A giant button was the military answer for sling slip over 150 years ago There was also a sewn on shoulder pad (not a shoulder tab or épaulette) but an actual round sewn on pad, at the top Of sleeve seam. About 3" long and 3/4" to 1" in diameter on some uniforms even up until The Great War.
