The 7-08 is a great cartridge, no doubt. A modern 7x57 factory loaded to it’s potential. A person can buy one, buy factory ammo, and use it to hunt with forever. No problems, no drama.
But, it’s been factory loaded for just 40 years, 7x57 over 120. The 7mm Mauser has a lot of history, in a lot of rifles. It truly has been there and done that. A well done book on it would be interesting. Lots of stories to tell and information to share in one place.
If you have a 7x57 you don’t NEED a 7-08. If you have a 7-08 you don’t NEED a 7x57. But everyone who is on the campfire knows need has absolutely nothing to do with it.
My choice is 7x57 Mauser, have had mine for over 40 years. If I was a young man starting out today maybe it would be the 7-08.
