upright freezer. I unwittingly told The Redhead that she could give anything away that was in it, forgetting all my ground wild pork was in there.
Oh, well, a Messican family has been eatin' well and that means I gotta kill me some more hogs soon. Dunno if I can wait for March, though... my kids are all comin' down for my birthday weekend (3/12-3/17) and they loooooooooove grilled antelope-pork burgers (50:50 ground venison:wild pork... delish!). If I don't have time to hunt, I'll have to get some wild pork from my buddy by then. Might be able to go after piggies on my lease on 3/13-14 with the son-in-law, if he comes, though...
Pat...consider it done.Unless I see a monster with tusks I could see from my blind, or wherever, I'll shoot a smaller, eating sized pig for you.
I have two beauts of hog mounts already and I'd only shoot something bigger than what I've already taken. You'd get that meat too but, I'll likely not have that opportunity so I'll focus of taking a hog worthy of your sausage making and/or whatever else you'd like to do with the meat of a 80-120#.
Dan...sent full itinerary to your regular email rather than through PM here. Wanted to let you know in case you have it such that my emails automatically is forwarded to spam or trash.
My wife said she wants me to send some home, but can't send 3 of them home. Gonna have to give some deer meat away. But a lot of my meat is in the form of burger and hot italian sausage. That chitt cost money to get made.
It was about 80 when we drove to Clearwater at around 1030. The beach was fogged in, but Connor didn't much care. Didn't mind the 60ish degree water either.

Hey George, What's shakin' ?
I'm in Largo right next door to Clearwater. How long are you down here for?
OK...Ive been-and still am- in Florida for the past week and I had to read back through many pages of this thread to catch up. Noticed a few things I feel compelled to remark on...
1. It appears that I haven't been missed.
At all...
I will be filing a Hurt Feelers report with Rick ASAP.
2. Dans new rifle looks like its ready to kill pigs!
3.Pat called Bob a C%#@ksucker and will soon be ogling his "purty mouth...."
4.Docs new 9.3 will be there, so we can all shoot it till he runs out of expensive ammo.
5.Bobby- not goin be there, busy trying to fit into a white shirt? Could that be right? Those guys turn into butt holes when they get a white shirt ( see#3 above...)
6.Dan-I do have, and have used the kill light you posted. Mine is green and worked fine out to 100 yards.
7.Pat in a halter top? I think where he is from, they call those 'wife-beaters'...
8.I am amongst those flying, so anything I kill will go home with guys that are driving....
I have been honing my already considerable skills on smallish pigs in Florida ( small pigs are harder targets...at least thats the story Im going with...) and I am presently posting this from a condo overlooking Boca Ciega bay in St. Petersburg, so all you snow bound bishes can suck it! Its what you get for not missing me!
Whilst spring is seemingly eminent here in Korea with AM's at freezing and hitting low 40's later in the day I am so the fphukk ready for home in Texas...
Last week, they cancelled school for "cold weather" on -5 and -1 degree days. This morning, the local airport claimed -20F. And the boys went to school.
I just don't get it.
Either way, I'm sure Crystal City will be warmer than here come 3/18.
Hell I was shoveling the driveway Sunday morning in my carhart jacket and underwear,no pants... let the dog out picked up the shovel and just started doing it

well, in the world of (relatively) inexpensive toys...I picked up a Loopey Mark 6 to go on the AR-10. Used, with plenty of handling marks but the glass is good and and everything seems to work. Came with a matching LaRue QD mount.
Now I just need to download the manual to figure out how to run the contraption...
That's a nice one and a good price If you want a .25-06. If I didn't already have two .25-06's, including a Mystery Mauser and a #1V, I might jump on it. I'm real interested in the .257 Roy #1B, and the fast twist .223 #1V that have been announced for this year.
As far as the seller asking "have you ever seen better wood on a #1", uhhh, yeah, three times. I own all three of them, too.
Has anyone received the final word as to whether Dana and Terri are coming?
Night time varmint hunting taunting with Terry is one of my most enjoyable times on these hunts. Plus, Dana and Terri always add to the pleasure and fun of these get-togethers.
I live in Dunedin and would have loved to get together with you all for a beer or something while you were here.
Please let me know when in the area as I have had so much hospitality from the Campfire folks I have met in my travels I have a big pay it forward tab to work off.
If there is anything I can do or that you need while you are in the Tampa area please do not hesitate to contact me.
Ok just loaded up 50 rounds of the 125 gr Partitions and will roll with that load. I'll hit the range once more and tune things a hair and call it good
Ok just loaded up 50 rounds of the 125 gr Partitions and will roll with that load. I'll hit the range once more and tune things a hair and call it good
I had some 110gr .30cal TAC-TX show up today, which I'll load in the .300 Blackout.
That impromptu, spontaneous serenade you and Pat woke me up at 130 am to hear is forever imprinted into my brain. It was so endearing. I've never had such a beautiful song written about me before. Glad I could contribute to your Grammy success.
Ok I've been f'ing with this Ruger all morning Just not getting consistent groups. I shimmed it and floated the barrel,it was so tight on one side you couldn't get a [bleep] hair in between the barrel and forend
Loaded up some more rounds and heading back to the range Fingers crossed I have this gunsmithing crap figured out If not Patrick will fix it right
Right it's hard to heat the barrel it 14 degrees I have frozen snot on my face!
I have things worked out 125 Partitions are out 130 gr Accubonds are in! I'm happy now I have to remember it's 14 degrees, trigger pull is a bit more than normal and I'm shooting a 2x7 scope
I would also get a case length gauge and see how much headspace is increasing when the they fire. Sometimes they'll be a little roomy in the chamber, and partial resizing to control headspace will help.
Ok I'm really really ready for Texas Coldest Feb. on record here,14 days below zero snow 26 out of 27 days so far 95" of snow to date
We had the coldest MONTH (not just February) ever here in Buffalo, avg around 11.? degrees for the month...........F-That! We never hit 32 for the entire month of February.
Snake Chaps? Any body need some CCI mag large rifle primers? I have some I dont need I dont remember if it is a full 1000 or if some have been used. Will donate and bring to hunt if anyone is interested.

The little Browning green flashlights arrived too, and seems to be suitable. It had no trouble lighting up trees ~100 yards away, and it comes with a rail mount for an AR.
Ok final finish up on the Ruger no 1. I'm sealing the inside of the forend with Helmsman spar urethane(one more coat to go). Then its a wrap and time to start packing stuff for Tx

I fly into San Antonio noon Friday the 13th (oops...) and have only Saturday to get out and shoot. Tony tells me I have a box of 140 gr AB's on hand that did just fine on this little oryx a few years ago. I am thinking the Jim Wisner built QD rings and bases will still be spot on with the 2-7x LRD last used. Like damn surgery just getting them on. So looking forward to this trip.
I fly back to Korea 30 March and work a month or so then retire back to Texas and take my vacation time. Come June, when Tony finishes the year (11th), he and I will head to the place in Idaho. Dear Wife/Mom will join in July and we will stay through August. I am thinking I may put in for my Colorado elk tag in 49 which would be a slam dunk at this point as I have not pulled since 2006. Spring bear in Idaho next spring and a brown bear chase with dear wife outside Sitka is booked as well. After an azzload of work the chit is starting to align bud. More than willing for summer visitors this year. The lake can offer big chit at times. Just let me know. Rainbows as it cools are supposedly nuts. Lakes abound in the summer.
After a few years abroad dear wife does not want Speedo's and she was a swimmer. It's either chubby Italian's (she's lucky) or the rest, non appealing. Gave them up on Tony when was a one nutter at age 7. Backstroke champ that he was....
OK Gents for this years smoking enjoyment I just procured a box of one of my favorite full bodied stogies.I hope you aficionados enjoy them as much as I do !
I go to JoAnn fabrics and get a 50% off coupon and just buy new foam and custom cut everything out because every trip I'm bringing different firearms and gear. Traveled as far as Africa with that type set up and everything stays in one piece
A sharpie to trace and an electric carving knife and you are good to go
Last year I went to buy orange fabric to make small flags for my planer boards I use for lake fishing...I sweet talked the young lady at the sewing machine into stitching up my fabric into little flags with pockets to fit tightly over the wooden dowels I purchase. She said she wasn't supposed to but made an exception for me
That's because you're the WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
I will admit to knifing the legs outta worn out jeans and taking them to Wifey to sew one end closed, fill with sand, then fold over and let her sew the other end. ROR
Man, I am seriously behind in my packing for this trip... I know I got a Speedo around here somewheres, although The Redhead said somethin' during the move about if'n she ever saw me wearin' it the whole deal'd be off. But I reckon if I bring it to hog camp ain't no WAY she'll ever see me wearin' it...
Got my green hog light for the AR charged and mounted, and should be getting the low-light Trijicon scope for my double rifle by Friday, so lots of time to get 'er sighted in.
Okay, now if I can just find my Montecristo cee-gars and a pair of cutoff jeans shorts I should be set...
I've got a couple of questions. I'm wondering if we need to bring these things.
Snake leggins? They recommend it in the spring, but it'll probably be the last time I wear them. Not sure if I should order a pair. I've got to do it now if I'm gonna do it.
Beer? I don't know if they have any alcohol there at all. I'm getting at least a 30 pack.
Trap loads? I wonder if they have them there that they'll sell us? I'm stopping at Dick's on the way down and get at least a couple of cases.
There's a Dick's right off of the interstate on the south side of San Antonio at exit 150 off of I35. I'm just taking rifle ammo. I can't fit my slug barrel and my shotgun also. So I'm not bringing it.
Bob, we're flying on United and that's found under the details for luggage regs on the email confirmation for the flight. Not sure if that's for all airlines.
Wow! Everyone is getting spooled up pack this or that...Im going minimalist.....Green kill light, 223ai McFlame,my dark Trayvon hoodie....Im going Ninja Stealth on those pigs!
I'm wearing work boots that I used to use at work. You want snake gators get em. If I wear any, the ones I don't know where they are, will be fall time dove hunting. Kind of depends on the temp and weather while we are out if snakes are going to be out. While hunting hogs, I kind of think with 24 hunters control of the hunters will be #1 to the ranch. Meaning we hunt out of blinds here, with a feeder. So your going to be sitting in something. May be a ground blind or a high blind don't know. They will have to have 24 of those. We are not going to be able to run around too much cause 24 rifles are going to be locked and loaded for hogs. They may sit some behind a tree, I don't know. Land is not flat out there, so we are not going to be in danger from other shooters. So back to snakes, depends on the weather, cold your not going to run into any snakes, warm, you may see some on top of a rock in the sun. Just stay away from them if you see one.

Do I need to go out and buy a hoodie? I don't even own one.
I will be in San Antonio Tuesday morning. Offering to do last minute shopping and transport. Thinking of getting the Chevy Spark and picking up ingwe...

No, not if you don't want to. Our president said we should do something to "Honor Trayvon" so I bought a hoodie, and I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I wear it because that POS is no longer on our side of the sod.

Bob and I will be in San Antonio Tues morning also, did you book a room yet?

