How about "investigation"? Most blurt that out without a thought as to what it involves. "We demand an investigation"!

To conduct a proper investigation requires a special set of skills that are acquired through training. It isn't taught in law school, in fact there are special courses available for lawyers who want to become investigators.

It takes more than just "common sense", and it damned sure doesn't mean someone sitting on a high dais with a name plate that says "Senator" asking a bunch of grandstanding badgering questions, and calling it an "investigation".

How about a foreign entity investigating an American? Are there personnel thoroughly familiar with the English language and American culture? How do they gain access to the necessary info sources from a remote foreign location, e.g. Ukraine?

Does anybody ever consider these things?
