I like the 1968 Charger R/T and the 1970 'Cuda. Engine? Hemi w/4speed manual of course is preferable but small blocks are cool too (perhaps an 1970 AAR 'Cuda). Perhaps in Rallye Green or Alpine White for the 'Cuda. I used to have a bright yellow 1970 Banannacuda and one of my bro's had a orange 1970 Cuda with a replacement 360 engine. My older bro bought a new 1969 Dodge Superbee in Rallye Green, 383 w/4speed.

How about you?

Be safe

tzone;
I hope this finds you and yours acceptably well tonight tzone.

Back in the day, my very quiet Mennonite brother in law came home with a '68 Fairlane GT. If memory serves it was a high compression 390 and I know it was a 4 speed. My sister isn't a big lady and it was all she could do to keep the clutch down for more than a few seconds. laugh

I seem to recall it didn't like regular gas all that much either.

For me, the ultimate car has always been the '69 GTO Judge package with a 400CI.

In the little Saskatchewan city where we used to go see whose car went the quickest, I watched one eat a Mustang one night like it was standing still.

Now that Mustang had eaten my own '71 T-37 the weekend before, despite my carefully tuned, bored and balanced 283 small block running well that night. So when the Judge did away with that little Ford, I knew what I wanted!

Have a good evening tzone. All the best to you and yours.

Regards,
Dwayne

I sense a Mopar tendency...........grin

I love the ones you mentioned, and would add a 69-70 Challenger. The E bodies are sexy.

Wouldn't mind a '68 Vette L88 Roadster or '69 Convertible with the ZL-1 motor either

A 67 Shelby GT500 with a 427 side-oiler would be OK I suppose, since this is all pretend money I'm spending. wink

Realistically, I would probably build (or recreate) a highland green 68 GT390 Fastback so I could wear out tires and pretend my name was Frank. Not the fastest of the era, but the one that still gives me goose bumps EVERY time I watch the 10min clip.

Two I've owned....a 1970 Dodge Daytona...with high wing and 426 Hemi engine.......and a 1971 Ford Torino Talledega.....with 429 engine and 550 Hp from the factory.

Sadly, I no longer own either one.....but what a thrill when I did in the 70's.

Thanks for the kind words sir, I do appreciate them very much and will do my best to deserve them.

I would love to see any and all GTO photos!

Those years of A bodies were my favorite somehow, so whether it's a Buick Special, an Olds 442, Chevelle or a Goat, I liked 'em all equally.

My '71 T37 was a sedan version A body and was as close as I'll likely get to owning a GTO. I believe I don't possess the self control needed to own that much power anymore. That and frankly, our eldest daughter who will begin to drive this summer appears to have inherited some of her father's weaknesses. blush

I've already warned her not be racing our slightly modified '03 Cummins 4x4 and she swears up and down she won't...... wink

Thanks again sir, I do appreciate your kind words. All the best to you and yours this week.

1970 Boss 302.
This one of course. I sold it about three years ago and I miss it everyday. Kids going to college and time were the reasons. Ran 10.80's on pump gas with a 550HP all motor 347ci, stroked 302 that is. Many many big blocks were pummeled at the hands of this trick pony.

Hindsight I think I would have opted for mid 60's 426 Hemi and kept it.

I recall seeing a picture of one on the Campfire just a day or so ago in the background of a photo of some rifle.

In 1965 I bought a new 442 convertible. Sure was a contrast to the Buick station wagon! Tire longevity seemed to be a problem.

Here's a 'SOMFB!' moment: my dad's elder sister (by 19 years) was widowed without children. We (brother and I) were here little angels, and we loved (and continue to do so, with her at the age of 91 now) her. When I was around 15 my old man mentioned something in passing about a car he sis had owned. Specifically, a '52 Bel Air, with a 4 speed. It had been her husband's, you see, and had apparently sat, garaged, for 25 years. She claimed nonchalantly to my dad that she hadn't thought anyone would want that loud, fast machine that she feared. She GAVE IT AWAY to a local mechanic 3 months before this conversation. Don't get me started on the extensive rifle collection she had the local PD come out to 'take off her hands'...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

P.S. I love when my buddy fires up the Goat. Flip-up headlights spin, cylinders and pumping pistons come to life... Aw man, when cars were cars!

Wish I could post photos...computer illeterate.....but it's as good as it sounds. Top off, windshield down on the hood and a 196 CI 4 cylinder.....cylinders as big as a cantilope and torque out the ass....with a 12000 pound power driven winch (from the engine....not by with electric).

I think I had the most fun in a 55 Chevy two door wagon I had with a mattress, curtains, etc. in the back. Like a bed room on wheels to a 17 year old.
We'd pull in backwards at the drive in. laugh

68 Dodge Charger here as well, but always had a soft spot for a stock gold 69 Chevelle SS with a 396 in it, everything stock and amazing how many cars it beat.

wasn't mine, best bud's sister who sold it to his younger brother, but we drove it for him for a year till he turned 16.

it was the least we could do.

lucky we didn't wreck it, can't say the same for my bud's 68 GTO or my 71 Dodge Charger

us boomers may be old, but we drove some hella cool machines in our day

67-69 Camaro Z28 with the JL8 4 wheel disc brake option.

That high winding DZ 302 engine was sweet and powerful while being much lighter than a big block.

I'll always have a soft spot for my very first car though.

A 71 Nova SS, 350, 4 speed Muncie, 12 bolt positraction rearend sporting 4.11 gears. This car had power brakes but no power steering and a bench seat instead of the heavier bucket seats.