Bob answered the alcohol part. Stone cutter you should have a good time. Being on a plane, that does limit amount brought. Hunting cloths, something for mild weather, something to keep you warm if cold front comes into the area. Not extreme warm just whatever you have that you have room to pack. Good light that will shine about 150 yards. If you have a colored lens great, if not bring something. You going to be sitting somewhere until it's dark. Your scope or your eyes may need some help. Chiggers could be out by that time so maybe spray your cloths before you get them packed with something and let it dry. This is your hunting cloths only of course, put in air tight bag in luggage. Bob is the expert on chiggers. Ask him. If I can find my old Rem Model 11 (A-5 Look alike)12 ga I'll bring it and your welcome to shoot it a the clays. The guys driving are not limited like you will be, so let us help you out with some of this stuff. Got to go.
ELIMITICK CLOTHING FEATURES: 1. INSECT SHIELD REPELS... has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges (no see-ums).
I'm going to skip the snake leggins, just go with work boots and keep my eyes opened.
Forgot about the bugs. I've got some dirt scented bug repellant for hunting for those nasty little critters.
Thanks for the offer on the shotgun, I appreciate it, but I think I'm going to bring my Rem 870 pump. That's what I'm most comfortable with. I know some of you guys have some nice automatics and over/under's, I'd probably rip off the forehand trying to pump it. If I use someone else's gun, I won't hit the broad side of a barn. This way I can miss with confidence. I'm going to leave the slug barrel for the Encore at home, it tears up the meat too much.
Just ordered a Pursuit X1 Predator Light Kit 180 lumens. Mounts to the scope. Will shine 160 yrds. $70.00. Probably a waste of money, but at least I'll still see the rat bastards if they come in while it's dark.
Had to leave quick earlier. Back now. Ok next area is the bubble gum, I got the old style for you non cigar smokers. A whole bucket, 380 pieces. I can't take the sugar so you must chew lets say 8 pieces a day. On the lights looks like you guys did good. I'll put new batteries in mine. I remember reading somewhere on the web site of this ranch that we are supposed to get to the gate, call ranch and they will come open the gate?? Sprint I'll bet ten $ does not work out there. So how is this going to be handled? Directions, hope they print, don't want to get lost out there.

ATT is best service others are spotty.I'll talk to the ranch manager and get that worked out.We can put someone on gate duty with a case of beer
Spotty on phone. ATT bought all rights way back when. Sprint has never worked out in that country. I am able to text message from my phone with a certain app I have, but just learned that at the dove get together.

Well I was just on the locale news here....don't fret I didn't do anything wrong but a 32 yr 6-12 grade cheerleader coach had sex with a 16 yr old student and she lives around a couple of corners from me. I was doing work at a house right next door to were she lives and the news team interviewed me and asked for my comments.

...and you've never even seen her, much less know anything about her. Right?
That would be a beautiful gesture on your part, but Im hitching a ride with EdM....I refuse to ride in anything but a Prius or a Subaru.....
Ok. Plan changed. Looking for a ride now out to ADL7 on the 18th. As FC has kindly offered to take me back on Sunday, I guess there is no need for a rental to be sitting around ADL7 useless...
Traveling light. Just me and one duffle. Cost share contribution goes without saying, but better said anyways.
Gear transporter inbound from Ohio (thanks FC).

Hi Dan, yes, I am booked at the Red Roof on Wolfe. Will be roaming S. Antonio via people mover on Tuesday. Paris Hatters, and some gear stops. Would love to find Bob and you and meet for lunch for example. Other ides welcome and appretiated.
Getting closer. Anybody know the McManus Story "Kid fishing"?
"Its midnight and its opening day. There is not a moment to loose."
Given what I have learned of Tom's size I have decided to take my truck rather than my wife's Porsche. Four door full size Chevy so there is room for another. Just means some gear may have to ride in the bed which is fine assuming either it doesn't rain or the gear is waterproof. Let me know.

The elusive wildlife model is very nice. The Browning takes standard CR123 batteries, and seems to light up stuff over 100 yards away. It comes with a rail mount, and costs a good deal less than the EW model.
I am thinking that after a few evening Beefeater martinis I will just leave the rifle be and chew the fat, so to speak. Are we really thinking there will be that much night hunting?

dunno. I'd love to shoot a boar with big gnarly cutters, with the Sharps.
On my lease near Junction, they are very nocturnal, and are almost never seen during the day. If they get pounded hard on this place, they could be strictly nocturnal, so I'm hedging my bets.

Ed...waiting to see the set-up but Im planning to do most of my hunting at night. We shall see how nocturnal the hogs are.
Dan...The Riverwalk will be hopping this St Patrick's Day we're there. Also, Pat has become more brazen and bold after realizing the coast was clear as to his bet losing T-shirt wearing trauma. I told you he was that way.
I wonder if Birdie or Poboy will swing by for a visit, either in S.A or camp.
I just wanted to make sure we were booked. It would suck if we got all of the way down there to find out they were clueless that we were coming. I worry about chitt like that.
Like Gunner I'm bringing three AR's, and they'll have green lights, and illuminated reticle scopes, if someone needs to borrow one.
10-4, I'll bring some extra AR's, anyone is welcome to hang a light on a rail, I don't mind.
Spare AR's:
PSA 16" mid-length 5.56, 55gr TSX's at 2900 fps, 2.5-10x42 Nightforce, red or green reticle. Bushmaster 20" 450 Bushmaster, 290 gr X bullets, 2250 fps, 2.5-10x24 Nightforce, Red reticle.
Both rifles have extra rail to mount your lights about anywhere you want.
I'd mount mine at 6 o'clock out front and under the barrel.
Man all this bathing suit talk is making me wonder how many are going to be packing .270's.
Now some real rifle results. It hit 60 degrees today here in Misery. Threw some lead out the rifles im bringing.
.25-06 Tikka 3 shot at 100 yds 100 gr ballistic tip. 52 gr RE17
[img:center]
.223 FAUX TI. 3- 50VMAX 26 GR H335 AND 3- 50 TSX 26 GR H335. kinda nice when your varmit and big game bullets shoot to the same POI. Those are 1" dots.

Savage 99 .250 - 3000 3 shots of 3 different loads 90 sierra hpbt, 87 hdy soft point, 87 sierra soft point. re-17, I-4350, and re15 respectably. Open sights holding top of front sight at bottom of the black. Target is set back in the timber a little so It was kinda hard to get a good bead tonight. My eyes aint what they used to be.
Should be quite a collection of old, new and everything in between. Should be a neat collection of firearms, whiskey and tobacco. Wait that sounds like a government agency of some sort.
Maybe its because I am a non- smoker or maybe I am just a totally besotted Heathen but those things look like dog turds to me and I just can't fathom sticking one in my mouth.
You and Pat, (not the cool and normal Pat B.),seemed to be quite adept at spontaneously singing the gay tunes like they had been practiced and rehearsed. That requires experience.
Plus, no one can molest a cigar like Pat. That cigar assault of his is pure You-Tube material.
Anyways, I think I'll put cigar tobacco in my new Vape and shut you heathens down at the get go.
To steer into more calm waters here - will any of the following rifles be there?
Kimber Montana Short Action Kimber Montana Short Action Ascent Nula Forbes Remington SA Ti
Probably a long shot - but would love the opportunity for some first hand impressions.
well, the 7mm-08 Montana is in pieces getting ready to go for a new barrel. There is a .257 Roberts M84M select grade here. I've done nothing with it. I was told it only shoots well with 100gr bullets. I'll tinker with it tomorrow and see if I can get it shooting well enough to bring, if you like.
I'm scratching my head about the Daniel 5.56 AR. It shoots very well, sub MOA, with 69gr & heavier, with its 1 in 7" twist. It doesn't like 60gr Partitions, nor 64gr PowerPoints. It's decent with the 65gr Sierra Gameking, but that bullet is pretty frangible. Unless I can find a tough bullet load that runs in it, I may bring the bull barrel Armalite, which has a 1 in 8" Wylde barrel.
I put up a offer the other day to give away a box of CCI primers. I mistakenly listed them as Large rifle. They are actually Large Pistol primers CCI. Anybody wants them I can bring them down when I come.
Offer still open if anybody needs a ride. I will be coming down I-35 leaving KC on the 17th probably gonna stay overnight between Dallas and San Antonio and then drive out to ranch on the 18th. May make a pit stop at the Alamo as well.
I once had a herd of them show up close at the deer blind, when I wasn't expecting them, and I had a ruger #1 .30-40 with me. I finally pulled up the 1911 .45 and whacked one of them. But I'll always regret not going for a double
I could use a 100 pack or two of the LP primers--sure don't need all of them, though. I use them in my Marlin 1889 38-40 and they are hard to find around here.
Everyone just a reminder, before you arrive at the ranch pick up a
Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting Type 157:$48 Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic Animals and Fowl
Exotic animal refers to grass-eating or plant-eating, single-hoofed or cloven-hoofed mammals that are not indigenous or native to Texas and are known as ungulates, including animals from the deer and antelope families that landowners have introduced into this state. Includes, but is not limited to feral hog, Aoudad sheep, Axis deer, Elk, Sika deer, Fallow deer, Blackbuck antelope, Nilgai antelope, and Russian boar. Exotic fowl refers to any avian species that is not indigenous to this state, including ratites (emu, ostrich, rhea, cassowary, etc.).
There are no state bag or possession limits or closed seasons on exotic animals or fowl on private property. It is against the law to:
Hunt an exotic without a valid hunting license. Hunt an exotic on a public road or right-of-way. Hunt an exotic without the landowner's permission. Possess an exotic or the carcass of an exotic without the owner's consent.
I also read on ADL7's website that you can fill out the forms with them before you go and they would have it there for you when you arrive. And pay them.

Done!
Thanks again, Dan. Now, hopefully they can get it here before I depart on 3/17...
Ok you convinced me. All my info was already in the TX system as I purchased licences previously. I talked to a young lady at TX parks and wildlife and she said it should arrive in time but it didn't matter since it's just a licence and no tag is involved just print out the confirmation page with your number on it after you complete the transaction and you only need that.
No one asked you...if you buy on line you can't buy other unnecessary things you don't need from the sporting goods store silly
I always like buying useless things I don't need
Its how I get in touch with my feminine side...
On Facebook my niece posted pics of an upscale kitchen and bathroom (she sells upscale houses) and 30-40 of her friends chime in and praise the beauty and elegance of the decor. So I suggest the colors are a bit too cool and sterile...
...I have not yet worked up the nerve to go back and see what they said.
OK who is going to party with Bob and I Tues. evening in San Antonio?...Ready(Carl) you are for sure!
I would like to as it is just a thirty minute drive from home but would likely get shot given that, having not been home since Christmas, I am spending four of my sixteen days home off with you guys. Wife and son are more that happy with the hunt but much more, ouch.
I had a couple extra green lights show up, so I'm pretty set. Hoping the rain holds off this weekend so I can do final zero check on a couple of the AR's. And I ordered dies for the .257 Kimber, so I'm hoping I might get lucky & have it ready to go, if Ready wants to use it.
Poboy (Mike) PM'd to let me know he has previous commitments which prevent him from paying a visit. Next time, Mike. You're always a nice addition to camp when you can make it.
1.Up to you 2.No, don't worry about the chiggers. You will not even know that you have them until your back home. Then you will itch for 4 days or so then all itching will go away. Permethrin your cloths before you get here. No worry about any bugs. Boots too. It needs time to dry on cloths and boots. Not your underwear, but the hunting cloths.

