I have an article by Jack O'Connor from Peterson's Hunting from November 1975. JOC lists his pet load for the 30/06 as 48gr of IMR 4064 with most rifles giving 2,700 fps in a 22" bbl. In a mannlicher style rifle with a 19" bbl he got 2630 fps. He goes on to say that it gives little muzzle blast and is more comfortable to shoot than slower powders.
I've actually used that load with Speer bullets on several Wisconsin whitetails.....works very well indeed.