I agree with just about all of the cars mentioned here and I have owned my share. Like others, I always wish I would of been able to kept all of them as they would of been extremely valuable today.

One of my all time favorites is sitting in my garage for the last 20 years. It is a 67 GTO Convertible, 400 CID, Ram Air, 4 Speed. It is Linden Green, White top, black interior. It also has the 3.55 posi rear end.

Sadly, I don't get to drive it much anymore mainly due to poor health. Before anyone asks me about buying this, let me say absolutely NO WAY IN HELL will I ever sell this car. My health is slowly improving and hopefully I will be back on the road going like a bat out of hell with the top down this spring.

Thanks for bringing up this subject about muscle cars. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's postings.

I own, or my son does...lol

The first one. 70-440 Cuda cloned as an AAR but has 71 gills added. A 1979 modified and painted Imron, Black with cherry pearl and metalflake, AAR emblem is airbrushed.

Second was taken last year in the Garage at Watkins Glenn by a friend who is the engine tuner for the #2 Kurt Busch car....Man, gotta drop a few pounds....

Kurt came down and talked to Darren before the race, unlike most drivers who don't go to the Garage race morning. Kurt got 2nd that day.

Others I have include a 74-360 Challenger, 56 Ford F-100 in Viper red ( son's truck) and dad has a few cool cars also.

[Linked Image] Dad's firebird convertible, a 400 HO car supposed to be light blue. He also has a 55 Chevy 2 dr HT with an 88 IROC Z drivetrain.

I hear you Bender. Though there is nothing like the oldies for nostalgia's sake, they are inferior. If I had plenty of money, like, won the lottery or something, I don't know if I'd even bother with any old cars. My wife's got her '76 Camaro that they bought new. I'm gonna do a light restoration on it for her, but other than that...

Close, but no such animal from the factory. My favorite for the street was the 1966 L79 Chevy II 327/350. We restored and sold the one 15 years ago and it was recently displayed in one of the casinos in Vegas.

We saw it last year and there were several of the original parts that were missing. Too bad. It was a black on black air car with the numbers matching block. It scored a 971 at the Nova Nationals a couple of years before we sold it.

First one?
64 Plymouth Belvedair 426 factory four speed bench seat
only mods: fenderwell headers, deep oil pan small tubs for slicks

68 Ford Galixe 500 the fancy fore runner of the Torino
Fast back luxury would cruise 120 mph all day long

Current one?
1972 Saab Sonett III framed now rear wheel drive with a SBC 350 Lincoln IRS, Miata front crossmember.
Posted By: DARBY Re: Favorite Muscle Car... - 01/18/11
My first new car was a '68 GTO - Verdoro Green with white interior, Ram-Air III 400, 4-speed, 4.33 rear end w/posi, flip-up healights and Tiger Paws. This had the sweetest-sounding factory exhaust this side of a big block Vette with side pipes.

I actually preferred the Charger R/T, but they cost a few dollars short of $4000 - the GTO came in at a bit over $3600. The Vettes were close to $5K, and could NOT be insured by a single man.

A 55 chevy 2 door with a 327 punched to 330+ HP. A year later a brand new 68 Roadrunner. Dayum near died in both of 'em.

I am kind of partial to corvettes but have never owned one. I do have a 1967 GMC short box pick up with a small block in that makes real decent HP that is itching for a restoration. Right now it's just a rat rod but the motor has the double bump heads on it, it's probably out of a late 1960's Camaro. smile

and I owned a 70 SS 350 HP 396. Had a 69' 396 too, both 4 spds.

Groan...

I was denied owning anyone of them...

Graduated High School and then was saddled with putting myself thru college, on my own. So instead I drove VWs I'd buy for $50.00, fix the engine in them.. drive them 50K miles and then sell them for a couple hundred and do it all over again.

Closest thing I ever came to a muscle car was my first car. My mom bought it from an E3 in her office at the Pentagon, who just got orders for Vietnam.. she paid $300.00 for it.

It was a 62 Pontiac Tempest. She brings it home, and I look at it... paint all faded, snow tires on the back of it, body dings etc...looked like crap..

Mom tells me to drive it around the block.. and tells me 'it's real peppy for a 6 cylinder...so I start her up.. sounds like it needs a muffler... mom says "we'll get it a new muffler... just drive it and see how you like it!"

I drive it up the street, around the corner.. to where I hit a stop sign in our residential neighborhood.. all clear, no one around.. out of sight from mom..

We'll see how peppy it is for a 6 cylinder I think...So I floor it.. for about 1 second... it takes off and is going in every direction but straight...

I pop the hood, and to my amazement and glea..the fender wells were cut out of it..shoe horned into it, is a 421 Pontiac engine with the coveted '6 pack' on top of it..

Sweeeet!

that ride lasted 30 days..not from wrecking it.. mom found out about the 'big engine' and promptly relieved me of the keys..
and gave me the keys to a 4 year old VW, which became my getting stuck with VWs for many years as I put myself thru college...

in retrospect, I wonder if she didn't save my life tho...
in those 30 days, I drove that 421, like I was bullet proof.. probably prevented a young moron from being chiseled off of some tree somewhere...

and then there is the time in 1980, I have the opportunity to buy a silver with black strips, bucket seats, black interior, 4 speed 1970 SS 396, that had 20K original on it. It had the 425 horse 396 in it...and the sticker from the window still in the glove box...price from the original owner.. $3500. just what they had paid for it in 1970.

go show my wife of one year the car, and her response was 'and where do you expect to park that???'.. In the garage of course...