Ok ranch manager checked in with me today. Looks like we will be upper 70's and maybe 80 degrees. I likey! Been no shooting on the ranch for a few weeks so piggies should be active for us Some Snakes are already out and by next week with the warm temps they will all be out. If anyone has any food allergies please speak up now so we can let the cook know Arrival on Wed. is any time after 1:00pm They will have someone stationed at the gate so no worries about getting in. Cell service is as follows ATT is good,Verizon OK, Sprint just toss your phone in the brush and forget about it. Bob there is a bobcat or 2 in on the ranch he's been seeing tracks and crap, more outside of the fenced area and he feels thats the better spot for predators but not as many hogs out there

Thanks for taking your time to get this info Dan, you're the man. Looks like maybe (longshot) Bob may get a chance at a Bobcat. Good for him. I did buy a bobcat call so I can drive them to Bob.
Thanks Dan...looks like I'll be outside the fenced in area for the most part. For 4 days if I have to.
Sucks about Sprint. Do they have WI-Fi, Dan?
I looked just for the fun of it. You will have TV. Maybe Roger will bring his broadband card for his computer. I didn't see any listing on WIFI but this place seems to be pretty neat so bet they do if they have sat TV.
Thanks once again Dan, for the WiFi 411. With my Sprint phone being worthless, there is absolutely no way I could go 6 days,(4 business days) without being able to respond to fires that need extinguishing. Plus,I love making money while socializing with the good folks in my circle.
I don't think I'm going to buy snake gaiters either unless someone seriously convinces me of the necessity. I remember Pat telling me on the way down to our dove hunt that he's never seen a rattlesnake in the areas we're hunting. Of course, we shot one the next morning.
Plus, it would make for a great photo op were Ingwe to be the one to suck out the poison while wearing his leopard, butt floss panties.
Hell Dan, if this place has a washer/dryer, I could pack everything I'd need in my Redd Oxx knapsack, thanks to Pat and Patrick.
Gents...I submitted an Accuweather search for Crystal City Tx.for the days 18 thru 22.
Other than some light rain on the Tuesday before we head into camp, we are going to be in the high 80s and low 90s for every day of hunting.
Pigs early am and the cool of the dark after sunset will likely be our best chances for scoring a hog, unless they have time-released feeders and the pigs need to beat the deer and turkey to the easy food stash.
More like Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion, infused with nuclear-ized DEET. I don't know who may have said otherwise earlier in the thread but trust me when I tell you to prepare for some nasty-assed, near invisible, silent biting flies that draw blood and cause grape sized, painful and itchy knots on your body that hang for a week or two. To illustrate, imagine folks with leprosy who hid from others behind some poison ivy bushes.
Chiggers are worse. They'll make you, without any discretion or care whatsoever, scratch your balls in front of nuns and school kids.
Texas' bugs are silent assassins to unprotected skin.

OK: First off you suck for making money whilst having fun.
Second: No worries about you getting bit by a snake-professional courtesy and all....( can you believe he said that??? )
Thirdly- with all that heat I will have frequent fainting spells and need mouth to mouth resuscitation from....well...you know....
...Thirdly- with all that heat I will have frequent fainting spells and need mouth to mouth resuscitation from....well...you know...the bongo
ya might ask the ranch, I'm not sure the bongo is that well trained...
*************
I've also been deluged with PM's regarding the wisdom of giving a lawyer an AR-15. Rest assured I will only give him a 5 round mag, and two cartridges...
I talked to the ranch guide/manager today and asked if I should bring my snake boots or regular ones and with out hesitation he said if you got um definitely bring them He said the snakes will all be out with the weather being so warm and they are ornery. He said down there they don't rattle any more they hiss and strike mid calf

I don't normally dig around in armadillo holes under rock piles while I'm dove hunting.
Snakes aren't interesting unless they are venomous ....kinda like wimmens.
Pythons wanna cuddle...vipers want to kill you...in a good way
When I live in a not so nice area of town I used to sit on the front porch with Mr. Friskers around my neck....black folk were more afraid of him than the vicious pit bull I had chained to the tree
God only knows what the neighbors call me....I know they are afraid of me....kinda like Native Americans used to be afraid of anyone that was crazy....
Ok thermacell, Check. Bug dope, Check. Snake gaiters not gonna happen. Snake shot for my 357, Check. Ear plugs and eye bleach, Check. A couple of bottles of Becky Creek, Check. Hot big breasted blond to spritz me with cold water and fan me when it gets hot,Check.
Bob Our snow is almost gone. You hunting with a ML this year?
WN- I hadn't planned to use a ML for this year's hunt. However, I am planning to bring the long rifle this year, with the possibility of ensnaring the unwary. (Psst! Hey buddy, why don't you try some of this powder. It's so much better than yours.)
I do plan to bring my Sharps to attempt black powdering a pig.
We did lose a lot of inches of snow cover over the last couple of days, but it's certainly not gone. (Just where does the white go when the snow melts?)
I called the guide today he got a feral cat with similar markings of a bobcat. He's gonna cut the tail off, keep it in a cage and release it by your blind for you
Range day today - I'm all dialed-in. Ready shall have his choice of TSX or TTSX projectiles. And if the hogs are really tough, I can dip the tips in green paint, to make 'em armor-piercing.

Patrick...whatever you decide, buddy. Pat brought a 22.250 for me as well so I'd only take advantage of your generosity for an evening. You just want it to be your rifle I use to tag my bobcat, if such an animal actually exists.

okay, I'll bring whichever one shoots best with suitable bullets.

I'm out of hand loads for my 300wm, going to have to buy some factory rounds and sight it in for those.all my reloading equipment has been in storage for 4 yrs. i need to dig it out and set it back up.
I'll probably use the 45-70 I'm going to buy from Ed.
at least there are decent bars & restaurants in DFW airport.
speaking of bars, I'm planning a Becky Run. How much do I need to bring next week?
I went yesterday, one 5th of becky, one 5th of Texas whiskey, made by Firestone and Robertson up here in FW. Not really made by them yet, this is imported from Tn. I think and blended up here. Had to try it. Waiting years for the Tx. brewed.
I drove to Buffalo today and finally saw the new Cabela's I was not supper impressed as I've been to the one in Wheeling WV and that one is spectacular this one looked like a cabelas outlet compared to that one....at any rate they did have what I went for Space Rain light weight rain gear on sale and a light weight jacket that online was out of my size that was also on sale. Gun selection sucked, they had one ruger NO 1 in 30-06 used for $999.00 It looked like some one used it to pound nails and for a crowbar. No .22 ammo, no powder to speak of and very little reloading components
That would be my luck after tagging the one animal that's eluded me my entire hunting career. I've never even seen one and they kill one or two a year off of our leases.
You guys have lots of safe fun! Would love to have been there and a special thanks to Dan for the personal invite. However, driving to Texas is a little much right now. And I have no desire to board a plane. Not to mention all the hacks have us working night and day.
Tom... you know how pitch black it gets in Africa after the sun sets and you're sitting in a leopard blind. While waiting out the arrival of a cat, you also know what it's like to identify most all the animals coming to the water hole, just by the sounds they make, either with their mouths or their hooves. One evening, a giraffe came in and I had no idea it was out there. Shortly thereafter, he leaned over and put his snout into the front opening of our blind, directly in front of me. While pissing myself in utter terror, I grabbed my rifle such that I could have either blown my damn foot off at the ankles or paid a unwanted trophy fee for a giraffe I killed with a shot to his face.
So, you fckers PMing each other behind my back as to your practical joke plans best remember the giraffe story.
Funny Bob, Bobcats have claws, scorpions have a stinger, the old snake can crawl right up into a blind. You have no worries.
Now real life-scorpions hurt but your not going to die. Snakes- The only time I ever see one is by not watching where I'm walking, they get mad if you step on them, Bobcats I have never seen one in the wild either, so I bought a Bobcat call to run them in your direction. OH yes, Docs going to be around so if anything does happen to anyone, bet he can save you. Cash only.
If I've got this straight, I can buy my 5-day license on-line, I'll be able to use my emailed receipt as a temporary license until my permanent one arrives at my home (which will now be after I arrive at the ranch).
Anyone who's done this, are the days you pick printed on the emailed receipt? I'm about to pull the electronic trigger.
No Buc-ee's in San Antonio--------------what one located back towards New Braunfels. Someone coming down I-35 to the hog hunt needs to stop there and get twenty bags of cheese things for Bob. Anyone from like OHIO.
Got rifles pretty well lined up here today. Gusting crosswind made groups challenging, but I decided to load the 60 gr Nosler Partitions for the bull barrel AR, as it seem to like them pretty well, and they will work on either a cat or hog.
A guy next to me was shooting a .338 Lapua Savage with a brake on it. Also shooting about 6 inch groups The .475 Turnbull out-shot it...
License receipt print out...check. 2 gallons bug spray, scorpion and rattlesnake repellant....check. Case of PBR for Joel...check. NutraSlim for Tom...check. Trojan Magnums for Bob, of course...check. Protective netting and stealth game cameras for bed area...check. Cash for Roger to get him out of Mexico...check. Stuffed yorkie run over by a lawnmower (twice) for Tom...check. Autographed pictures of me in court for Dan...check. Bullet proof vest for Jerry...check. 16x20 black and white prints to canvas of Bobby's cell phone shenanigans...check. T-Shirt for Pat...check. Coffee for Doc...very first thing in the am...check.
Been watching the weather forecast ( weather always turns to crap when I go hunting..) and I think I have it figured out....theres at least 4 popular weather sites on the net.....I just surf each one till I find a forecast I like
What a job that must be. To really not know a damn thing and consistently get paid for it......
having been out of the loop these last four days left me unable to timely return pms for which I hereby like to apologize and like so not able to refute any unwarranted attacks on my person of which there are none, which leaves me feeling left out. No even one joke... Just consideration and kindness from FC, that did not go unnoticed, thank you very much), but even so:
I file a request to the Poobah - to swiftly make available a "hurt feelers report form".
GFYs all and get it out of your systems. We meet soon and Stone Cutter is already afraid.
There was the time in TN when I showed up with a bottle of Becky. I opened it, passed it around, took a splash myself, went off & did something else, turned around 15 minutes later and it was all gone.
If for no other reason, the fact that we will be conducting this shindig a short drive from the well from which Rebecca Creek Whiskey springeth, I cannot fathom how Rockchucker can miss this.
Just back from the range. I have not shot the 7x57 in at least 3 years (the oryx was last), threw the QD'd scope on and tossed 3 in 3/4" right at 2" high dead center at 100. This with 140 AB's. Done. Decided my foul weather piece will be my CZ 527 Carbine 7.62x39. With Wolf 122 gr copper jacketed HP's it kept 3 inside 1 1/2". Done. Also found some 44 Special loads with the 250 gr Keith (Lyman) at ~1000 fps using HS-6. Will bring along the 3" Smith 624 for close in pig combat.
Yeah, but I'm still tickled about spending the week with my kid. We're leaving out tomorrow and taking our time with the road trip. If all goes well, we'll make San Antonio on Tuesday and spend a little time bumming around there.
I'll shoot you a text and maybe we can catch up with you guys for lunch or supper.
Man am I enjoying the weather here in Boerne. Shorts today, hit the range with two of my boys, toyed with the Mach 1 timing with youngest Tony and gave it a run , and made lasagna that is still in the oven and a few martinis have been enjoyed. Now I am counting the friggin minutes to retirement. Really looking forward to the trip, really.
I am worrying that I will be the only one with walnut... and gin.
I'm bringing a Kimber Classic Select and was debating about what else I was going to bring for inclement weather. Decided to dust off the Ruger boat paddle 7mm mag. Haven't had it out in years and figured it needed some fresh air.
hoping my fingers get a little better in the next couple of days. literally sanded the skin off my finger tips yesterday grouting tile. maybe my finger prints will be gone. sumbitchs are throbbing today, could hardly wipe my ass this morning.

