Early this year I purchased a very nice 1950 (but not all original - has recoil pad) 300 Savage 99EG with a 1" Stith and early Weaver K4. Since then, I've been on the lookout for an original 99EG to go with the Stith/K4. I think I just found it. I may have paid a little too much for it. Hope it makes the grade. If it does, it will be my first all original. If I'm right I think it is a 1946. Here is the link. What do you think on this limited info/pics. Thanks, Keith http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=483129710

Looks all original to me, serial number looks right for 1946 I think (But going from memory). Stith it and hunt it, you'll be good to go in the field.
Bring back pics in November!

the best we can come with is that the serial numbers in 1945 were 427700 to 447601. Savage then jumped to 500,000 with the move to Chicoppee Falls.

Keith, That would be interesting. I'm sure Savage used leftover components after they moved to Chicoppee. They used up 1895 leftover components on the early 1899, leftover Model 1920 barrels on 99's and leftover Chicoppee barrels on the early post-mil 99F's after the move to Westfield.

This one is definitely going to be a Utica barrel unless it went back to the factory later (very low odds on that).
We have some a few very early Chicopee Falls rifles with Utica barrels, I believe. But this one doesn't fall in that category.

Can't look at the GB posting on my phone, but I got to ask why you want to swap the Stith rig onto this rifle?

Can't look at the GB posting on my phone, but I got to ask why you want to swap the Stith rig onto this rifle? I bought the first EG for hunting (very clean, with the recoil pad), with the 1" Stith and a first series Weaver K4 for under $500. I took the Stith/K4 off and put on a Lightfoot mount and a Vari-X III (that I already owned) on it for hunting. I wanted to save the Stith setup for a future all original. Now that I have this all original headed my way, I will put the 1" Stith with the early first series K4 on it ... so I have a nice, original EG with the vintage scope setup on it in the safe. Hope that makes sense and answers your question.

Nice gun. Reasonable price.
The Stith and scope will be a great addition.

Yep... it sure looks like it's a 1946 model. Here's 3 excerpts from my list of Model 99s and their ages. I've "boldfaced" Rick99's comment at the end of 1946 Model 99's serial number: 1945: 4270xx, 4296xx, (both shipped in mid-1945 - Both had John Callahan letters), 1946: 438,xxx-( “Last Utica guns were in the 447xxx range as of Nov. 1946. I think production restarted at Chicopee in 1947 at around 500,000.”-Rick99) 1947: 464,xxx Hope this helps... Strength & Honor... Ron T.