"you're not parking that in MY garage! and expecting my car to sit in the drive way all winter!"

hindsite I should have known it by then.. instead of 8 years later, 3 kids later taken away from me.. and 22 years and counting of paying her child support, spousal maintenance etc..

oh the stupid things we do in life...

1966 Shelby GT350 289 HiPo
1968 GT500KR, 427 side oiler
1969 BOSS 429

Odd ball, 1967 Couger 390 GT, first muscle car I helped rebuild.

Lastly, soft spot for the 1964 Galaxie 500 XL convertible, 427 side oiler, 4 on the floor. This was dads car.

I didn't think they did a 425 horse 396, so after a little digging.....

1965 was the only year for the 396/425 engines, available in both Corvettes and any of the full size cars (Impala's Biscaynes, Bel Air's, Caprice). The 427 was introduced in '66. The top Chevy engine in '66 was the 427/425 available only in Vettes and the full size cars. There was also a 427/390 engine for Vettes and full size cars. Top engine for Chevelles (excluding dealer installed or COPO's) was the 396/375 through 1969.

And....

While true that the 396/425's and 396/375's engine specifications were the same, exhaust manifolds excluded, there is no evidence that any 396/425 rated Chevelles left the factory in any year.

Gotta love the new muscle for daily driving! Heck, you can even sit in them for a long time. Now that I'm old and soft, I can get a cushy seat AND 400 hp/400ft. lb. of torque.[Linked Image][Linked Image]

AALf,

I am not the expert on muscle cars.. as the most I ever got to do was drule over them..

however since that was one of my TWO favorites...I always knew the deep specs on those..

back in those days, when the insurance companies started charging a premium on Muscle Cars, which they defined as a vehicle having a motor HP ratio vs weight...

so a 4000 lb car, if it had an engine with over 400 HP it was defined as a muscle car, and the owner got a big premium add on top of his insurance coverage...

so the highest horsepower 396, was rated by the factory as 375 horsepower, after the insurance companies did this... as Detroit knew that could potentially hurt sales..

in actuality, it was still a 425hp engine, they just 'rated' it at 375 HP, to get under the insurance industry's attempt to undermine their car sales..

in 69 and 70, the 396 was available rated at 325, 350 and 375 HP in the Chevelle SS...

in 70, the then new 454 was available and rated at 365 horses and 450 horses..

In high school, I knew this spoiled punk kid, whose dad was an attorney. the kid had a TR 6 for a car as a junior in HS, and then he decided he wanted a 396, so his dad bought him a Blue with white strips and black interior, bucket seats, auto 70 SS 396 with the 425 HP motor... he beat the crap out of it for 6 months, and then decided he wanted a Corvette with a 454 in it..

Dad said no, so he went out and totaled the Chevelle on purpose.. so dad bought him the Covette he wanted..

Me and him never got along.. but after that happened, I pissed him off on purpose, so that he took a swing at me, in front of witnesses...so I proceeded to beat the crap out of him....

my motivation wasn't from him taking a swing at me, because I had set it up to piss him off enough to do so.. I bet the crap out of him, being pissed that he had gone out and totaled the car I drooled over daily in the parking lot...

kinda of like for a high school kid, beating the crap out of the guy who dumped the girl, and broke her heart.. when you dreamed of her every day...

but hey, that was high school mentality..
only trouble it got me was an hour in detention... and I was instantly the hero for the day, or everyone in school that disliked that A Hole punk..

of course, that punk went to Harvard and became a lawyer...

I just hope our forum buddy Issac isn't that kid grown up.. whistle
since that occurred in Fairfax Co Virginia..

My muscle car, years ago; a '67 GTX, 440 and Torqueflite;

Mine was white with black roof.
My brother's was a '68 Torino GT 390 just like this:
http://www.musclecarcalendar.com/FeatureCarsHome/68TorinoGT/JA10.jpg
And baby brother had a '69 Road Runner with the 383 (balanced and blue-printed)and torqueflite. That thing would chirp the tires on the one-two upshift.

As to favorite, there are to many stellar cars to list. In order of preference: Mopar, Ford, GM. In reality, they all rock!

My senior year in HS bought a 66 Chevelle SS 396..layed down alot of tires before I got rid of it...lookin for a pic!!

Was it the 421 with the nascar Aluminum heads, or iron heads?

I forgot, my second car was a 64 Lemans 326 HO That I had to get more torque, so I pulled a 389 from a junkyard car and added a turbo 400 (1964 had the 2 speed auto's) and it would do a burnout through the upshift to third.

First was a 56 Chevy 1500 that we pulled the straight 6 for a 283...

67 Chevy 2 Nova 327
Lot's of cool rides shown and mentioned here.

I had the good fortune to have a Dad that owned and operated an engine rebuilding shop back in Erie, Pa, W.E. Smith & Sons on w. 12th St. My Grandfather started the business much earlier in his garage and later had the very large building built on W. 12th ST. Gramps designed and built machinery among which were a very large crankshaft grinder and boring bar for really big marine and industrial engines. Most of the "small" engine (upto about 5" bore) tooling was Kwik Way, Sioux and Lempco.