damnittt!!!! if ya can't git on a trigger Roger, you pick it, I'll smoke it.
I wish all you folks a great and safe time , wished I was joining you all!! Maybe next time ifin you all will let me in. P.S Say Hi to Doc Rocket for me as we both stated life in the same part of the world. Cheers NC
i'm going to bring a gallon and a quart of 150 proof moonshine, a half gallon of 110 proof, a half gallon of 110 proof strait up no sugerhead pore moonshine and some of my bourbon.
Sam calls it liquid cocaine, i dont drink enough of it to know.
Thanks Dan for what you have done to make this happen. Dont know what I can bring from Missouri but I will stop and pick up a bottle of Becky Creek and some beer. Im a Coors light/Busch lite guy myself what do you fella's drink?
In my house before this one, grout was put in place then the guy had to work like hell to get it in shape before it was dry. Covering too much of an area make you work fast. Get healed. I'm bringing my 45/70 with a peep site if you don't get yours, your welcome to try it.
hope edm has thar 45-70 ready or i'll have to use the 300 rum it never misses.
I found zero loaded ammo but will run 50 of my usual using the 350 gr Hornady over 58 grs of 3031. Would run right at 2000 fps. I have not shot the gun in 10 years so you may have to play a bit at the range, hence the 50 rounds. Promise I will load martini free.
Change of plans on the way to town to fill up and wash the Lincoln the Waterpump went out. So since my old truck is wore out Im am stealing the wife's car. So now Ill be rolling in a Kia Soul. So if you see a fat guy in a car that looks like Im wearing it as shirt that will be me. Im pulling out about 5 or 6 in the morning see you all Wednesday.
Bob and I are here in SA We have a cool bad ass Prius
I'm in Marble Falls now.
Have been in TX since Sunday AM, spending a couple days visiting Campfire members; a long story. Also a long drive with the odometer showing 1600 miles after leaving the snowy shores of Superior on Friday.
Will be at the ranch Wed pm, assuming the creeks don't rise.
Joe, I just located a Bass Pro with a Dick's right next door up I10 18 minutes from the airport. I want to wish everyone a safe trip and Roof and I will see you tomorrow.
Just made it to San Antonio. Staying in some flea bitten Motel 8. Brought all my stuff in and got the pistola loaded. If I dont make it tomorrow you might have them look for my body In North San Antonio off of I35 kinda sketchy around here. Oh yea Texas Traffic sucks big hairy balls. See you guys tomorrow.
And on the directions I found the Ranch on Google maps. I back tracked it to Crystal city and it looks like there directions are pretty close. If you hit the end of the road on 1668 you went to far. Last Right before 1668 ends.
Myself, Isaac ,ltppowell, crimsontide, tide jr,Ready, and Birdwatcher all had a great dinner on the river walk. Iron bender also joined us with his Mrs. for a couple cocktails.
Heading out the door in a half hour or so for a last bit of shopping then to pick up Tom and Carl. I am thinking lunch in Devine and ranch arrival around 1 or so.

I just loaded my daughters & fiance's/husbands onto a plane in San Angelo to fly back up to Wisco. Got to get some work done at the clinic today, wrapping up some charts etc, then should be able to hit the road at sunrise tomorrow. That'll put me at the ranch around noon.
If anybody needs any last-minute items after y'all get settled in and want me to pick 'em up, leave me a text or post it here. I'll check in around 6 tomorrow morning.
We holed-up in Tex-arrrrrgh-kana last night, and are wrappin' up breakfast in Mt. Pleasant now. The plan is to hit the ranch < supper tonight. Safe travels, all.FC
See how you are? Not 40 minutes from my ranch and you don't stop in to say "howdy".
Of course, I'm not there, but that is not important right now.
Here's some pics from 2 days ago. I had to leave the party abruptly last evening due to a work situation, so I don't have many pics. I expect others will follow through today and tomorrow.
EdM on the left, and ltppowell on the right. Pat had just said something unprintable...
This'n is a shot of Carl & me after shooting clays. He's holding the L.C.Smith 16 gauge I just bought, it's got 20-gauge Briley tubes in it. The gun I'm holding is my Ugartachea 20 gauge, a very light 20-gauge gun. Both guns seem to bust clays pretty good. Quite a bunch of us shot clays yesterday in between stuffing our faces and sitting in the blinds waiting for pigs to show up.
Here's one of me & the Poobah. He imparted much wisdom to the turdlike fellows who attended this here shindig.
I heard six pigs was the total. Don't know if anyone went out today, even though it was the last hunting day. Last night they got a couple trucks stuck. I only had one opportunity, and missed him
Dan just advised that he could have thumped a nice eland...
Makes sense. He is pretty good looking, DVD is. Wait, you said THUMPED. Never mind.
I am praying to the Almighty Overseer of All Blessed Drunken Acts of Magical and Eternal Greatness that someone choked out, or at least knuckled up, squared off with and boxed with the ostrich during the trip. Such a brilliant opportunity for immortality, that. An epic bout stemming from blackout caliber drunks and the offer/wager/acceptance deal of a dare? The man who would be king stuff. Oh, the image... FUGG YEAH!
Get home safe, y'all. Looking forward to pics and recollections.
I'm a low life for not having a video of that, but I don't. I've got it in my head with the one of his first deer though, and I cherish them both.
I do regret not capping the three little piglets that were with the sow he shot. They'd have gone good in a crock pot, I think. Or maybe baked like cornish game pigs....

