She acted heroically in this situation, nothing more, nothing less. No mention was made of a husband, so I assume she is a single mom. Neither you nor I know why she is single; she could be a widow. To say she would be better off at home with her kid is ridiculous. No doubt the kid would be better off if he were being raised in a two parent household, but I'd say the mom is setting a pretty good example for him to follow.