I started working there when I was 11, not 'cuz I had to but because it was interesting and I also got paid a good bit for a kid as it freed my Dad up to concentrate the machining and reassembly. We worked on ANY internal combustion engine but specialized in the older cars. We only worked on engines and didn't do any R&Ring of engines from the cars with the exception of our own vehicles and our racing dirtbikes (but that is a whole 'nother story). I suffered from "PD" (permanantly dirty) fingers and hands. Go Joe was helpful but carving out the grease and sludge out from under my fingernails was a losing battle.

Many, many hundreds if not a thousand model A's, T's, flathead V & Straight 8's and sixes of all sorts. From Ford to Franklin, Dodge to Delahaye, Chevrolet to Cord, on and on. We did Chevy small block heads by the ton and model A Ford engines by the literal semi truck load (a group deal with a Model A club somewhere that escapes me now)... We had a massive stock of pistons, valves, timing gears, gasket sets, clutch & pressure plate assy's and much more for a lot of really obscure marques.

Started as a engine dismantler grunt playing in the grease tray getting the engines and components ready for the hot tank. As time went on I was taught how to grind valves & tappets, cylinder boring, pouring babbit mains and rods and align boring, crankshaft grinding along with final fitting and reassembly.... At the time we one of not too many places that cast babbit bearings. It was amazing to recall literally sledge hammering the pistons and rods out of a engine that had sat for years with the cylinder head off and 3 days later it was ready to install and run again. No replacement pistons or valves to be found? No problem, Jahn's would scratch make you a set of slugs, Perfect Circle would supply a set of rings and another company that escapes me would whip up the valves to spec. Cracked cylinder wall? We can prolly sleeve it. Knackered valve guides? A cinch to either slide or hog old ones out and stuff new ones and ream them.

Dad passed on in 1975, and the shop eventually closed as I didn't have the total skill set and business acumen to operate the shop and both of my older brothers worked in other fields of endeavor. I sure miss those days and dear old Dad. I was very luck indeed but miss those days with very real pain. I have recently toyed with the idea of re-acquiring some machinery to do engines again. 'Prolly a genetic predisposition towards working on all things mechanical.

After the shop was closed we were trying to sell my grand fathers special order 1953 Buick Roadmaster (Have to see if I can scan a pix of that and post it). In 1976 it had 12,000 original miles. I had a chance to keep it but had no place to keep it so eventually it was sold. I still regularly scour through Hemmings and other car ad's hoping to find it. I would love to find that car and buy it if possible. Ideas on finding it are welcome and appreciated by the way...

Keep the cars coming, it brings back great memories or many I had forgotten about.

Be safe
Patty

I had a highly modified 1970 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland in it, followed by a 1976 Trans Am with the 455 in it. I raced them in slalom races and at some tracks. In the day, I thought they were mighty fast.

Funny though - some four bangers now have faster 0-60 times, faster 1/4 mile times, and corner and stop much quicker.

A lot of cars today, can stomp on the best of the old muscle cars, by virtually any measure you want to compare - and get twice the gas-mileage doing it.

Cars have come a long way.

Now why would you have to go pollutin' such a nice nostalgia thread with such cold reality! wink

Seriously, at some level we all know what you say, but there is still something special about cars that got their horsepower with big thumping pistons, not computers and other high tech stuff.

Cadillac's were designed to haul mamaw and papaw to the dang grocery store, not a true muscle car.
My wife has a 600 HP Dodge Viper, waaay to much of a good thing. But its not a muscle car either IMO, just another modern day blvd. brawler and curve straitner if thats what You wanna use it for.
Try as they may, any newly manufactured engine will never come remotly close to soundin like a 426 hemi or most any big block from the sixties to early seventies.

Amen!
I ran a B/Gas dragster in the early 70's ( 350 sbc , Hilborn injected, reverse Isky roller cam, HC wild pistons on cast rods,) never dyno'ed it ... they were rare in those days but probably 500-600 hp and weighed 900 lbs... ran 8.50 s and 160-mhp 1/4 mile.
Now, here's a showroom Caddy with the same HP and ac/ stereo heated cooled seats!
I see them run auto cross like a Miata!

Cars back then were cool.
But they could nEVER hold a candle to today's muscle cars.

Sure we had power then.
But at what cost?
Would they run 100, 000 miles on the same set of spark plugs?
Tires then were ok, but sucked compared to todays marvels!

EFI and ignition now are light years ahead of anything we had then.

We can dream about the good old days
but the V-8s in the new Mustang and Camaro , Caddy, Lexus,
BMW are engineering marvels.

I even drool over the Huyndia Genesis coupe!

Sam,

Thanks so much for the additional pics and detail. Makes more sense to me considering how rare and radical the original Thunderbolts were. I had a 63 1/2 Galaxie "G" code which was one of the odd 406/405hp Tri Powers like the ones that came on the "P" (390 Police) code Galaxies and the 63 notch back. You normally got a "R" code 427/425hp in 63 1/2, but there were some 406's left. The only difference between the two were the extra cubic inches and the 2 fours vs. 3 twos.

The very best thing about the 406, 427, and I think some 390's (not sure on that) was the introduction of the aluminum intake. Your picture above illustrates it best. You will notice that the intake constitutes a part of the cylinder head. There is nothing heavier on a Ford FE engine than a cast iron intake manifold!
Posted By: tzone Re: Favorite Muscle Car... - 01/18/11
I have a couple of the cast manifolds...they have to be 80-90 pounds a piece.

The problem with the FE's and the intakes, was all the dang head options. They don't all work with the intakes.