That would have been Rockchucker, had he shown up this year.
Dang Patrick, don't you know more Becky makes you aim better?
Possibly. Judging the wind was the problem, however. I held off them too much. The bullet strike we found in the dirt suggested it went where I aimed it.
We were warned the ostrich could be a mean fugger, and in fact he chased a couple people at different times. I heard they are eventually going to dispatch him, with prejudice.
Final tally was 7 pigs killed 4 missed Others saw pigs but no shots Everyone who attended was great and I just want to thank you all for attending and making this a great time! The ranch manager was impressed with our group and said we where one if his best ever. Unfortunately I have to sit in San Antonio airport for3 more hours before my journey begins.... But it's better than the long drive many members have to endure
Thanks again, Dan, for getting on the stick and putting this together for us. Lawson and I made it home about 14:30 yesterday. I ended up in the rack about 18:00 and slept like a rock.
Hope your lay over passes fast and your flight uneventful.
By the way, we stopped at 2 different Buc ee's, on the way through Texas. What a place! Pickled Quail eggs, grills, yeti coolers and bar b que sammiches. Not to mention the illustrious beaver nuggets.
Just arrived home. Road was mess getting out. Wonder who got stuck. Had a great time Dan. Met many members who I had seen on the board. Great guys. Had some fine weapons to look at. One thing we do have is many avid shotgunners it seems. Some really good shots. Found out my Model 11 Rem will shoot straight and hit the target by several different members. Bet the group fired at least 1,000 rounds. Didn't see a hog while hunting. Saw many African type animals, many dove, lots of ducks, lots of Duck. They like corn it seems. Have pics. but can't post them. So I get to look at them and see if any good ones came out.
Did stop at a Buc-ee's on the way home on I-35. Had at least 100 pumps. Half of the being used. Went inside and got some Beaver Nuggets and a taco to eat on the way home. Interesting place. Store had to be at lease 20,000 or more SQ FT.
Come on guy's you have all those pictures and no names , we need names to go with the pictures!! Hope every body made or will make it home safely. Wished I could have joined you, as there is not too many years left in these old bones. Cheers NC
FC and I are in Texarkana for the night. Got to make miles all day tomorrow and no time to visit anyone on the way.
Dan, thanks again for setting this up. It was great in spite of the weather. And thanks to you and Pat for cooking up Roger's shrimp and fish. Thank you, Roger. I wouldn't have said this in front of Lois, but y'all cook better than her and she's pretty good.
Speaking of that ostrich, I'm pretty sure that he and and his buddy aren't going to survive the change in ranch ownership for very long. If Lois had had a pistol the other day, we would have drumsticks for supper that night.
Cal74: I-35N sucked HARD 'til we got well past West, TX (no time to stop for kolaches ) Tide + Wtxj: Buc-ee's is a surprisingly neat place. Their bathrooms are as clean, as the one we found in LaPryor was nasty. I swear, I've never been in a barn that gross. Tjm: the food was great all around, with Roger & Pat's seafood feast being easily the best I've ever had. Theretofore, I had thought that Snapper was just a punchline.
Great company, as always. The hogs took some finding, for sure. And this hunt just might be the catalyst for me to get off my cheap ass and buy a range finder.
Ready seemed to fit in just fine. I'm not sure he can officially be certified as Turdlike, yet - perhaps the Poobah can weigh in.
And Bristoe, to the best of my recollection, no one chit their britches while trying to light a fart at this years 24HCF hog hunt.
Made it to Wichita, took almost 13 hours to get here and about 10 1/2 hours of that was heavy traffic. Figure that was an extra 2 - 2 1/2 hours because of traffic.
Saw three people take the ditch right in front of us because they'd ride right up the next guys a$$. If you've got more than a car length ahead of you, someone has to cut in.
Anyways, good to meet everyone and shoot the chit with many of you. Once I get settled in at home, I'll post a few pics. Didn't take the best pics of my pig as I thought I'd have some in better light.
You couldn't pay me enough to ever get on I-35 South of Oklahoma City again. [bleep] idiots..... People in the ditch all over because they ride others asses. Than its 85 to 60 to a stand still back to 80-85 and than stopped.
Cal- I must have been on I-35 about the same time as yourself. I avoided the road in TX, but got on it just south of the OK border. Just a bit north of Davis, traffic came to a standstill, stretching for three miles up a hill and out of sight.
After that, things went south, literally and figuratively.
Well dang, it was a treat to get to visit with those I did on the way in I think the last time I was on the Riverwalk was a Campfire doves hunt some years back
I just managed to snap a few pictures with my phone during the trip. On the way down, we swung over and visited with Ed and his bride on their beautiful farm. While we were there, we were able to feed the horses with Ed, and he took time to teach Lawson and me a few things about horses that neither of us knew, not having ever spent time around them to speak of.
Our next stop was San Antonio, where we joined up with Bob, Dan and Pat. We also got to meet Ironbender and his lovely bride, and we got to meet Birdwatcher, who is the genuine article when it comes to knowledge of San Antonio and its' history. It was obvious talking with him, that he really loves his home town.
On Wednesday morning, Pat was gracious enough to guide Lawson and I on a tour of the Alamo.
Apparently, last week was Spring Break for a bunch of area schools. There was a line waiting to tour the Alamo, but it moved along quickly enough.
I was pleased to see a list of do's and don'ts posted in the area where the line waited to get in. Gentlemen will remove their covers. There will be no loud talking. No photography inside, etc. The last line said "No unauthorized weapons, CHL holders are excepted."
I gotta say, I was thoroughly pleased with the attitude of Texans from the time we drove in, till the time we drove out. Been a long time since I saw such level headed thinking on the part of so many.
During the tour, I was proud to see the names of 13 Kentuckians who were volunteers at the Alamo.
As soon as we checked in at the ranch, we were directed to the range to check the zero on our rifles. Interestingly, both rifles needed two or three clicks of adjustment to put them back on the money, so to speak. Not sure what that was about, but it was nno big undertaking.
There was a bit of discussion as to whether we would be hunting on Wednesday night, and the decision was made to go hunt. I'm certainly glad we did, as Tide Jr was able to take his first pig ever.
We were sitting in one of the ground blinds, watching a group of whitetails in a sendero, when a sow showed up. She had three little piglets in tow, and they were feeding between us and the whitetails.
There was no discussion as to whether he would shoot her or not, but I did spend time whispering to him about letting her clear a few little mesquite limbs that were between us and her, and also making sure the deer were clear from behind her in case of a miss or pass through. I think that the extra time it took for the shot to develop gave Jr. more time to relax and breathe before he actually broke the shot.
When his little rifle did bark, the sow dropped like a sack of sausage, kicked 3 or 4 times and was still. The little ones scattered, along with the whitetails and we stepped off the distance and collected his trophy. 77 steps, and the 125 grain Ballistic Tip produced an exit, which mildly surprised me. Definitely looking forward to deer season here at home now, there will be more shots taken with the 300 Blackout.
When you have two Kentucky boys who don't get out all that much, most anything will be a wonderment. Take for instance, Jackrabbits.
Jackrabbits only barely resemble cottontails, and they were everywhere on this ranch. It is no wonder that rattlesnakes were in abundance. Although, Roger and Poobah both opined that jackrabbit was not edible, I'm guessing rattlesnakes don't care about that.
After the first evening's hunt, we got clearance to smoke jackrabbits at will. Just so happened that we had a 10/22 in the truck, so Jr. made a run at the Jackrabbits.
He informed me at the end of his jackrabbit safari that they are fairly oblivious to 22 LR, unless you shoot them through the grape. I'll have to take his word for it, as I didn't shoot any, but it was duly noted.
Well...I just had a great time. Too many things to list initially. Good to see old friends and make new ones. As luck would have it, we received 1/3 of the areas annual rainfall in two days, making it a little squishy and spring break traffic was tough. Central and south Texas are big destinations. I made it home in about 8 hours, which was good time, but didn't stop but for diesel and a sandwich. See why I hate driving through Houston, Joel?
Trace bought me that rifle for Christmas. I picked up a Timney trigger for it from 7x57Steve and mounted a 2x7 Leupold. It is ridiculously easy to load for and recoil is nearly non existent with the 125 grain bullets.
For hunting out of those ground blinds, that short barrel length was perfect.
Hoping that there will be a bumper crop of groundhogs around here this year. I'd like to do quite a bit more shooting with it.
Special thanks to Rodger for bring 15 lbs of fresh jumbo shrimp, wahoo and red snapper fillets. Pat and I prepared the feast and we scored big points with Lois the cook for our help Pat grilled every thing up over a mesquite fire
Scopebite416 and I survived the long, wet, drive back home. The traffic around Austin proved to be just as bad as it was on the way there. Rained all the way until we got well into Arkansas.
Thanks, Dan for all your work setting up the hunt. Special thanks to Roger, Dan, and Pat for the excellent seafood supper! Everyone 'pigged out'...well, at least at chow time.
It was good to reunite with old friends from last year and get to know the new friends I met this year.
Major props to Dan for putting together such a fine hunt with fine folks, and with such a short window.
You did good Dan,real good.
Pretty neat to spend a few days with like minded good folks in such a great state. The only thing I missed out on was Buck'ees. Good thing anyways...I'd have had to pay a schitload for shipping.
As an aside, that's the most carbs I've eaten in 9 months combined. I should have saved myself a lot of time and just stuck Lois' great cooking to my ass. I knocked myself right out of ketosis my first 5 minutes there.
Major, major props to the guy who brought the peanut M&Ms.
Lastly, if I knew 85% of this nation's 17 year olds were just like Lawson, I'd rest easy as to our next generation. Solid, well rounded young man. Has about an inch or two on his old man, too. In fact, every one of the new guys were great additions to the camp.
I thought I could spin a metaphor with the best of them but I don't hold a candle to Jerry.
Ed...I hope you're feeling better.
7mato...can't believe you and your Kia got off the property. Pleasure meeting you.
The Great Poobah is in fact The Great Poobah. Got the pleasure of spending an evening in the blind with him. Great Guy and his McFlame .223 AI is a dang nice little piece.
Gunner500 is funny as hell. I think he may be the original Larry the cable guy.
TexnCal - Pat is a knowledgeable man but I wont hold that against him. He brought a lot of AR-s to look at. Spent a couple of evenings in the blind with Pat had good time he taught me a lot about the Brush Country.
CrimsonTide is one hell of Pistolera you dont want him shooting at you under 250 yds. Nice guy as well
Lil Tide is nice respectful young man. Glad he killed the first hog. Joel and his Momma should be proud.
Isaac was a pleasure meeting You as well. The wife was not happy with all the caliche mud on her KIA this morning. That lil sucker is beast in the mud.
Doc Rocket brought along a Nice lil double rifle. Points like a shotgun. Sorry you had to leave early Doc.
WTXJ_ Gordon. We both arrived at the same time so we got roomed together. He is lucky he is hard of hearing as he didnt have to listen to me snore. Great and kind guy.
Whelennut,Scopebite and all the others from the Great White north was a pleasure meeting and talking with you all. Gentlemen one and all.
Mato, it was very good to make your acquaintance. I was envious of your overalls the entire time. Next hunt will definitely find me in my favorite bibs.
Mato, it was very good to make your acquaintance. I was envious of your overalls the entire time. Next hunt will definitely find me in my favorite bibs.
CT--totally agree. I think I'll go to Fleet Farm and get me a pair. My dad wore striped bibs 6 1/2 days a week!
BTW--Mato. Thanks for the primers. My revolvers are going to get a workout!
Well I just got in the door after an uneventful flight. Will post some pics later.
I can only echo what others have said, many thanks to Dan for the quick manner in which he organized this...as others said, it was good to reconnect and make a few new friends. Another BIG +1 to Lawson...I didn't expect any less from CT.
Pats cooking was hands down the best, Rogers kindness was too!
Because of the weather we had a little more time to talk and I was Impressed ( in a good way...) by the brain power in the group. As hard as Gunner tried to hide behind a redneck facade, he couldn't help but show himself as the thinker he is. Thanks to EdM for my ride to and from San Antonio..and thank to Pat for pointing out how tough Texas pigs are.....He feels my TTSX bounced off one, and in retrospect, thats the best explanation with!
..and thanks to Pat for pointing out how tough Texas pigs are.....He feels my TTSX bounced off one, and in retrospect, thats the best explanation with!
I banged my head on the blind getting in it, that's my excuse explanation
Special thanks to Rodger for bring 15 lbs of fresh jumbo shrimp, wahoo and red snapper fillets. Pat and I prepared the feast and we scored big points with Lois the cook for our help Pat grilled every thing up over a mesquite fire
I would like to thank everyone for their generous hospitality. I really enjoyed myself despite the pig situation. The exotics were awesome to see outside of a zoo. I enjoyed hearing about all of the hunting experiences. You guys are real hunters. Even though most of the talk of guns and ammo flew over my head, I learned a lot. Everyone was kind and excepting, even Tom, because he doesn't give schitt. There wasn't as much alcohol abuse as I imagined. I guess it was the schedule we kept. I really enjoyed meeting all of you. What a diverse group. Sorry I had so much trouble with the names, it was too much info all at once.
Roof, thanks for the invite. I hope you tolerated my snoring OK.
Dan, thanks for all of the hard work, I'm sure it was time consuming. I really appreciate it.
A special thanks goes out to Roger, Dan and Pat for the shrimp dinner. Fantastic.
Mato, after I ran the 5 mile mud bog in my 2 wheel drive rental car, I thought about you in the Kia and thought you'd never make it. Glad to hear you were alright. I was lucky, I had Gunner watching my back on the way out in his pick up. That was a little nerve racking when you have to catch a fight. If I had gotten stuck, it would have been my luck if he didn't have a chain or a strap to pull me out.
Gunner, I bet you were dieing back there when I had it slideways a few times. I had to keep up momentum. That's pretty slick stuff. I had Roof pretty puckered up in the passenger seat. Once we got on paved roads, I hope I wasn't driving too fast for you. I was just mak'n tracks even though I couldn't see. My head lights were covered in mud.
Poobah, even though you don't give a schitt, you're alright in my book.
CT, you've got a fine young man there and a good marksman as well. He was knocking the crap out of the clays, especially for the first time out.
Ready, I really enjoyed the slide show of your hunt with Joe in Alaska. Very enlightening.
Special thanks to Rodger for bring 15 lbs of fresh jumbo shrimp, wahoo and red snapper fillets. Pat and I prepared the feast and we scored big points with Lois the cook for our help Pat grilled every thing up over a mesquite fire
Oh My!!!!!!!
They were bacon wrapped as well. I poured melted butter over mine and could hardly finish it.
Another fun bit was meeting Carl ( Ready)...our contingent from Germany. It was hard not to notice that Carl was deadly with whatever weapon he put in his hands.Something I for sure couldn't say, as my shotgunning was up to its usual dismal level, and Im still nursing and whining about a sore shoulder I forgot about having till the 12 gauge went off... Pat was plain scary good with his bent barrel shotgun...I hope the one in whatever squad car he gets in is bent...
By popular request I have researched and found a pic of the incomparable Jaqueline Bisset...
A discussion in camp one night brought back fond memories of Jaqueline in " The Deep" wearing a soaking wet T-shirt...I labored long and hard to find and post this pic....
Payton who was my guide and is also the owners son. Said that this was the easiest group he had ever worked with. He said usually the spend hours at sight in time with just a small group. He said "You guys know what you are doing everyone is either spot on or takes a couple of adjustments to get spot on".
This Carl 'Ready' shooting I think TexnCal's .257 Kimber beauty of a gun. Of course the Poobah and I believe Bullshooter with the Red earmuffs.
And Ingwe is right Carl could shoot anything you threw at him and shoot it well. He told fine stories as well. I think I got him hooked on Coors Light beer though.
Ingwe and Gordon shooting Gordons fine S&W custom shop .357.
CrimsonTide and his 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger America. We had a good talk on the Creedmoor.
Looks like we got TideJr on the far right Gunner500 in camo. Ready is shooting with Crimsontide in the orange hat. Cant for the life of me remember who the other fellow is. Someone step up and remind me.
More pistol work here. Follically Challenged in the green hat another fine guy.
Roof? I believe with a Jack Rabbit .223 will get there attention. We fed him to the Gator.
Rain we actually had ducks swimming under our feeder on the last night we hunted.
This little fella dropped in unannounced. He literally fell off the roof of the blind right onto my hand with a nice wet plop. You probably heard me squeal like a girl. I threw him off and he crawled around in front of me. I took his pic and then flung him out the window to fend for himself in the lake of water.
Solving the worlds problems.
Gunner500 is convinced that this bird wanted to rape him. I dont think the birds are quite that stupid.
Some Aoudad Sheep paid me and Ingwe a visit on the last hunt. The little ones put on a hell of a show.
Well I got the next to last seat on my plane flight from San Antonio to Chicago and then on to Mpls. This made the trip back exciting since I had purchased the ticket 6 weeks ago and had checked in at the airport three hours before my flight time. The only reason I was able to board the over-sold plane was that United Airlines offered $100, the $300 and then $500 travel vouchers to those willing to surrender their tickets. Five people took them up on their offer. Arriving in Minneapolis was also a surprise - I left the warmth (and rain) of Texas for 6 inches of falling snow in Minnesota.
The nominal trophy fee on the stritch was $3k. I was tempted to offer them $1k on the last day, but finally talked myself out of it. I did wind wind up yelling at him, once, as he was edging closer to me.

