The Freedom holding company is dropping the Marlin "X" centerfires because another of their holdings (Remington) has also brought out a new entry level rifle. Based on Remingtons past efforts in this market (utter failure) the loss of the Marlin is a loss to us all. BUT they are out there in almost all configurations at "a steal" to "fair prices". (Even found camo and wood stock ones !) I scarfed 2, a 308 VH and a plain jane 30-06. Total spent (w/o scopes) was less than $600. Like all X guns, with a bit of stock tuning they are/will be sub MOA rifles. They also take Savage bbls if you ever burn your's out. 308VH Mossy Oak Winter Brush 30-06 as issued, will become a 28th Division tribute rifle

Hi, CN, I added the Mossy Oak camo wrap, it was all black (as the 06 was) when purchased.
Probably still a good selection at Budsgunshop.com
That's where I got the 06 and a 223 that's on the way.
Savage "regular caliber" barrels also fit. (No belted or Short mags)

I have one in 30-06 that is sub-moa with 46.5 gr. Varget and a speer 180 gr. It has a cheap Leupold rifleman on top.
I really need to get another one or two in different calibers.

Now is the time. Just bought #4, a Stainless 7mm08, $248 shipped.
Gun buyer.com
Scored Silver VX II, Leupold bases, millet rings on Ebay for 10 buck less than the rifle.
When the latest attempt at an entry level rifle from big Green crashes like the last two, The Freedom group will be eating crow.

I'm seeing them on there for 284 (still a screaming deal). Are you sure you paid 248?

Fat old fingers screwed up $284.02 shipped. Thanks for the correction. Buddy says they have 270 blues for 250, great basis for a build.
thanks, Larry

My latest project: Hi, My father was a highly decorated company commander in the 28th division in WW II. He started out as a private in the Horse cavalry and advanced from enlisted to officer. He was also the only American to take part in the liberation of Paris with the free French (as he spoke French). I decided it would be neat to make a tribute rifle for the 28th which is America’s oldest division, still serving in the PA Guard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28th_Infantry_Division_(United_States) If you have not seen the movie When Trumpets Fade see it. It makes Saving Private Ryan look like a walk in the park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Trumpets_FadeStarted with one of the fine Marlin X7s in 30-06 (of course), painted and decorated it with the division motto, images of the famous “Bloody Bucket” and a patch listing all the 28ths campaigns The Kahles is only on there to wring it out and is paint over masking tape. Probably put a fixed 6X on it down the road. Hope you like it, Larry

I wish Remington had dropped their piece of garbage and kept the X7. I shot one at the range earlier this year and it was very impressive. I am not sure that I have seen a better rifle for the money.