The paint on the car is hard to see in the picture, but it looks a foot deep in person. You would be stunned to see exactly where my dad painted it and his equipment. He is not a painter by trade, but it is the best paint job I have ever laid eyes on.

I said that he scored a 971 out of a possible 1,000 points. At the time that was the highest point scored of any Nova at a recognized event. That was in 1988. It was freshened up by Steve Mauer after he bought it from my dad and shown in New York. The Mecum site will show you the certificate if you are a member. It scored a 968 then.

Here are a couple of pics of the car.

My first car was a 1967 Cougar XR7 with the 289 and automatic with T Shifter on the console. Black leather buckets and all the options including a/c, which didn't work when I got it in '78.

For High School graduation, Dad gave me the keys to his '74 Chevy Cheyenne Super with the 454 auto in it. I wrecked it about two months later. Totaled. Looking back on it, it wasn't really that great as it had already nearly totally rusted out, been fixed and was rusting significantly again even though it was only six years old and Dad bought it new.

The two things I really hated about the Cougar were its handling and the way it leaked dust and choked you out anytime it was dry and you got on gravel. The steering of that Cougar (and most Mustangs I've driven from those days) was sloppy as hell. It was all over the road.

I hear you, but the FE's are my favorite. I think you mentioned a '67 Fairlane. If I was closer, I think you would shoot me when I tell you what I passed on.

Right after dad finished his L79, he said he wanted me to do one. Basically, he would have me help him. But he wanted to do another car that he thought was neat. An original 427 Fairlane.

We found one in Houston for $5,000 without the motor and transmission. But it had all of the other rare parts in particular the factory "pancake" exhaust manifolds that only came on this car. It was the "R" code.

The owner's wife was there and he was no where to be found. He was to meet us there and we finally left after 3 hours of looking the car over from top to bottom. It was the real deal.

We should have camped out until he returned.

Yep! We replaced all of the front end sterring and suspension components in my wife's 67 GT a few years ago. It's a lot tighter than it was but it still feels loose compared to today's cars.

We have a 68 Cougar with 59,000 original miles on it in the drivewsay under a tarp. It is to be restored with me and my son for him to drive for local events etc.

pretty basic car, 289 2 barrel, C 4 auto,, only other option it came thru with was power steering ( if that was an option) and a vinyl roof, long since gone. needs a lot of TLC, but it is solid.

car was bought new in L.A. by some lady, who rarely drove it since it didn't come with AC. She moved to Fla where it sat a lot there..some guy bought it, brought it to MN, painted it and then sold it to us for 2 grand back in 92, when he blew the 427 in his 69 Chevelle and needed money for a new motor.

one thing about MN, there are a lot of really nice cars, folks have stored back there, that come out in the summer and the local area has a lot of nice get together "Show and Shine" events.

Sorry Allen, I don't have a clue... car was gone in 30 days, repo'ed by mom.. just remember it had been taken out of something like a 63 Grand Prix.

the Airman who sold it had been fixing it up to race or drag or something... but got orders to Vietnam and had to get rid of it quick..

A very wealthy friend of the family, in 68 saw some of the model work I did, as I worked at the Smithsonian as a volunteer during High School, making model displays for them.
This guy always wanted a model of the USS Constitution to sit above the fireplace at his family's home in N. Carolina.

He bought a Revell kit of the Ship that was huge in 1960s and spendy.. no market for something like that nowadays. I spent 7 months building it and rigging it for him.

He actually paid some movers some big bucks to move it from Virginia back to his family home in N.Carolina. Bought a glass case to transport it and all.

He was always thankful for me building it. After mom relieved me of the keys to the Tempest, and stuck me with a VW, he came over to the house one day, with the keys to a new 1970 Camero SS with a 396 in it. Yellow with Black Stripes... Tells Mom that no self respecting kid can be caught driving a stupid VW.

The guy had actually gone out and bought me a darn car.. of course he was worth mega bucks, so it was no big deal to him.

Mom kaboshed that one also...Close but no cigar.. seems my life has taken that pattern... grumble grumble grumble... self pity mode on for the next 15 minutes.. grin

That looks alot like my first car except mine has the SS badges, no chin spoiler, and no vinyl top.

The burnouts are particularly familiar........at least when I could afford the gas!

Bought this one in 1978, my senior year of HS.......still have it. It started life as a 327/powerglide......in 81, I bought all the parts out of a wrecked 69 and converted it to 4 speed.

Owned this one twice........when I bought it the second time, I built a rowdy 4V 351 cleveland and put in it........4 speed toploader, 9 inch rear with 4.11 gears.......it was fun!

Built this one too.......1984 ranger.....4 banger. Bought a totaled '84 Mustang GT with the 5.0 HO and 5 speed........rebuilt the motor and stuffed it into the truck.......it was a sleeper!! grin

The Blue/White combo may look like a NEW Kotex pad, but the Red/White combo looks like...... grin

Those are neat cars. I would have a hard time choosing between the two. I really like white stripes on muscle cars. I owned an orignal 1970 LS5 Chevelle bench seat 4 speed that was black with white stripes. I wish I still had it.

..........I`ll use it as an occasional freeway cruiser and for occasional trips. Won`t be a a day to day car.

0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds. Not quite as quick as the ZR Vettes, but the Vettes are more chlostrophobic to me on the inside. And I gotta have a back seat too.

