I prefer period correct for my 99's, all the peep sights seem to work equally well for me. So old Lyman 1A's for 1899's, Lyman 29 1/2 or 1A's for 1920's/early 30's, Redfield 70's for late 30's-50's, Lyman 56/57 for 50's..
Ball park dates above. A Lyman 29 1/2 or 30 1/2 on a 40's 99 is perfectly fine with me and probably perfectly correct.
