I did a ruff score on him at just short of 150 if I did it right.

The cuts we hunt are pretty small. Most are edge type with swamps and creeks ect. to cause funnels. The area is really a doe home area also so we get the cruising bucks looking for the hot does.

All this talk of the 300 Savage I might have to drag mine out and use this year. Mine is not that good looking 99 but a Remington 722. Here is better look at that big 10.

Nothing wrong with a 722 in .300 Savage. I have two and really enjoy hunting with them. One was put together in 1948, the other in 1951. Nice buck!

start a movement to eliminate the shotgun zone, could be easy considering other states have done it.

BUT since you're in MN it could be hard to reverse/change ANY gun statute/rule.

then you can hunt away with a 99

And actually for good reasons.

The shotgun hunters have their own style of hunting. I'm not going to paint it in a poor light, it's just different than rifle hunting. Lots of drives, lots of shooting, lots of elevation (arc).

Lots of open country too.

Too many folks get terribly riled at the idea of rifles being used vs shotguns. Mostly I think because they picture the rifle going through the same motions, hunting technique stays exactly the same, just rifles instead of shotguns. And those rifles are far too deadly for the slug lobbers.

They can't seem to picture a hunting technique that matches the weapon. Locked into their practices.

You couldn't pay me enough to hunt shotgun slug country and for a lot of shotgun slug hunters, you couldn't pay them enough to hunt in rifle country.

Wasn't it a few years ago that most of Clay County was changed to rifle country and then the locals got Clay County converted back to shotgun only like it had been before the change of the northern part of the Red River Valley north of Hwy 10/I-94 to rifles?

East of Hwy 32 is rifle. When they changed it a few years ago, it opened up everything west of 32 and north of 10 to rifle. It was quickly changed back.

I don't think using a shotgun makes you a sloppy, slug lobbing idiot. And in my experience the times I have hunted rifle zone in open country, I've been twice as careful and contentious as the rifle hunters I was with. Namely ND hunters that were pissed at me for not taking a driven doe as it ran out of river bottom and across a field with scores of houses in the background.

I grew up in a slug zone, and there were lots of slug lobbers. to make matters worse the seasons were 2 and 4 days long. meaning from sunup til dark guys were driving deer and shooting at everything that moved to fill tags. I think a lot of the slug "style" of hunting is rooted there.

if I were forced to go back to a slug zone I would use a modern muzzleloader (if it were legal). using 209 primers and a saboted .45 bullet. topped with a good scope and 200 yards would be very doable.

I will never participate in a "pheasant" style deer drive. you know the kind where 3-6 guys walk through a woodlot, cornfield or swamp and push every deer out towards 2 posters who blast at them as they run out.

I much prefer stalking a draw towards someone who can cover the bottom in case something tries to slip out unnoticed. my style of hunting has majorly changed since I left MN.

My days of deer drives went away 20 years ago when our party disbanded due to age. Now days I sit in the same stands that I bow hunt in.

True. There are some slug lobbers but there are also guys that do the same thing with rifles only at further distances.

It's the hunter not the method IMO.

Been hunting in the slug zone for thirty three years. We rarely, if ever, get out of our stands and if we do, it is for a super slow 1 man stalk and nudge with one exception. That is a 2 man gentle nudge cuz it is two sides of a creek. I would love to be able to hunt with rifles. I would agree with TJay, it is the hunter not the gun. Modern slug guns are just about as accurate as the average guys rifle too out to 150 yards. Our party shoots 2 MOA. I have seen a lot of targets at the range that were rifle hunters that didn't do that. Of course all the guys on this forum do better I am sure!😄. It has cost us a couple of gigantic Bucks over the years as we just can't shoot 200+ yards. Man, I watched a 4X4 a few years back that was ginormous. Dad had a 5x5 that had tines about 6 feet long at 225 yards. Well maybe not quite 6 feet but darn close!😁.

Someone start the movement to change the regs! I am all in!
