They are pretty much worthless for anything besides snakes and I guess rats too if I ever had a need for a rat gun. They have been way more potent than handgun round birdshot capsules, for me at least.
I have killed a few grouse with one but it was marginal at best. For self defense I'd think a guy would be better off swinging a rubber dick around instead of a .410 handgun.
