I think I am going back to get a second one, I have the Kimber covert pro with crimson trace grip, but think I want a gun with the bobbed tail on it. Smith gun looks good with the external extractor, but never owned one.

Nice - that's a S&W, correct? I have a scandium bob tail Commander, but not as fancy as that!

yes sir, I am looking at that one pretty hard. I am doubting you can shoot one of these new scandium guns to pieces without an investment in 2-3 times the cost of the gun in ammunition?

Take a look at the Dan Wesson Guardian or V-Bob. I have the Guardian and its an impressive piece.

I like the v-bob it is what I carry, but is all stainless so on the heaver side of things. I like a heaver gun carry it all day and while hunting with no problems. But it is not as light as the alloy guns that is for sure.

I have 3; a S&W Scandium, a DW Guardian & a Christensen with a titanium frame.

All are very good & are 100% reliable; the S&W has an external extractor.

The S&W is the most cost effective of the 3, it is well finished & has never had an issue of any kind & it shoots well. I should probably put some slightly thinner grips on it as it's my most carried gun over the last 3 years. Its does exactly all that the other two do at a substantially lower cost; I actually have another S&W w/o the bobtail & it's also never hiccuped either......S&W's external extractor flat out works.

The DW, likewise, has been perfect in all respects; hard to get a better gun at any price from a functional & performance standpoint. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this gun.

The Christensen has also been 100% perfect &, likely due to the thinner grips, feels like no other in the hand. The only "issue" I've had with it, which is probably just me, was before I ever fired it.

As with any new gun, I always disassemble it & check all parts; this gun has a titanium frame with the frame rails carbide coated & I thought the finish on the rails should be a bit finer, so I polished the rails before it was ever fired. Otherwise the gun is perfect as is to be expected from a gun from Christensen.

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.

I think I've forgotten this before.

Having carried either a Glock 19/23 or a fullsize steel 1911 as my daily carry gun for the past several years, this is a departure for me and a welcome one. The lightness of the scandium frame is a very noticeable improvement.

As MM has reported, I've found this gun to be very reliable, accurate, and ergonomical.

I have a S&W 1911 Series 'E' Scandium bob tail Commander, black w/nite sites. It is my everyday carry.

I also have its full size 5" brother, a Series 'E' in SS.

I've had a full size Colt Series 80, SA 'Loaded', and a Para 3" "Slim Dawg". I've also had a trial with a 3" Colt Defender in an effort to find out why both 3" guns were jam-O-matics.

After the joke the Colt was, and the horrible finish work of the SA, I went over both the S&W guns with a magnifying glass and found NO finish failures. Every thing was smooth, square and even.

When S&W setup to make them in Holton ME, the bought all new equipment and brought all their senior machine people from across the country to set things up.

The trigger is patented. Look at the undercut behind the trigger guard. Look at the top of the slide. The sites are 'Novak' cuts. The mag well is cut back on all FOUR sides. The ejection port is further relieved. The muzzle is crowned and protected by the bushing. It doesn't require tools to take down. The frame holes for the take down pin are relieved on both sides. The machined grids in the fore and back grips have had their points taken off so they don't rip your skin off.

I think the changes on the Series E represent really useful progress of a 1911 and not just fluff to jack up the price.

I agree, Spike. The Scandium "E" series by S&W is an outstanding value.

I've gone through a couple dozen 1911's of various provenance, and none have stayed around long unless they've had some custom work done on them. My new 1911 E-series bobtail Commander-size gun is the only factory 1911 I currently own, and not only do I intend to keep it, I'm planning on getting another.
