Such a shortage (5%) will lead to shortages of oil in Asia and Europe (which are heavily dependent on this source. This will lead to an increase in the cost of good produced in these regions which will affect world prices. It is not only the loss of 5% of the world's petrol supply today, it also is the threat of a further loss if the attacks continue - what if 15% is lost and for how long?

Such a loss could cause military action that would certainly involve the US; do we really want another war after 17 years in Afghanistan and Iraq. We've already lost about 4,500 personnel in the last 17 years and drained our economy (i.e., the taxpayer) of about $2.4 TRILLION (according to the Congressional Budget Office".
