No way to verify on my end, but IIRC Rick told me that what I call the "Monkey Puzzle" damascus was the first forged damascus knife he ever made, as he was a stock removal guy rather than a "heater and beater".

I don't keep as close of a track on what Rick is doing these days as most of his stuff is now on Instagram or Facebook,

but IIRC he told me that this was the first knife he made with a "hamon" and is marked "proto" on the backside. It also has pinned bolsters with copper inlay, and mammoth ivory scales,