3k. Man, that is just pocket change for the Poohbah.
Well you look up to the ostrich and he bites and would kick. Hell he got out on the rifle range while we were shooting. Had to stop and chase him off ( the guide did ) He/she was in a fighting mood.
I am guessing that this trip, a wonderful one with many thanks to Dan, will cost me a chunk of change on the Sheep River chasing Dall sheep with Carl (Ready)...
Thanks Dan for taking the time to set this trip up. Was a very neat lodge. We all need one. I think 24 bedrooms, each with it's own bath area, two queen size beds, TV ( was never turned on) and a really nice trophies from Adams lifetime of hunting. What a meal Roger furnished, Pat and Dan cooked. Couldn't ask for any more. Fun to meet many who are on this site in person.
Oh yea, we had a lot of beer drinker, not whiskey drinkers. So there for I came back with two bottles of Texas made whiskey. I think Pat even had some left over. Joel tried real hard but his return home was earlier then expected.
I brought four fifths and a handle of Becky Creek. I think someone else brought a couple, and I wound up bringing back the handle and two fifths. I think other folks brought a variety of other adult beverages, including some clear firewater type stuff. I used it to treat my head injury, when Doc wasn't looking...

When the ostrich got out on the rifle range that should have been seen as a divine sanction and the ostrich summarily shot.

I think Derrick, the ranch manager, has 1st dibbs on the ostrich....unless his wife wants to pull the trigger.
The dust has settled a bit here, been working like a slave catching up a bit on the farm, where to start, it was good to see all you guys again and meet some new friends.
Special shout out to Dan and Pat for the put together and cooking, and Bob for showing us all how to dress at a hunting camp, although we'll never be that cool.
STX Roger went above and beyond with the shrimp, fish AND drink, my bellies still warm.lol
Enjoyed the cranial 'enlightment' from my 'blind buddy' Tom [tjm], nice hunting and visiting with you Sir, conversation from a true gentleman always does me good.
The 24hr campfire continues to attract like minded good folks at these gatherings regardless of the attendees geographical location, it was a sincere pleasure sharing a camp, laughs, drink and eats with all you fine fellas.
He brought several really nice revolvers on this trip, most of them tuned by his & my favorite S&W revolver mechanic, Denny Reichard of Sand Burr Gun Ranch in Rochester, IN. Tom & I have been corresponding here on the 'Fire for several years, and it was a pleasure to finally meet in person.

Yep!!
Derrick told us that he has informed the ranch owner that the first thing he's gonna do when the ranch sells next week/month is kill that damn ostrich. He did actually shoot it with a round of snake-shot on Thursday afternoon, too, as it hassled with several of us down at the fishin' hole...
It was a mean sonofabitch, chased several of us down. It came at me once and I charged back at it and made it back off a step, but then it came on again. I didn't want to have to shoot it, so I beat feet behind some trucks and it forgot about me.

Lootenant Pat keeps claiming that he's not that good on targets, but that he's a "fair game shot". Sheesh... last fall I watched him shoot 15 doves straight one evening. That's beyond being a "fair game shot" by a damn sight!
But no fears about him needing a bent-barrel 870 for his squad car... he rides a desk these days, but I've heard he's got a deal with the department armorer to keep him well-stocked with crooked 870's...
Scopebite416 and I survived the long, wet, drive back home. The traffic around Austin proved to be just as bad as it was on the way there. Rained all the way until we got well into Arkansas.
It was good to reunite with old friends from last year and get to know the new friends I met this year.
It was a pleasure sharing a blind with you, Paul, even though we didn't get to pull a trigger. Hope to do it again next year.

Pleasure was all mine, Doc. Too bad ya had to leave so soon. That green light of yours sure was the cat's ass!
When I figure out how to post pics again, I'll share the ones of that owl taking a bath in the pond. That was crazy!
It's hard to add to what's been posted, but I'll throw up some pictures & anecdotes, anyway.
Firstly, sharing a car ride of 2,771 miles with tjm was a pleasure. I know I had to have given him a sore knee from all the times I made him stomp his imaginary passenger-side brakes on I-35N, but we made it home in fine shape, and shared many excellent stories.
If I recall, Gunner500 claims to be a cattle rancher, but I'm convinced he's an English professor. The man is quite simply the Michelangelo of the Metaphor. His account of his lone attempt at babysitting left me in tears for 20 minutes.

Ready made quite the impression on the regulars. He seems to fit in well, no matter the crowd. I was expecting, however, that he would arrive in camp wearing an authentic 38 liter Texas Cowboy Hat, so we could pose together in international garb. He assures me that he will be procuring one and taking it back to Germany. I'll believe it when I see a picture of him wearing one midst a group of stone-faced Forsters.
He made a good show of adjusting to the the... unorthodox... hunting methods employed. Nothing like in the Old Country, but he made do:
The ostriches were sneaky bastids, indeed. They'd hide in the truck, & stick their heads through the sunroofs:
But I had 'em in the palm of my hand:
Thanks to Tex n Cal loaning me some .38 ostrich shot, I felt well prepared:
An no, too much cannot be said about the eats. Here's Dan the fire man setting things up for the fish fellas:
And here's Pat showing off textbook shooting stance. Hey, whatever it is, it works like a friggin' charm!
I used the excellent 7-08 that Mickey Coleman & Karnis put together for me. It seemed fitting to bring it on this trip.
I believe there were just shy of 5 miles of "dirt" road we needed to traverse to reach pavement. Ready & tjm were concerned that my slick-tired and heavily-laden Yukon would sink in that muck, but we made it. The running boards even had souvenirs of that exciting journey:
On Friday morning Doc and I heard water splashing behind our blind. At first we thought it was just some ducks. Finally we turned around and couldn't believe our eyes. An owl was taking a bath in the pond!

Joe:
Like I said at your house last night, it's HARD to be in a car for two days with someone and then another two days again, and still be on speaking terms at the end of the trip.
Not only were we on speaking terms, but my voice was hoarse from all the talking we did. You are a superb cross-country companion, my friend.
JW (Doc Rocket):
It was indeed a pleasure to finally meet you face to face, too, and I look forward to seeing some of your fine S&W revolvers when next we meet. I've got a nice 29-2 to show you thatI bought from Ashley (Denny smirking off to the side the whole time, while she beguiled me) with an action even smoother than the 629.
Like I posted the other evening, the usual suspects in this posse went above and beyond and made this whole thing not only possible with a bunch of hard work , but they were the center and the catalyst of all the fine conversation and camaraderie that we enjoyed. I just can't imagine not continuing our acquaintances in the future.
One of the highlights of this trip for me was the Saturday night cocktail hour with Derek and Lois. Spasiba, you two.
I also learned something on this trip that I never knew about southwest Texas. It's sticky when wet.
By popular request I have researched and found a pic of the incomparable Jaqueline Bisset... ... A discussion in camp one night brought back fond memories of Jaqueline in "The Deep" wearing a soaking wet T-shirt... Is this the one you guys were thinking of? ...
Poobah- Is your google-fu weakening?
I suspect the movie poster below is the image recalled by those of us in the discussion group. --Bob .
Thank you for a great time at ADL7. Fully intend to be back, where ever the next 24HCF hunt is.
Checking in from the Red Roof Inn in San Antonio, my flight leaves in 2 hours.
@ ingwe
thank you for your concern. I am well, if saddend by the happenings in the Alps. My wife tells me, German Airline Traffic is in turmoil between strikes and the crash, so we will see, when i get home.
I will check in with stories and pictures upon arrival.
for what it is worth, FC from Ohio coined the phrase of "jack rabbits needing to break out the snorkel pretty quick", which, at the time, put me out of the hunt for about five, chuckling.
Y'all
made it home. Lets put it this way - a clusterfistfukk. Rebooked through Denver, onto a fully booked 747 stooled for Asian service, getting a middle seat. Pillow was used to rest my arms on my chest, thereby sucking in my shoulders (8.5 hours of this - ouch).
I laugh hard, when, thous positioned, I came across the FLY-ROBICS video...
Layover in Frankfurt, got into Berlin after 26 hours total traveltime - to find out my bag had not made it.
You guessed it - the page with the car key.
So, after finding the Baggage Lost Station, it in itself lost in some forsaken corner of the airport, with signs pointing in any direction but to, I got ahold of my wife, to meet me at the train and take me home. Due to a misunderstanding she got on and I got off...
Home now - and already swamped with local petty problems...

Carl- FC has a delightful sense of humor, fortunately for myself. When we were shooting clay birds I loaned him my O/U shotgun, which is European-styled with two triggers. I gave him a quick briefing on running it, but failed to notice that he put his index finger on the front trigger and middle finger on the rear. His first trial on a clay naturally resulted in a Ba-Boom that got the attention of the onlookers. I was afraid that the gun had malfunctioned and doubled, but we quickly diagnosed the 2-finger cause. FC kept his smile, started loading the bottom barrel singly, and went on to smack a string of birds, one after another. I suspect the two-trigger introduction with a target-loaded 12-bore was better than than with one of gunner's big double rifles.
My Merkel SxS certainly appreciated being handled with your fine Teutonic skills. On a couple of shots you showed astonishingly fast reflexes. Be well, Carl. --Bob
Gunner: my damn shoulder is still killing me from shooting your shotgun. I think I wish to revise me story and say thats why I missed that pig on the last night....
I take the blame for the Poobahs miss. I was holding the green lights on the hogs I am sure I did something wrong to cause the miss. There is no way that The Poobah and The McFlame AI could in anyway miss something as big as those pigs.
I wish someone could of seen me make the mud road run in the KIA it was epic. I will no longer worry about my wife being able to get in and out of town in bad weather she has no excuse that car will go like hell.
I will send you my 12 bore Ugartechea slug gun with properly regulated 1 Oz Brennerke slugs. Throws multiple pairs inside 2" at 50 yards right on top of the front sight. A proven hog/deer culler.
The time was a pleasure. I need a bit of time, like an Alaskan brown bear hunt for 2016 and my pending retirement, to sort out life but would really enjoy a Dall sheep hunt very soon after. We will be in touch, trust me on this...