With good weather and the top down, can`t wait to get that thing on the eastbound 40. Have friends in Texas.

rrogers, you're right about the goats. Makes me feel guilty about wrecking the '66 I had with 389 tri power. Later got a '68 with the 400 and 4 speed that I didn't hurt but it didn't survive long after I sold it. Seemed the guy that bought it from me used it to break off a heavy power pole. Wish I had either one of those cars today.
Posted By: bender Re: Favorite Muscle Car... - 01/19/11
The '05 Goat is turning 3500 at 140. Heady stuff. Gets 24 - 27mpg on the highway, around 18 - 20 in daily (not much traffic) driving. You may find you are driving it more than you plan to.
Posted By: hemiallen Re: Favorite Muscle Car... - 01/19/11
I think the 421 with the nascar heads were the Bonnivilles with aluminum front fenders and hood to go with the aluminum high flow heads.

I was a pontiac guy before 1999 when I bought my hemi car...
Something about being different, and hated by the cars that everyone has in mass quantity...

Interesting fact, my 70 Cuda is one of 488 440 cars, and they made about 200 with 4 speeds. The survival rate of these rare cars is surprising considering how many chevy and fords of the same year have been destroyed.

They did make quite a few Barracuda's, but no bigblock cars in that line.

I bought a 1965 GTO in 1971 when I was in High School. I always loved the car and never could get rid of it. I paid $1500.00 for it, I could have bought a red 1963 Corvette for $1300.00 at the time, I'm glad I didn't.

I remember driving by the Dodge Dealership in Bozeman, (Rolfe & Wood) and they had a lime green Superbird in the showroom. We would drive by and laugh at the ugly piece of crap, now I wish I had bought it too. I could sell it for many$$$ and still have the GTO and a pot full of money...

Fellow Campfire Muscle Car Enthusiasts:
After my post last night I was thinking that we had some photos of the '71 T37 I mentioned somewhere. With apologies for a bit of a sketchy scan, here is the bored and balanced 283 that powered it.

[Linked Image]

Now this photo might even qualify for lhonda's thread on whether or not we had the intestinal fortitude to post a picture from our youth. blush

Anyway, it's one of the few that prove I did actually possess hair on the top of my head at one point in my life. laugh

[Linked Image]

Not too long after this photo was taken, I traded the car and some cash to a fellow who couldn't make the payments on his '80 Toyota 4x4. While I missed the car a bit, that Toyota would take me and my soon to be wife all over the back country of 3 provinces.

Anyway, thanks to all who've posted and especially those who've posted photos of their cars. There are/were some very, very fine examples that showed up and I enjoyed them all - excepting perhaps the Pacer. wink

Dwayne

My scanner's broke, but in the early 1980's a had a '74 Camaro Z-28.
Took a small block 4 bolt main chevy, put some forged steel rods, a good crank, 205 fuelie heads, o-ringed the block and topped it with a polished aluminum 671 blower spinning 10% over crank speed with two big Holleys on top.
I was about to mount a narrowed 9" Ford rear w/discs when I took it to the track.
Mistake.
Splattered the lower end all over the track.
I soon realized I had nowhere near the cash to play that game. I parted her out and became content to watch the big boys race.

I still think the nostalgia nitro burning funny cars are a hoot.

They look so damn cool as well.

Naw, just Adidas sports shorts, the "official" summer uniform of south Okanagan framing carpenters back in the day. When it's 104 out, that's what everyone our age wore on the job back in '80 -'81.

True story here. We were framing on the roof of some condos dressed like that but with a leather framing pouch on as well. A couple of older ladies were walking by the job site and stopped on the sidewalk watching us.

They talked back and forth a bit and then one of them called up and asked either me or my buddy to turn around. I guess they thought we were wearing less than we actually were.

That was back in the days before hard hats, fall protection harnesses and all the gear the framers wear now.

Anyway, you can now see why I was reluctant to post the photo- in case someone got the wrong impression and all. wink

The funny thing is that nowadays after being fried in the Okanagan sun for so many years I try my best to stay out of the summer sun as much as I can. Another sign of aging I guess?

Dwayne

Good for you!

I have a nephew working in northern Alberta who is a journeyman heavy duty mechanic. It's downright handy to have someone to call and pick their brain when either our Jetta TDI or Cummins needs more TLC than my scope of experience covers.

Again though, good for you for pursuing a trade. I can't say what its like in your part of the world, but up here good diesel mechanics are tough to come by.

Good luck in the rest of your schooling and then in finding a good shop to work in.

yeah its a pretty good trade for now and the future around here, the biggest problem on my hands right now is trying to decide what major to pick, i have two choices, i could do light duty option,medium/heavy, or heavy equipment diesel technology which includes power units and generators, not really interested in heavy equipment option its between light duty or medium/heavy, i have about 2 months left to decide so i better get serious about making a choice.

I love the 69 mustang fastback. The black one was mine then had a brainfart and sold it, one of my regrets! It has a Keith Craft 500 hp 408 stroker, tremec 5sp, rod and custom front end and a lot of other stuff. The blue one is one we built for a customer and has a Fast fuel injection with stacks on a Keith Craft 427 bb, tremec, Martz front and rear suspension and a whole lot more stuff than the black one. It put down 680hp at the rear tire. The last pic I thought was just very cool. The Gulf oil Gt is modified with a bigger blower, pulley tune and exhaust and made over 800hp at the rear tire.

Wow, this is a hard question to answer for me. I really don't have "A" favorite muscle car. I like a bunch of different cars.

