May get flamed, but I prefer the 338 Federal to the 358 Winchester. You will get moderate velocities from say 2,200 fps to 2,600 fps depending on the density of powder and weight of bullets. With mild loads and mono-metal or bonded bullets you should get leaky holes going in and coming out, yet be able to eat right up to the bullet hole.

My first 338 Federal was in a Sako 75 Stainless Synthetic. It was a disaster as Sako had a bad run of barrels on this particular chambering.

My second is a cherry!



I ordered an 18" Wilson Combat barrel and built an upper to mount on an Armalite AR-10 lower.



I tried several different bullets and powders and this barrel likes the 185 gr. Hornady GMX over 45.2 Gr. TAC, 215M primers and a 2.810" OAL




It will layeth the smack-down on hoglets