Ed,
the pleasure was all mine. I wish you well and know you will be able to make everthing come together for you and your family. We will be in touch, I know that. If you let me tag along on a future sheep hunt of yours, it would be my pleasure
I'll be taking the #1 38-55 to Tennessee this April to check out another hog hunting place(hopefully one that actually keeps their word). Will report back on my findings.
But you really are welcome to use the rifle again whenever you choose.
Gunner, glad to see you made it back to the farm OK. How'd you like my mud boggin skills when we were leaving?
, I just twisted that little Z71 in 4 wheel high and tried to keep, I had two thoughts:
What lit a fire under those mens butts? That cat's driven over A LOT of snow and ice before.
, saw the 90 degree shuffle.
That thing only had 2 wheel drive. I had to keep up momentum. When I got it in the deep stuff, it was slowing down even though I had it hammered down.
When I drove outta there Friday night the rain had only been falling for a couple hours, and I was amazed at how greasy-treacherous the ranch road was already. Shoulda thought to tell you guys... it musta been a mess by Sunday.
I thought Bob was gonna back hand me on the way out. I kept yelling at him "don't slow down, don't stop" as we were bogging down and fish tailing. Many had left before us and it was rutted up pretty good. Glad I talked him into getting the Ram pick up with Hemi and 4 wheel drive instead of the Prius
It was pretty greasy by Sat afternoon, too. I had 4x4, of course, but it was still squirrely in the low spots, given my highway tires. I finally got annoyed & locked the rear differential, which helped somewhat.
Yes, I had an exciting time navigating through the muck and mud in that red rental Mazda Mirage. I basically tried to keep one wheel on the shoulder and my momentum up as I twisted, slid and slipped my way back from the ranch to the county gravel road. It was a challenge but that little car seemed to float through/over the mud and I got out without a lot of trouble - I was surprised.
Wife threw some of the pig i killed on the hunt into the crockpot with some Sweet Baby Rays and some Tex-Joy. Let it simmer all day and we had it for dinner. Pretty good stuff. Seemed a little tougher than farm raised pig but I guess that is to be expected all in all we liked it.
Was only 4 inches of rain water and a little mud with a real hard base under that. Is different in a one wheel drive car though with street tires. I was in my run down old Jeep so I just drove out and wondered who was going to get stuck.. None did so I guess the group did fine.
[...] I wish someone could of seen me make the mud road run in the KIA it was epic. I will no longer worry about my wife being able to get in and out of town in bad weather she has no excuse that car will go like hell.
Charles, it was very good to get to meet, talk and shoot with you. I had no doubt about your little Kia in the Mud. Small car, short wheel distance, front wheel drive is a combination many use here in Germany.
I bet, it was, Tom, with the motor on the driving axle. They ran one of those for ages in Antarctica on the research station. The air-cooled motor helped a lot in that climate...
I liked your comment about you and Joe being still on speaking terms after a round road trip of 2400 miles. FC is just that kind of guy, is he not?
Heck, we still speak after 14 days in a two man tent, that, comfortably, only sleeps one.
Looks like I have a fair load ( ) of bullets left over from my 450-400 double rifle days. A box of 50 300 gr Hornady FP's and 110 400 gr Hornady DGX's. Let me know if you are interested. I fly out Monday AM but should be back in a couple of weeks and can throw them in the mail then.
reporting back from the old country. Had a great night out. 43° F, steady wind, half moon, high, thin cloud cover and a untilled 50 ha cornfield of last years...
Sat at dusk and two hours into the night with no movement save for a hare.
Took to my feet then looping around the stand with a half wind in my back glassing. Plan was to get across under wind and walk back to the car. On the way out already I spotted a single hog feeding. Wind was steady in my half back, angling away from the pig, so closer I stalked. At about 50 yards I took a kneeling shot (Blaser R8 .308 Win. suppressed, Hornady Monoflex Bullet @ 2550 fps). Hog went down.
:-)
Baptized on this trip was my Texas Hat
With full apologies for the poor quality pictures, but there was just no FC around to take proper ones...

Hell yeah, and Thanks Ed, PM sent and safe travels to you sir.
i;m going to fill our feeders up this week and get them coming in so i bust one with that 45-70 and my brother can try out his night vision scope he put on his ar.
Hey Steve, I'm curious to hear what you find out. FYI, maybe you know about it already, but there's a place in Everett, PA called The Wilderness Hunting Ranch, that might work for a group like ours. Bill

That'll work, maybe y'all can do a 1-2-BOOM double on a couple of em.
This weekend spring turkey season starts at my lease. Yesterday I touched off two turkey loads in the ancient pre-war Browning A5, just to check its pattern, and I remembered why I shoot it once a year
One of these days I really need to get that rock hard recoil pad replaced. But it does throw a tight pattern of #4's.
cal74 shot a rattlesnake on the first evening hunt. The photo shows him helping Trevor, one of the guides, to skin it. The snake did the usual reptilian zombie-like coiling and squirming after it had lost its head. .
Ok I'm starting to plan towards next March I really like the lodge and facilities at the ranch but was disappointed in the quantity of hogs. I'm trying to remedy that part of the hunt. The food, accommodations, sporting clay/rifle range and game room made this hunt Next go round I promise many more hogs will be present along with nice digs I am planning on keeping this hunt in Texas as that's the best place to meet our needs,I realize that it's a long trip for some but I think it's worth it in the end If any one has any suggestions or comments please speak up We had a great group attend this past hunt. I think next go round Pat and I will get even more involved in the cooking/ food to insure we get some special eats. I want to have brisket night and possibly Steak night after all we are in Texas!
I'm bringing a better suited vehicle next year. And a better and brighter green light. And hopefully a lot less of me. Down 36 lbs since March 5th. Have lost 21 lbs since the Hog Hunt. Gotta brag a little bit. Brisket night sounds great.
Thank you Tom. They will probably just make the doors smaller. Heres to hoping I can keep going. Maybe next time the hogs will come out before dark thirty.
Might want to raffle off one of those bastard ostriches next year. Twenty five hunters at $120 a pop ought to work out, if all want to get in.
Donate the head mount to the lodge, if they pay the taxi.
I think we can work something out to raffle TWO birds at a discounted rate....maybe $100 per ticket for each bird! And we will pay for the taxidermy....Lois wants some boots
My vote is that the hunt stay on the East coast, maybe PA. It sounds like TX was fun but I don't think I'm alone when I say that I think the total of costs involved was prohibitive. Just my $.02

There may be others hunts but this one is going to stay in TX hunting PA isn't really quite what we are looking for in the hunting part of the equation.
The Texas hunt seemed like way too much fun to change it and because of that, I think we should keep it.
I'm also going to check out an additional place to hunt in Tennessee this week. That general location seemed to work for a lot of us and the Tennessee hills and the people there are pretty attractive. Unfortunately, the owner of the place we went to before turned out to be big time unreliable. I think we can do much better and give the guys at the Fire more options.
I don't think that having a good time in Texas is just luck. I've been there about a dozen times and always enjoyed it. The Texans, the wide open spaces, the hunting and the food all made it memorable and enjoyable for me.
We need to keep on going back. And God bless Dan and the others for making it happen.
I'm working on that Poobs, Next year I will guarantee lots and lots of hogs will be present where ever we end up. Plenty of time this go round to make every thing right

Cool beans! you did a fantastic job on short notice this time! The accommodations were the absolute shizz. Ed and I slept like kids till 10 am the morning we were supposed to leave at 8:30..
I hear, you are still on good terms with your driving mate. That says a lot.
Dan,
is Lois attacking our pig driving ostrich?
I do not believe, the story ever came out, but that bird was instrumental for Joe taking that one pig of opportunity late that one evening.
We were walking back to stand after checking for sign of a hit of his first shot, when we hear the pigs in the brush off to the side. A few steps in got us into position - spreading out for clear lanes of fire.
The ostrich then came in circling around, flushing the pig out for Joe to shot.
Like a damn pointer. It was a sight to see.
We should have 'em look into that and train em for pig hunting. I tell you, there is a fortune to be made.

Be hard as hell to fit one inside the back seat of a pickup though. Actually, even my niece's mastiff would fit better

I was stunned. The ranch crew were all sitting there about twiddling thumbs waiting when we moseyed out of the room. Though I was sick the whole time it was flatazz relaxing and a pleasure to meet some new names.
Dan,
If you need any help let me know. If within a reasonable drive I will kill a day to visit a potential ranch. Nothing but time here.
Work interference interfered this year..... But going from a yak to a pig pointing ostrich has me wondering about the new things that'll be showing up in the years to come..... PAMac
That ostrich stuck his head into Roof's ground blind one day, and damn near got its head blown off.
The worst thing was that he was standing right in front of us and wouldn't move out of the way so we could see the feeder. All the more reason to blow his head off.
I don't think it would be possible to train'em to do anything. I don't think there's very much goin on up stairs.
Texas looked fun but I hope you guys come back this way next year. I'm good for the entire trip now that I have a new boss and can take a couple days off.

Steve is planning on a survey trip soon. While Texas is awesome, there are some great folks we would get if it was a one day drive too. Lots of room for two campfire pig hunts.
That said, So I have an idea for numbers (which I know is almost a year away) who is still interested in attending a TX hog hunt? This isn't a concrete commitment but it will give me an idea of a rough number so I can find a ranch according to group size. As usual we will have new members wanting to join our merry band and other who have attended that won't make the next. We were at 24 this year...
I'd be in for one of them in March. That's a good time for me before it gets busy. I'd go anywhere I needed to go. TX is cool but TN would be drivable. I think I would look at the setup of each place and weigh the pros and cons of each and decide from there.
If there's room and it's early enough in March, because he works for me, I'd like to bring my son. He's 23 and loves to shoot and hunt. That would be the advantage of TN. Then we could drive.
March seems to be the month as there is still whitetail hunting in TX till the end of Feb and April-May brings fishing and turkey season for many, hence the month of March....if we skip till June in Texas we will sizzle like sausages
Well the damn ostrich struck again, he was going after Lois so I got in between them. ended up needing stitches in my arm, tickets are now 75 dollars each

I'm surprised I haven't already heard of its' demise.
Dan! Quick! come up with a recipe for BBQ Ostrich or somesuch.
Shameless plug for Camera Land. I won a Meopta scope in the monthly drawing. Greg asked that I do a review on the scope. Here is a link if anyone is interested. Link
Thanks Carl yea the binos would of been great but im not gonna complain. It was the first drawing I think I have ever won. Camera Land guys are good people.
Just an update I am working on things and checking out options. We will be at a new ranch this year as Derek has moved on from ADL7 and with out Derek and Lois present I'm not comfortable dealing with the new owner. Have a few irons in the coals and as things progress I will report back There will be a Texas hog hunt, it will be mid March....plan on it !

