6 - 8x for my 222 Remington's. All set up for woodchuck hunting.
It's plenty of magnification to take head shots out to 300 yards.
It's low enough magnification to maintain the target in the scope to "spot the shot' whether you hit or miss.

It's not just magnification, but resolution.

222 Rem rifles I've owned:

Savage 112JRS single shot
Rem 788
S&W 1500
Rem 700 Varmint
Sake A1 heavy barrel

Scopes used on them:

Leupold 6x36
Burris Signature 6x42 (GREAT scope)
Lyman 8x AO. All-American with 1 MOA dot (Great scope and love the 1 moa dot)
Leupold 8x AO

I used a steel-tubed Weaver T-10x AO. Worked ok on heavier rifles, but was borderline for spotting to shot through the scope.

My brother has a Bausch & Lomb 6x on his Winchester model 70a (late 1970's vintage) sporter. It is a fantastic rifle, shoots 3/4 moa, and a 6x scope is perfect on that rifle.
