Congratulations on joining the .308 club - it is a large club whose only entry fee is a .308.
Since mine is a light rifle (pre 64 M70 Featherweight) I prefer 150 and 165 grain bullets (took an elk cow recently at 200 yards with a 165) and not the 180 grainers.
My son shoots a heavier rifle and likes 180 grain bullets.

I have taken a mess of whitetail from 5 yards out to 400 yards with it and if hit right, there is no need for tracking a wounded deer.

BTW, did you mention the make and details of your rifle?
