I do't think Girty had much of a choice. If he'd shot Crawford to end his suffering, odds are he would have been the next one at the stake.

Conflicting reports of Girty's behavior that day. Some said that he egged the Injuns on and taunted Crawford. Others say that Pipe had already told him he would take Crawford's place if he said anything.
