He didn't die in the book.
The John Wayne version took the liberty of killing him. The Jeff Bridges version stayed true to the book.
Pretty much.
I never did figure out why the Coen brothers put in that entire saga with the guy hanged high up in the tree though. Then people trading the corpse back and forth, and pulling teeth from it.
That added nothing.
