Your culture stems from where you were raised, primarily up through mid-teens. it instills your commonly held speech patterns, and celebrations and observances.
Some, especially military brats are raised in a different location every 2-4 years and often don't form those 'cultural identities.
Often, people will adopt and/or substitute the cultural norms of their current location.
As has been mentioned, there is more and more blending across this great land of ours.

Unfortunately with that blending the country hasn't fared so well. Only takes one bad ingredient in a recipe to ruin it, aka the turd in the punch bowl.
Well I think on my own, I'm neither conservative nor liberal. What's funny is, all the liberals I know call me a knuckle dragging conservative. As long as I have people like you calling me a liberal, and liberals calling me a conservative, I'll know that I'm in good shape. 'Cause you people all let others do the thinking for you. I can start any political conversation and tell you what you're going to say about it.
Sure. Jeff0 was a moderate, too. lol....
Most liberals (like you) refuse to own up to what they are.
The "think for myself" line that you really like to use a lot is common among liberals too, and just as false as most things you believe.
And as far as this statement goes:
I can start any political conversation and tell you what you're going to say about it.
we should all take that as a compliment to our steadfast values and opinions.

Born and raised in the Spanish Caribbean well before it was that, when it was still part of the Deep South. Southern is my native language and heritage, y'all.
Lived in Yankeedom briefly, couldn't get away fast enough.
For the last 25 years have made my home in the Far West (the best place I've ever lived by a long, long, long shot) although for the last few years in a city with creeping inroads from the Left Coast, something which unfortunately plagues most larger cities in this area.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

True.
My point was that regional (cultural) differences, while still present, are becoming muted.
Some of that can be attributed to chain restaurants and box stores.

As I've long concluded about fence sitters, er ah moderates, the only reason to sit on a fence is if you like getting a fence post up your back side.

I'd guess that my dad was a product of one of the great blenders in our society. Ie.-WWII...
He was born and raised deep south.
I was born a construction gypsy kid, but most of my early memories are deep south...
I'd agree that not all of the blending has benefited our nation. It let the camel of tolerance into our national tent. Tolerance is a popular notion, but played out it leads to system dependence, and supports such calamities as gender equity.
Gender equity demands that any 90 lb school girl with a degree can be the principal of a high school that teaches a mix of kids including 200 lb.+ boys. This leads to zero tolerance school policies, and eventually to those policies being enacted as legislation. What utter bullshit we have come to accept...
I do believe that national elections are important. I think that to fundamentally change America for the better though, we need to start with our school board elections and get rid of the 90 lb school girl principals...