If I had to pick one, probably a '67 Chevelle SS clone. I say clone because it really wouldn't be worth it for my to buy a real SS, unless the price was very right. I'd be just as happy starting with a Malibu. It'd have a BBC 502, Tremec TKO 600 5 speed transmission and a 12 bolt with 3.55 gears. It'd have a slight rake with the tires in the rear being a little taller and wider then in the front, not to much though. It'd be dark candy apple red, black gut and black vinyl top.

I'd be just as happy with a '68-'72 Pontiac GTO/Lemans/Tempest/T-37, Poncho 460 plus cu. in. engine, Tremec TKO 600, 12 bolt 3.55 gears. Dark green, black gut and a black vinyl top.

My favorite Mopar is a '71 GTX. I like '69-'70 Mustang's. Alway's wanted a '70-'73 Camaro.

Guess I'll have to be happy with my current '78 Camaro, although most won't consider it a muscle car, it is now. It's has a mild SBC 385 stroker motor with Vortec Heads a Lunati hyd. flat tap. cam, TH350 with a 11" Coan 2600 stall converter, 8.5" 10 bolt with 3.42 gears and a Yukon Duragrip posi unit. it's going to be dark green (factory color), black gut and a black vinyl top. wink

a co-worker in the garage had one of the dealer "specials"
69? 68? Nova with a factory 427 dropped in. I think it was a automatic. and it had the plain jane snap on hubcaps on 6" wide biased ply tires.

My favorite sleeper was the 64 belvedere
the 426 was hard to hide with fender well headers
Factory Hurst shifter in front of the bench seat!
Sox and Martin suspension launched it flat.

It was a great pink slip stealer

My favorite car was my 1969 Ford XL convertible that I got new. It was ordered with the 429 4 barrel and air. It was powerful, comfortable, safe and looked good. I drove it until it was worn out.

My previous car was a new 1966 Porsche. It was red and was cool for its day but the Ford had room for guns and game.

My snow car for skiing was a 1970 Olds Toronado. It had studded snow tires on the front. It was blue and a handsome car. They came with a 455 V8 if my memory....

1969 Charger R/T 426 Hemi 4 speed car bought from the original owner in 1972 42,000 miles.Sold it after the gas crunch for $1600!!!! Ouch!!! Car had every option, power seat's,window's.No A/c cause they couldn't fit it under the hood with the Elephant motor. Also had 1964 Barracuda 273 4 speed car and 1969 Barracuda 340 Formula S 4 speed. My son & nephew are Ford freak's and have at least 6 Mustang Cobra's and SVT's and the new 500+ HP Shelby GT 500.

Running a pretty much stock 351w, C-6 auto, soon to install a Lockar shifter, carpet, and seats from a 06 Avalanche. If I can scrounge up the $ I'd like to get an Ididt steering coloumn and wheel. Distant future plans are for front disc conversion as well.

I wish I had a better picture of this, I'm pretty embarrassed of the condition it is in, in these pics.

With the 3 two barrel carbs, that was one mean ride. (Meaning the 1965 442)

Don't hold me to the year... but I believe it was a '67, maybe a '68 Camaro with a 327. Wasn't mine.

Sexy car and oh my the young lady it belonged to......

Fastest thing I was ever in was a Goat; don't know the year. It could pull the front tires off the ground. Scary!

I wrecked a hot-rodded '65 Mustang into a 6-foot-thick adobe wall in NM in '82. Fast car. That sucked. Still have the scars...

But the most terrifying/exhilerating thing I ever drove was one of those 6-cyl Kawasaki motorcycles from the 70's.

The OP had it...'68 Charger R/T with the Hemi if I could only have one. Of course, I would 'update' the susp, brakes, tranny, etc and boost the engine cause the original 'Elephant' was naturally 'underpowered'! grin

I came after the muscle car era and, of course, they're way beyond my means now (thanks, ya' damn baby boomers! :D) but one can still drool, er, dream.

Hey Jeff,

I had the great pleasure of having the Kawi Mach III and Mach IV triple 2-strokes as my first road bikes at the tender and newly licensed age of 16. Too much engine for its brakes and chassis (esp. on the backwoods, deer infested roads of NE WI! esp fun at night with that 35 watt headight) but I'm still here today! (My 1000cc V-Twin crotch rocket is soo light years ahead!)

LOL Roger

Which car is that above? Looks like Indy valvecovers. I put the plian ones on the 446 in the Cuda, need to paint them black to make the Hemi orange engine and alum Eddy's stand out more.

I didn't think they had power wseats in 69 on a bucket seat car? Most were either standard or 6 way, or was that only cuda's? Yea, a hemi rt 69 charger is one of the top Mopar's for value.

Cars sold recently at Barrett are an indication the market is pretty soft, I believe, unless it is a one-of car.

1970 Mustang Mach 1 351 Windor 4 Speed

My muscle car ownership in the early 70s was very limited in scope - limited to a 1967 Stingray Coupe with 427BB, 4speed Muncie, cutout side pipes and available horsepower options. It was very hard on Mopars and death on Fords. My muscle is still limited - that ride is out there in the garage.

Olds 442

CB
Thanx, pahick, for the video......the sweetest sound to my ears is a recip a/c engine and those ol big blocks sound like a Sandy/Spad/Able Dog.

I came back to the states in the summer of '70 to NAS China Lake for a week and saw and rode in a '70 Z28. When i got back to Da Nang i promptly went to the GM sales dude to order one. Had to order a '71. It was neutered compared to the '70.

