Look: It's very simple. In the minds of many...

White = Racist

Non-White = Victim of White Racists

No fact, no act will change that.

I did not know John Wayne, although I met him on a couple of occasions. I did know a number of people who knew him well, including one of his duck hunting partners and I never heard that he was a "racist." I have never heard of that alleged interview with Parr. If anyone could find a copy of it I'd like to see it.

I did know Jim Arness pretty well as I wrote several Gunsmoke scripts for him and worked on the McChahans at MGM when he did that show. I never heard one word whatsoever about Arness that would indicate he was "racist."

As far as blacks working "behind the camera," or as it's called in Hollywood, "below the line," the stage hand unions are incredibly strong in Hollywood, with a tremendous amount of nepotism involved in one becoming a member of the union. If a person does not "know" someone, or if a person is not a relative of a crew member, it is still very, very difficult to get into those unions. Blacks have managed to make some inroads, but that has come mainly because of affirmative action.

As far as a bunch of drinkers in a black bar labeling John Wayne as a "racist," when their minds are made up due to years of rumors and falsities, there is no way to change those minds so one might as well forget trying and just enjoy the booze and music. wink

grin grin Figured you would know better than most. I'll watch Gunsmoke until the day I leave this life.

Thanks for the scripts and the memories bud!

By coincidence this photo of The Duke showed up in my twitter feed. Don't know if he was racists or not, but he was a hell of a good lookin' kid.

I was surprised the first time I heard that as well. This poor white boy (sharecropper) from northern MN just couldn't fathom how it could be true!

Glad you enjoy the show. I had a lot of fun writing for it and met some very nice people, including Jim Arness. Gunsmoke was the longest running series in the history of television: 20 years.

Just as a point of trivia, when you watch the shows and see the name of "John Mantley, Executive Producer," you might find it interesting to know that he flew Spitfires with the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW II.

John could tell some very interesting tales about that when we'd have lunch along with a drink or two. wink

Leanwolf;
Thanks for the bit of trivia on a RCAF vet sir, I appreciate it and enjoyed reading his bio in wiki.

If you ever find yourself driving north of the medicine line on the 97 Highway I'd be honored to see you get some of your favorite beverage or some "world famous" ice cream if it's in season.

I appear to owe you that sir as your writing helped pass a lot of Saskatchewan winter nights for this prairie raised Canuck.

Thanks again for the inside scoops you share with us and all the best to you this weekend.

Dwayne

I saw some folks making comments about him on FB.

2 things

The claimed he was a homosexual

and

Claimed he was a Draft Dodger by getting 3 exceptions.

Any credibility?

And no, this is not a stir pf the pot, but a serous question. I am a huge fan of the Duke, and this information (or in the case of the exceptions, the interpretation of) seems odd.

Ditto BYC's sentiments. Gunsmoke has always been one of my favorite shows, and that will never change.

As far as the OP's question, I don't know, and don't really care. If John Wayne had made racist statements, I'm sure they would have surfaced by now. Whatever private feelings he had on various issues, if he kept them to himself, were (are) his.

I'd like to turn the tables on the blacks asking about John Wayne. How many of their favorite actors today are overtly racist or bigoted, and given a pass?

Good evening to you sir, hopefully this finds you well.

I still recall getting our first TV and then it was black and white and there was only one channel. When the second channel came out it was really, really cool......

Gunsmoke and some of the Quinn Martin productions that Leanwolf wrote were a very welcome diversion from 5 months of Saskatchewan winters.

It's really like I came from a different world and I can scarcely grasp it anymore. We had to drive 15 miles to pick up the mail.....

All the best to you this weekend sir.

John Wayne was 34 at the time of Pearl Harbor with a wife and four kids and a bum shoulder.
He still tried to enlist.

Wayne's three wives and all those women of his legendary affairs would, no doubt, get quite a kick out of some idiot claim that he was a homosexual.

I figured as much, I asked them for a source of their claims...that request was ignored.

BC30CAL, many thanks for the compliment and the invitation to share an adult beverage or two in British Columbia. If I get up your way, I'll definitely take you up on your kind offer.

I've been in B.C. and Alberta a couple of times but never to Saskatchewan. I can imagine however, that those winters up there do get a shade cold. Glad the shows took some of the boredom away.

Best regards.

There is a story that Wayne and Ward Bond while drinking their way on broad ship to Ireland had a manhood measuring contest. Don't know who won.
