Years ago, I was trained on the 36" riot baton, and crowd control. Always preferred the kneecap, myself.
Having had a broken kneecap, I can assure you that hostilities will end quickly.

Take a blast from one of those to any limb, and the chances of your returning to the mob are between a one and zero.
