Local shop is swamped with first time buyers, and “reformed” new gun owners - the majority are buying an AR, or at least a mid-grade handgun.
First time buyers are generally the younger folks that are still tightly managing a budget, and want a firearm.
The “reformed” are mostly older, and hadn’t believed they needed one before now...