When i was done having fun,my next duty station for my last 10 months was NAS Kingsville,TX. One car on base that impressed me was a '69 SS Camaro,396,white with orange stripes over the top, orange interior with some goofy sharkstooth ? cloth on the buckets but God was that thing fast! Didn't handle worth crap tho.

There were a bunch of Ford Mavericks running around that were real quick. Can't recall what engine was in them but they were cheap and plain-looking....similiar to the Road Runner concept. Can't remember the model designation but i think it had an X or Z or L,hell can't recall....small block sleeper.

But to me the muscle car that looked like a muscle car was the 1970 Pontiac Trans Am. Plain white with the blue stripe over the hood scoop. New body design in '70. Wish i could post a pic for ya to see but i'm on a mobile waiting to go coyote call'n in the morning.....maybe someone would be kind enough?
The car just oozed kick azz squattin there. The one i rode then drove had the 500HP 400. Felt like a high G count pressing against when you launched it.

And the sound...............you could feel it deep down inside you.

Tom264;
I hope this finds you and yours acceptably well this morning Tom.

Your choice brought to mind the brown '68 that a buddy had during the times I wrote of earlier.

As I recall his was what they'd called the "Econo-Racer" package?

If memory serves, it had a 383, 4 speed and fairly low ratio posi or limited slip rear end in it and not much else. There was a bench seat and the gauge package was basic I think?

It had one of the vertical pistol grips on the shifter and the shift throw on the thing was really quite long. You'd almost smash your hands on the dash going into 3rd if you weren't careful. grin

Anyway, it was a cool ride. It wouldn't catch another buddy's '70 or '71 Demon with a 340 and 4:11 rear in it though - that car was quick....

I hope you and your family have a great weekend Tom.

Regards,
Dwayne

That copo had to have chambered exhaust. I knew a guy who had a 70 chevelle ss 396 with chambered exhaust and it sounded like that with their "3/4 race cam" in it. I had 2 muscle cars that I sold in 03, a 67 Chevelle SS 396 convertible with a 4sp muncie black top with black interior and the body was red. The other one was a 68 Buick GS 400 green coupe with a black interior with a turbo 400 transmission, that was a comfortable car to drive.

'69 or'70 Boss 302, 427 Cobra or a '69 Boss 429 would make my list of favorites.

I bought a '68 El Camino in 1970 from a plumber friend who decided he need a full size pickup. It had the L79 327, Muncie 4spd and the 12 bolt 4.10 positrac rearend. In '68 the L79 was rated at 325hp in a regular Chevy and 350hp in the Corvette (same engine). I left it stock except for adding headers, modifying the distributor and putting wider tires on the back. It was a real sleeper. It was plain looking (light blue) and had the small hubcaps. I never got outrun by any big blocks (not counting hemis). I'm sure I would have been outrun by a hemi but never raced one. In 1971 I even outran a 1971 SS Chevelle with a 454 in it (a little less hp than a 1970 454). I drove this El Camino until 1978 when I bought a new pickup. I parked the El Camino in my garage and it's still there. If I live long enough I'm going to do a complete restoration and leave it to my son. So far when I have the time I don't have the money or if I have the money I don't have the time.

Thanks Dwayne you too.

I used to have a 71 dodge dart with a factory 340/auto and a friend had a 68 charger with a factory 383/manual, whenever we raced I would take him right from the getgo and about halfway down the road I could see that big nose coming up in my drivers window.....course he beat me but I fixed that!

I built that 340 to 400 hp and built that tranny to where it "chirped" the tires every time it shifted and dropped a 4:86 rearend in it......that did it! I smoked him every time after that.

Wont even mention my built to the max tubbed 68 RR I had in hs.

Rumor is that there is a chance the next generation of the Vette will be a supercharged 6cyl in order to meet future mpg requirements. Also that it will be much smaller for the same reason.

The C6 Vette and the current Camaro and Mustang big V8s just may be the last of the the breed that started in the middle 60s.

I know this is not a true muscle car to many, but I've had 6 Vettes from 64 thru a 2010. The last is the best without question.

My Mother had a 69 350hp/350CI 4 speed with side pipes until she was 69yo

I has many in the day.. I guess my favorite and the quickist was my High School car. A 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS with an 425HP 4 spd 409. It was red metalic with Crager SS rims. It was an original Beach Boy "She's real fine my 409" would turn mid to high 13's at the strip. Towards the end of my ownership the only thing I could get it run well with was Avgas. Lucky to have a friend with a plane. Finally sold it to a collector when I went back in the Navy. His eyes got big when he saw it had the one original drivers seat belt. Chevy used to call these the Z11 series. Basically a factory drag car. If I remember right I bought the car for $350.00 in 1970. Don't even want to know what it would be worth today.
Posted By: battue Re: Favorite Muscle Car... - 01/23/11
In the 70s my Brother had one of the old retired police cars that had what I think was a 427ci. It was a stripped down rolling beast on four wheels.
Back in 1972, fresh out of high school, I worked in the parts dept of the local Mopar dealership. I had my pick of anything on the lot to drive, but I ended up getting a '69 Vette Convertible with T-Tops, and the ZL-1 motor. I had a four speed and the exhaust pipes were routed where running boards go on a truck. That car got me in more trouble, cost me more money, and got me more easy women than I even want to remember. I went through 3 427's before it was all said and done. I remember paying for those Parnelli Jones? tires too. That was one expensive car to keep on the road, and I ran through an inheritance doing it. And gas was cheap back then too. It's a wonder any of us survived at all. I lost several friends from fast cars in those days.