If you guys are willing to come out to farther west Texas I would be glad to have you all. I have some ranches along the river that have some fair to good hog numbers along with Javelina and Predators. Depending on group size we can hunt just 1 ranch or multiple that border each other.
Nice sized ranches ranging in size from 15,000 to 20,000 acres each.
Can do some night time Predator calling and varmint shooting too for a few each evening from the high rack.
I know it's early but I have things set and ranch is reserved. Plan ahead now dates of 2016 Campfire hog hunt are 3/9/16-3/13/16(Wed-Sun) Arrive Wed. Afternoon hunt Thurs.-Sat. and depart Sunday a.m. All meals and lodging, 3 hogs on 14,000 acre ranch(5000 high fence 9000 low) 45 blinds so no doubling up unless you choose to. 3 to a room each room has its own bathroom with shower Cost for every thing(excluding license, butchering and tips) is $750.00 We will be hunting near Crystal City TX once again There WILL be hogs to shoot! We will have a max of 26 hunters, and again previous attendees will have 1st dibs.
Looking like I might have to bring something classier than the McFlame this year, Darrik ( shortactionsmoker) hooked me up with a cute little #1A in .222
V11 LW. I'm aching to get to the range with it. I couldn't manage it last weekend.
As I recall, you brought an AR to the party in March. You, Roof and Gunner became my inspirations. Especially after Roof perforated his pig in a blinding rainstorm.

Well, okay, it wasn't blinding, but still.
actually I brought three of them, since the rails make it easy to mount a light. Just wish I'd bought a bigger light
My new super-duper Hawkeye light arrived for the borescope. Think I might do some studying on a couple of the AR's, to see if they need barrels...
Then again I'm also ogling a couple of old rifles, too
I guess from what Dan said there is only 1/2 hour of darkness you'll be facing, so you may not need to gear up with lights etc... Though I already have a kill light, and Im bringing it!
A kill light would have been right handy at this year's hunt in the 1/2 hour of darkness. I'll bring one next time.
Ingwe, Go to 7X Leather, look at wrist ammo cuff, I use them with all my #1's fastest reload with a single shot and really easy to use. Rio 7
DOH!
I was actually gonna make a joke about the wrists cuffs...but I guess I wont now....
They actually do make sense but the only thing important that this gun will be used for is pigs. Experience has taught me when the gun goes off, you have a LOT of time to put another bullet in it before another pig shows up.....they scatter like Mofos!
I'm in if you guys will have me. If there's room, I'd love to bring my son. He'll be 24 and loves to hunt. He's a good shot. Don't tell him I said this, but he's better than me. But that's not saying much.
Just need to know about the deposit. When, where, and how much.
Dan, im interested in a Texas hunt in March so keep me in the loop for any details.....should have no problem swinging it as its before construction season starts
Hey Dan, Never heard from you on when and where to send a deposit. You guys had talked about possibly going to TN, but guess you're not going to do that. Also, I was wondering if it's ok to bring my son. I think I have your email address.
One things for sure, I and many others saw you having a great time. Expensive to get here from there. Glad you had a great time. As far as the guns and ammo goes, that just the way it is over here. We share.
This coming year we'll bring a 45/70 Sharps for you to try. Maybe some other boomers too.
I will bring it as it is a fun piece to shoot. After an azzload of research (and multiple failures with domestic basic slugs regulating) I learned that they were regulated to the aforementioned 1 oz MP slug. Sure as dung it would place multiple pairs inside 2" at 50 yards. Sometimes, me being the factor, inside 1 1/2". The last hog drilled with it was at a friends ranch outside Camp Wood whereby my middle son and I noted him heading towards our ground blind (he was hunting whitetail, me for grins). The hog poked his nose in the air, scented us then burst straight away. All I saw was his azz heading away. I swung, yes a classic double, and fired as he crested a small rise. We waited a few minutes and went to find a 150'ish pound boar dead with a full diameter hole a bit right of his azzhole and the slug residing in his throat. My boy just said, "nice shot".
Who can we get to try it? It would have to be someone young enough and resilient enough to withstand a brutal pounding into the ground and still bounce back up again for another try.
I bought a Jen-u-eyne Rook rifle. Now I have to figure out what to do with it...
Well, shoot a rook, I guess. What kind of rook rifle?

hmmm...who do we know that has the derring-do to attempt to spear a boar? And knows how to ride a horse?...hmmm...
The RR is a small frame Martini, in .300 Rook. It should actually work on small deer, if I can contrive a flat pointed bullet for it.

Bullet dia is said to be .300. There is supposed to be a chamber cast coming with the rifle, but I will check it all out in detail before trying to load for it. You can actually buy bullets at Buffalo Arms, but they are classic round nosed small game slugs. With a flat point no reason it should not exceed the .25-20 in killing power.
Buffalo Arms is cool beans. They are about 10 miles from my place in Idaho. I wonder if the 115 gr PBFN .309" cast by Beartooth and run through a Lee bullet sizing die would work? I bet Lee would make you one to spec provided. I have used their bullet sizing dies, post lube, and they work like a champ. Just a thought.
On another note, I think I will be bringing my recently acquired Browning M53 .32-20 to next year's hunt. I need to play with the cast 32's I have for my Ruger Single Six's to see if they will feed. If not I suspect a 100 gr XTP would work.
What I may try with this one is make a "nose flattener die"
When I had a .45-70 Marlin it shot the 350gr Hornady RN well, but I wasn't crazy about using round nose bullets in a hard kicker's tubular magazine. I made a very simple die that held the bullet square, and then pressed a flat into the nose. I was trying to prevent a chainfire, but the technique might work to improve the bullet's lethality.
Some years ago a chap was selling an azzload of original blue box .416 400 gr Barnes soft points dirt cheap. I offered to buy a couple of hundred and he sent me all he had, 500 at least. Maybe the 416 Rem M70 throwing the Barnes at handgun speeds would be the ticket.
Theres gonna be lots of weird things being shot at the pigs this year! I'm bringing the new .222 and some Barnes...pretty pedestrian compared to a .416 'lite'
Hope everyone is doing well, been busy with work and archery season here. I will be contacting the outfitter for the hog hunt in a few more weeks and get the timing and information for deposits for the March TX hog hunt. I'll post the info as to when and where deposits need to be sent.
Things have gone well so far this deer season for me
I got this one a couple of weeks ago. I shouldn't have shot him, I passed up a nice 8 pt. that night because I already had this one hanging........and don't give me schit for my see through mounts either, I use my open sights occasionally. You never know when you might need'em.
I just thought I'd head you guys off at the pass because I knew it was coming.
Both of my muzzle loaders have them. They were the first scopes I ever had and wasn't sure about scopes and wanted to keep my options open. I had a guy tell me at a gun shop one time that it was a huge mistake, but I'm still not sure why. Everyone on the Fire seems to hate them, but I've never had a problem. Matter of fact, I've had to use the open sights a couple of times when the scope got fogged up in the rain and snow.
Yea, Yea.....you guys are hard on the newbee. Last year it was my Bushnell, now I'm gonna get beat up for the see through mounts. I am....I'm emotionally compromised. You better watch out, now I might go out and shoot the place up or something.
I only have 2 sets, that's one of my muzzle loaders. Can I get a pass for only having 2? I promise I won't do it again. And no Bubba-Buddies here.
OK, I hope you guys feel better, I took the muzzle loader barrel (the one with the see throughs) off of the Encore and put the slug barrel on it. Gun season comes in on Saturday. I know there's a lot of bad azz rifles out there, but a 12 gauge slug is just plain nasty. I've got a Nikon Slug Hunter 3-9x40 with BDC retical and has a 5" eye relief so you don't get the crap knocked out you.
I shoot these Breneke Magnum Crush 3". It's a 1 1/2 oz. slug designed for rifled slug barrels. For some reason, the rifling goes the opposite direction as slugs for smooth barrels.
I went to the range yesterday to make sure everything is good to go. This was at 100 yrds. Don't pay attention to the one at 3 o'clock, that one was operator error but still a dead deer. There's 4 rounds at the top.
They don't go far when you hit'em.
I shouldn't tell you this because I'll never here the end of it, but when they came out with those damn Butt Out tools, somebody gave me one as a joke for Christmas. So I tried it and the damn thing actually worked but it was "a pain in the azz". Personally, I don't worry about the azzhole. I don't hang them long enough to worry about it.
I'll also be carrying this. Ruger .480 SRH. I got it about 10 or 12 years ago. When I did, I put this Leupold 2X extended eye relief on it. It's very difficult to use. You have to have it in the precise position to see through it. The other problem is it won't work during the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes of daylight.
So this year I took the Leupold off and put an Ultra Dot on it. It's a huge improvement. It's so much easier to see through and I can actually hit the target with it. It looks like this now.
Alright all of you ballistics experts. Tell me this, you're gonna say I'm crazy, but the hole in that deer is the Entrance wound. The Exit wound is the size of the slug. Why is the Entrance wound so big? I've always noticed it and wondered why.
No deer...starting Saturday. I carry both, the Encore and the 480. I use the revolver for the close in "bow" shots and the longer (over 40 yrds.) shots are reserved for the 12 gauge.

I don't have the scientific explanation,( but I should...) but look at wound channels in ballistic gel, they are ALWAYS bigger at the beginning of the wound channel....
Ok just talked with the outfitter and got deposit situation ironed out. I will collect all deposits made out to me and then just write him one check rather than him having to deposit 26 checks. Deposits should be sent to me and arrive no later than Jan 15th. deposit will be 1/2 which is $375
again here are the details of the hunt

PM me for deposit address and lets start the list so we know who is attending and if there are any opened spots for new guys.I spoke with Derek our guide from last year and he and Lois are coming and hunting with us!
Sad day for me just found out the bordering land owner killed this deer I'd been after, must have been Sunday after I stopped and talked to him. They didn't see him nor even know he was around. It was the last day of the gun season he had a 1/2 day to make it.Kind of sick to my stomach
i'm going to hunt some culls like that next week. we went out last night with the spotlight and saw 4 huge bucks. rut still hasn't kicked off on my buddy's place yet.
Talked to the gentleman who killed the big deer today,he actually shot it 2 weeks ago. He didn't score it but said it had 5" bases 12" G2's and 16" inside spread(which surprised me) He actually killed it across the road and it was pushed out of a huge cattail swap.He laid all the cards out and full disclosure as we chatted for over an hour.He knew the deer was there since June, but it vanished on him for a while. My suspicion that it was dead already last weekend when I stopped to talk to him was correct. He said he really didn't know me but after speaking to a mutual acquaintance he felt comfortable telling me everything. We agreed to share our intell next season and I'll keep the back side of his property secure and he will do the same for me. I can't be to upset as it's his larger pieces of property, food plots and QDM that make my spot good as well.
Taking orders for morning Bloody Mary's. I have a mix that when combined with a few splashes of Tabasco kills. This with Enchanted Rock vodka (same place that does Rebecca Creek stuff) and all is good.
