I wear a merino base layer of long underwear type.

And I've probably gotten used to it in 50 years of wearing Pendleton/Wololrich/Filson/Bean/Cabelas stuff. Along with some Irish Fishermen's sweaters, surplus "British commando" sweaters, USN wool watchcaps (those I wear a cotton bandana under as they do itch my forehead).
