That's a fine rifle. It also has the bases for iron sights which we use at our matches.

your new rifle

I ordered mine new in 1957 and got a M70 Varmint model in 243 and used in in the 'big bore' competition here in CT at 200 yds. That model had a heavy 26" barrel and we used 'iron' sights. I chose the 243 to reduce recoil and the rifle shot excellent scores.

If I remember correctly, this rifle came out of CT. I always kinda figured it was a woodchuck rifle, but match rifle makes sense too.

The other marksmen shooting in those 'Big Bore Leagues' used the rifles of the era which included M70 match rifles in 30-06, Springfields and a few customs. I thought the 243 was an advantage as it has a lot less recoil.

After doing well with it I ordered a Rem. 40X match rifle in their 6mm Rem International chamber which is a 250 Savage case necked to 6mm. I shot the 75 gr Sierra HP over 30.8 grs of 3031.
